Investiture
This week we have the opportunity to recognise the elected student leaders for 2021. Developing
the qualities of leadership and responsibility is an important element of the curriculum at Coolum
State School. Over the 7 years that students are here at our school, we aim to provide them with a
range of opportunities to grow in self-confidence and take on increasing responsibilities. Little
steps like taking charge of their own home reader and homework all assist students to become
responsible for their own actions. As students become more independent, we provide them with
the skills to take on wider school responsibilities and begin to show leadership skills in small and
large groups. Taking on a monitor role in the classroom or school playgrounds helps students to
gain a sense of satisfaction and a feeling of being part of a larger community. Leadership is about
having a go at something. You don’t have to be the ‘boss’ to be a leader. You need to be prepared
to take on some challenge and see them through. Leadership must be demonstrated. As
American industrialist Henry Ford said, “You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.”
Leadership requires enthusiasm, passion and a positive attitude for what it is you want to complete
or change. Leadership is also about working with and trusting others to achieve a common vision.
Congratulations to our 41 Leaders who will take on the roles of School Captains, House Leaders,
Music Leaders and Student Council Representatives.

SafeST Meeting
This Friday the school will host the first SafeST (safe schools transport) committee meeting. This
group is chaired and co-ordinated by Department of Transport and Main Roads and has members
including representatives from the school including myself, a parent representative, P&C, Local,
State Government, Police and Local Bus Services. The group will consider what is working and
what is not, to develop a plan for the future to assist our students to travel safely to school. This
group considers local walk and bike paths, traffic infrastructure, bus services etc. The school
representatives including the nominated representative and the P&C will seek feedback and report
back to the wider community during the year to ensure we all have our voices heard.
Remember we all have a part to play in ensuring our students are safe when coming to school.
Please ensure we share with our children regular the safe options when coming to school, for
instance using the crossing, not crossing between cars, and staying on the walk and bike paths.
Are we leading by example in following the rules of the road? Children learn by seeing and doing.

Parade
It was great to get see our students on Parade last week. We look forward to seeing parents of
students receiving awards at Parade this week. We do have some space restrictions under these
guidelines. There is no requirement for you to sign in. (Anthony Ryan)
News from 3J
What’s happening in 3J?
We have been talking about Zones of Regulation which focusses on our emotions and how we
deal with them.
When we are in the blue zone we are feeling bored, sick, tired or down in the dumps.
When we are in the green zone we are happy, calm, focussed and ready to learn.
When we are in the yellow zone we are feeling anxious, frustrated, excited or silly.
When we are in the red zone we are mad/angry, terrified, out of control, maybe even yelling or
hitting others.
Everybody is different so here are our green zone ideas.

Parent Reminders regarding Workplace Health and Safety
Playgrounds are not supervised by our staff after school and for safety reasons, we discourage the
use of them after school. If you are picking children up from the drop-off zones, please ensure that
your children use the gates provided and wait until you have stopped in the appropriate space.
Families are also requested to use the crossings provided, especially during pick up and drop off
times. We ask that you model this behaviour to our children as well.

Student Information Update
If you or your child’s details have changed, please contact the school office to make these
changes. This could include change of address, phone numbers, medical condition, emergency
contacts and custody details. Please notify the school office as soon as possible so we have the
most up-to-date information about your child.

Sport
Playing Sport provides many opportunities for students to develop in many ways including social,
physical and cognitive benefits. Research tells us that children who play sport get a lot more than
just fitness. Students who play sport are often:
    • Doing better at school.
    • Learning teamwork and goal-setting skills.
    • With good health; attendance at school.
    • Self-confident
    • Less stressed
There are many local sporting clubs that students are able to sign up for. These “sign-on days” are
often advertised in the school newsletter.
Outside of weekly PE lessons and class sport there are opportunities for students to participate in
school teams, district teams, regional and state teams. The trials for the school teams are
communicated through daily notices, classroom messages and on parade.

A reminder for all students participating in PE lessons, please have your School hat and water
bottle with you. We are having our lessons in the Hall at the moment and for the next month, due
to the hot weather.
