Religious Strand Options
Students can choose from either Catholic or Lutheran units
Seeking accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic Schools
Preservice teachers seeking employment in Catholic primary schools are expected to be able to teach Religious
Education. Students who wish to teach in Catholic schools are advised to ascertain the accreditation requirements of
Catholic Education Offices in their respective diocese in order to make an appropriate choice.
To meet the varying State and Diocesan requirements, the following set of units of study in Theology and Religious
Education is required:
• EDRE101 Religious Education 1: Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment 10cp
• EDRE102 Religious Education 2: Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment 10cp
• THBS100 Introduction to the Bible 10cp
• THCT100 What Christians Believe 10cp
• THCT202 Christian Symbol, Ritual and Sacrament 10cp (prereq THCT100 and THBS100)
In ACT, QLD, NSW and VIC, UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the Anatomy of Modern Society, becomes a sixth
unit in the Catholic Studies for Accreditation sequence to qualify graduates to teach in a Catholic Primary school.
Students may choose to extend this to a specialist area of 8 units by taking an additional 2 units of Theology as defined
in the course rules.
Seeking accreditation to teach in Lutheran Schools (Queensland and Victoria)
Preservice teachers seeking to gain accreditation to teach in Lutheran schools should enrol in the Lutheran strand
offered by Australian Lutheran College through ACU. The four strand units listed below are offered online and as
workshop intensive modes. Students are granted automatic credit for these units within their ACU degree. Please
contact Australian Lutheran College for details (set@alc.edu.au)
• BS1003L Exploring the Bible
• CT1002L The Christian Faith
• DE3012L The Practice of Lutheran Education
• DE2007L Principles and Context of Lutheran Schooling

2. COURSE & UNIT INFORMATION
If you have already studied at university level or have significant relevant work experience, you can apply for credit
towards your ACU course. Credited units replace units you would otherwise study, so you can finish your course earlier.
You can apply for credit towards your ACU course by completing an Application for Credit / Recognition of Prior
Learning form. The form should be submitted no later than the third week of February for Semester 1 intake and the
third week of July for semester 2 intake. This is to allow for changes to be made to your enrolments before the census
date. The census date is the last day you can make changes to your student enrolment before you become committed
to your fees.
Professional experience units require continuous full-time engagement regardless of the enrolled study mode.
Students complete all placements as described, either as individual days or in a sustained block. The culminating
experience will include at least 25 days of continuous time in education settings.
Course Structure
The ACU Handbook1 provides detailed information about each ACU course, including minimum duration, requirements
for completion, exit points, any available majors/minors/specialisations, Core Curriculum units and descriptions of units.
Please follow the links below to view the rules for your course:

2018 Unit Selection
Please note that study modes and unit availability are subject to change and not all units are on offer at all times.
Students must refer to their course map first, and then check the relevant offering list/s below for 2018 unit availability
prior to enrolling. Students can enrol in any offered mode of a unit (Attendance or Online), regardless of how or where
they are enrolled in their course.
Note: Minimum enrolment numbers apply to all units. The Faculty of Education and Arts reserves the right to cancel
units with low enrolment numbers. Students’ progression will not be compromised and they will be advised of
cancellations prior to the start of semester and offered an alternative unit.

Bachelor of Education (Primary)
PLEASE NOTE:
Graduate level units (500-code) — for example Religious Education units — if taken concurrently with the
undergraduate program, must be approved by the National Course Coordinator. As these units are not part
of the course requirements, they must be studied on a Non-Award fee-paying basis under a different ACU
student ID. As a Non-Award unit, the fee must be paid upfront and cannot be deferred. Students wishing to
complete the graduate level (500-code) units concurrently with their Bachelor degree studies must apply
online via the Postgraduate Individual Unit application.
If the graduate level units (500-code) are studied after completion of the Bachelor degree, these units will
also be full fee-paying, either as Non-Award units or under the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education
(fee payment may be deferred for the Graduate Certificate). An application should be submitted online for
a Postgraduate Individual Unit or the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education.
Note for NSW students who did not meet the 3 Band 5 Requirements on entry to the course
This course is structured to allow students to meet the 3 Band 5 requirements in the first year of the
course. Students must pass all units in the first year before progressing to the second year.
LANTITE
Successful achievement of approved benchmarks in literacy and numeracy (LANTITE) is a requirement for
teacher accreditation or registration in Australia and is also one of the requirements for course completion
at ACU. This is also a prerequisite for the last professional experience unit. Visit the FEA website for more
information: http://www.acu.edu.au/866560. Notification of LANTITE registration and testing information
is regularly sent to your ACU email.
Working with Children and Police Checks
Those students participating in the Professional Experience Program (PEP) must obtain background checks
as required by Federal and State/Territory laws. Please refer to your Faculty’s Professional and Community
Experience webpage for requirements in your local State or Territory. The Professional Experience Office
will provide further information about the PEP prior to students commencing the program. Supervised
professional experience is at the heart of all our Initial Teacher Education courses and the Faculty will find
appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Placements will usually be arranged for the
scheduled placement period in the professional experience calendar, although this may not always be
possible.
