Dear Friends of The National WWII Museum,

Each year, the Museum looks forward to once again bringing together friends,
Members, and WWII enthusiasts for our International Conference on World War
II. It has become one of our marquee events, attracting the top scholars and
authors in the field for three enriching and enjoyable days discussing the most
                                                          epic event in human history.
This year’s program will feature over 30 speakers presenting their latest
works and research to over 500 educators, students, supporters, and WWII
enthusiasts—many of whom have become conference regulars. As we say in
New Orleans, I invite you to be “part of that number” and join us in New Orleans
from November 29 to December 1 for the 2018 International Conference on
World War II presented by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library.
As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, our one-
day symposium preceding the conference will explore “The Two World Wars:
1914-1945.” Our sessions will examine the idea that World War II was born out
of World War I by looking at how The Great War began in 1914 and ended in
1918; similarities between 1939 and 1945; the battles, technologies, and tactics
developed during World War I; and the major personalities who fought in the
World War I and then led their nations in World War II. The symposium will
feature two of the best-known WWI scholars with the opening address by
David Reynolds and closing session by Margaret MacMillan.
The lineup for the Conference is equally impressive. Sir Antony Beevor,
a frequent speaker at Museum events, will return to give the keynote address
on his upcoming book The Battle of Arnhem. His new insights and findings on
Operation Market Garden are sure to be enlightening and thought-provoking.
The rest of our lineup reflects some of the biggest names and newest works in
WWII history including Rick Atkinson, James Holland, Keith Lowe, Donald Miller,

Following in the footsteps of last year’s Conference, which received high praise,
the 2018 International Conference on World War II will once again take a broad-
ranging view of the war that changed the world rather than focusing specifically
on one topic or theme. This allows the Conference to host speakers who will
share their knowledge and expertise on a wide-ranging list of personalities,
                                                         battles, and major controversies.

The program is mixed with speakers who are new to our Conference with those
who have become quite familiar from repeated appearances, such as Rick
Atkinson, Conrad Crane, Richard Frank, Allan Millett, Donald Miller, Alexandra
Richie, and Gerhard Weinberg—to name a few. The Conference itself officially

beyond, was a bold concept, but could it have ever
worked? The cost of failure was horrendous, above all for
the Dutch who risked everything to help. German reprisals
were pitiless and cruel, and lasted until the end of the war.
