James Barthelman said. “To be totally honest, she’s a 2007 Heidi Esbenshade, Yakutat

“Aileen cares more about the team winning than any award bestowed on her,” Barthelman 2020 Gary Lamar, King Cove
said. “Earlier this year she was ranked nationally in her weight class for wrestling. She has 2019 Gary Lamar, King Cove

after the ball season to follow that true passion.” 2016 Bea Klaich, Nikolaevsk

Barthelman said Lester has the work ethic that leads to her success in all three sports. 2014 Bea Klaich, Nikolaevsk
“She works out religiously,” the head coach said. “We have morning workouts she leads. 2013 Susie Rilling, Shishmaref

She runs all summer long. She’s constantly thinking about how she can get better 2011 Edna Ahmaogak, Alak

In basketball, Lester does not have to be her team’s leading scorer to make an impact. 2009 Jason Copenhaver, Golovin

“On the basketball court it’s all grit and hustle and defense that she’s all about,” 2007 Amanda Gerke, Nunamiut
Barthelman said. “Since her eighth grade year we put her on the other team’s best player. 2006 Tommy Wells, Kiana
                                                                                               2005 Tim Helvey, Bristol Bay
It doesn’t matter if it’s the point guard or if it’s the post player, that’s Aileen’s job.”
                                                                                               ** 1992-2008, 1A and 2A were combined on
Barthelman said Lester does the things that don’t show up on the scoresheet. same ballot
“She’s an excellent rebounder. She does all of the little things,” Barthelman said. ** Please visit the AABC website for Players
Even though she is still an underclassman, Lester is the captain and leader of the team. and/or Coaches of the year prior to 2005.

“Last year she really took over that role,” Barthelman said.
Lester is also a standout in the classroom.
“She’s taking a full load of online college classes,” Barthelman said. “She’s already met the gradation requirements for our school
district. She’ll have an associate’s degree by the time she graduates high school. She cares as much about academics as anything
she does athletically. That’s always really impressive.”
NOTE: These awards & teams are voted on by Alaska basketball coaches who are members of AABC. ASAA doesn’t vote or manage this in anyway. ASAA publishes
these awards because it recognizes kids who worked hard throughout the season and our partnership with the AABC. ASAA encourages coaches associations.
