2018 ACADEMIC HANDBOOK - PRINT Conference
Dear Delegates…
Welcome to the Pre-Internship (PRINT) Conference
2018 for NSW-ACT!

First of all, we’d like to congratulate you on making
it through the tough slog that is medical school and
finally earning that “Doctor” title! It feels
unbelievable that in less than 2 months, all of you
will be working as doctors, with a whole new
burden of responsibility.

Internship can be terrifying, and that’s
understandable, because you’ll be facing a very
steep learning curve in your first weeks and months.
In a brand new position in the team and hospital,
everything can - and does! - feel different. The Yvonne
PRINT Conference this year specifically focuses on
topics and skills that we - and other NSW-ACT pre-
                                                        Nguyen
interns - believe are the most useful and essential
for internship.

We have a packed program featuring amazing high
profile speakers and experienced clinicians, who are
more than eager to share their tips and experiences
with you over the 2 days in inspiring talks and 6
highly interactive workshops.

A massive thank you to the PRINT NSW-ACT team
who have been working so hard to bring you a
smashing conference, and to the University
Representatives who have helped make sure the
conference caters to you.
                                                        Raymond
We hope you enjoy the conference and we hope Shi
that by the end of the 2 days, you walk away feeling
that much more confident and prepared for
internship!

Congratulations again and welcome to #PRINT2018!

10 Tips to Be a Great Intern
Dr Anosh Sivashanmugarajah

Internship can be a stressful time, and is a steep learning
curve. Despite many years of studying medicine, many
find themselves ill-prepared to internship as there is a
whole new set of skills to learn! Dr Anosh
Sivashanmugarajah will be giving you his best tips to be a
great intern. Anosh is an Associate Lecturer at the
University of Sydney, University of Queensland and James
Cook University. In 2017, Anosh was shortlisted as a State
Finalist for the 2017 NSW JMO of the Year Award. He is

Hospital and completing a 'Master of Medicine (Internal
Medicine)' at the University of Sydney.

Understanding Your Paycheck and Rights
So you're about to start work and earn real money... but
do you understand your rates of pay, working conditions
and leave entitlements? What are the rules and rates for
your rostered/unrostered overtime shifts? What is an
ADO - do you really get a “paid day off” every couple of
weeks? How many days of annual leave are you entitled
to for your next holiday? You keep being reminded to
“make sure you take your lunch break as you are not paid
for your meal breaks” - is this true? Do you know how to
read your payslip? All your questions will be answered at
this unique educational session on your “Award” and your
              entitlements as a junior doctor.

                                                                     10

skills for interns. This workshop is highly practical and
explores some challenges in prescribing faced by interns on
a regular basis. Expect some high yield knowledge as this
workshop is entirely run by pharmacists!
