Message from the Minister
Welcome to South Australia’s National Science
Week 2018.
The aim of National Science Week is to ignite
our community’s passion for science and
especially to inspire people of all ages to
explore the fascinating world of science and
technology, and to consider future career
pathways in STEM areas.
This year’s schools theme, Game Changers
and Change Makers, acknowledges that the
most influential developments in science and
technology come about as the result of human
ingenuity.
Whether working independently or as part of
a team, any person who dedicates themselves
to the pursuit of discovery has the potential
to make a breakthrough that will change the
world.
Knowledge, skills and qualifications in STEM
disciplines are becoming increasingly important
in a rapidly evolving world. Ensuring that South
Australia’s young people are inspired to explore
future careers in science and technology
is crucial to our state’s economic success.
Equally, providing diverse opportunities to
South Australians to learn more about and be
involved in science will lead to better-informed
decision-making and richer lives.
The Marshall Liberal South Australian
Government recognises that a STEM skilled
population and a re-energised focus on
2innovation is essential for future, sustainable
growth. We are creating an environment that
enables our brightest minds to flourish across
all scientific disciplines, including: space,
defence, health, ICT, energy, agriculture and
mining.
South Australia is home to world-leading
scientific minds, who are devising game-
changing innovations every day. National
Science Week showcases their immense
contributions to our everyday lives.
There are hundreds of activities on offer across
metropolitan and regional locations; so don’t
miss the opportunity to jump in, experience
something new and exciting, and be inspired to
become a change-maker yourself.
Hon David Pisoni MP
Minister for Industry and Skills
3The SA National Science Week Coordinating
Committee extends thanks and appreciation
to the many sponsors and supporters who have
contributed to the 2018 National Science Week
events and celebrations in South Australia.

Where: Napier G04 Lecture Theatre, Napier
Building, University of Adelaide, North Tce, Adelaide
More Info: aip_branchsecretary_sa@aip.org.au
When we press FIRE on the most powerful laser
in the world, we deliver a packet of light that is a
thousand billion billion times more intense than
the sunlight you feel while out on Bondi Beach in
peak summer. That’s super intense! We can use
this extreme power to recreate the conditions at
the centre of the Sun and in the process release
vast amounts of energy in a clean and safe way.
Harnessing this power for electricity generation
is an inspiring story. It combines pure and applied
physics and requires engineering to handle the most
extreme conditions in our solar system. Presented
by the Women in Physics Lecturer for 2018, Dr Ceri
Brenner of the Central Laser Facility, UK.

NASA scientists are headed to Australia! Splitting
into groups, they will undertake a series of events
around the country during National Science Week,
hosted by Mt Stromlo Observatory astrophysicist Dr
Brad Tucker.
They include leading scientists from the NASA
Exoplanet Science Institute, Ames Research
Centre, Jet Propulsion Lab and CalTech. They work
on various space missions, including Kepler and
K2, Cassini and TESS (the Transiting Exoplanet
Survey Satellite). This is an exciting new 2-year
survey mission that will focus on the detection of
exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the
sky.
In September last year, NASA’s Cassini, which
had been in orbit around Saturn, met its fateful
end in a ‘death dive’ into Saturn’s atmosphere.
26Meanwhile, the Kepler Space Telescope, which has
been discovering planets around other stars, will
run out of fuel sometime this year. Come along and
hear the latest information about these significant
missions that have completely changed our
understanding of the Universe.
With the announcement of Australia’s very own
space agency, it couldn’t be more timely!
Due to popular demand, the presentation will be
held on 2 evenings.
27Trees: The Quiet Achievers
When: Sun 12 Aug & Wed 15 Aug, 2–3.30pm

This experimental rain-fed collection of trees from
around the world is a genetic repository for species
which are rare and endangered in the wild. It
provides habitat for wildlife, enhances biodiversity,
and provides a tranquil green space for public
enjoyment and wellbeing. In addition, the trees
of the Arboretum provide valuable environmental
services: removing air pollution, storing and
sequestering carbon, capturing storm water runoff
thereby reducing the load on storm water systems,
and cooling the air.
The Waite Arboretum also offers public guided
walks on the first Sunday of each month or explore
the Arboretum on your own with the free Waite
Arboretum App.

When: Mon 13 Aug, 5pm – 7.30pm
Where: Flinders University, 1st Floor 182 Victoria
Square, Adelaide
More Info: rodrigo.praino@flinders.edu.au
People tend to think about politics as the realm
of ideas and opinions. Politics, however, can be
studied scientifically. Some even attempt to design
“laws” similar to those of the physical sciences. In
this event you will have the opportunity to play a
number of games and engage in activities that will
show you some interesting ways that science can
help you understand politics, voting and political
behaviour in general.
This event is targeted to the general adult public
or young adult public interested in politics and
in understanding how science can play a role in
the realm of politics. There is no prior knowledge
necessary or assumed. Activities will be carried out
individually and in small groups.

better understanding of the universe (Dr Madakbas,
physicist in photonics, whose company builds night
vision sensors for NASA and the Hubble Space
Telescope). The hidden science of light will also be
revealed (Miroslav Kostecki, Technical Manager
at STEMSEL Foundation) in live and interactive
demonstrations such as the audience controlling

open to guests at 5:30pm, with a complimentary
glass of wine available prior to the talk)
Where: South Australian Museum, North Tce,
Adelaide
More Info: www.samuseum.sa.gov.au
What do we really know about the Giant Australian
Cuttlefish? A recent dramatic decline and then
rapid recovery of numbers of cuttlefish aggregating
near Whyalla has sparked off new investigations.
Professor Bronwyn Gillanders will present some
of the scientific detective work that she and her
team have done to unravel some of the species’
enigmatic biology and how it contrasts with global
cephalopod abundance trends.
Professor Gillanders is a Professor at the University
of Adelaide, where she runs the Gillanders Aquatic
Ecology Lab. She uses calcified structures of aquatic
organisms as innovative tools to understand past
environments and biological processes, such as age,
growth and movement patterns.

Adelaide. Includes interactive booths and the Mega
Body. Bring your family along to this free, family-
friendly day that will immediately follow our hugely
