SUMMER 2020 - Cumberland North Yarmouth COMMUNITY RECREATION - Cumberland ME
DAY CAMP INFORMATION
Dear Parents,

As of Wednesday, May 20th we have developed the camp format based on the best information we
currently have from the governor’s office. With this in mind, camp will have a significantly different
look for 2020. We are currently working on developing appropriate protocols for each camp which
utilizes operating guidelines from the state. This will include designing and implementing a best
practices approach including parent sign in/out procedures as well as distancing measures and other
proper strategies. Camp will be small group ratios with no more than 20 assigned to a specific
double sized classroom space.

In the big picture, we are going back to the basics. Each group will rotate through multiple activity
sessions including games, crafts, nature, special events, non-contact sports/field games and much
more.

We will be taking each session on a week to week basis and will be communicating via an electronic
newsletter to outline the specific week’s schedule of activities. We are hopeful to be able to take
trips to local locations such as Twin Brook, Broad Cove, Knights Pond, Cousins Island Beach and
possibly additional local attractions.

There is no doubt that the look of day camp for the summer of 2020 will be much different from
years past. From field trips to daily protocols including no longer having large groups together, we
will be operating with a new set of rules, guidelines & expectations. After meeting with our Rec
Leadership team, I have no doubt they are up to the task and excited for the new challenges while
continuing to deliver a high quality experience for children of our community.

Pete Bingham, Director

Ages 6-14 Tuesdays & Thursdays July 7th-August 6th (10 sessions) Minimum of 15/Max 30
Coaches: John Lane & Kirstin Sandreuter (GHS Track coaching staff)

Due to Covid we will be unable to offer the “traditional” track program which consists of practices
and Thursday competitions with surrounding communities.

Considering the nature of track which lends itself to social distancing (similar to golf), we will be
offering a new program for 2020. The intention of the program will be to offer training in multiple
events including sprints, middle/long distance and field events such as long jump and throwing.
Whether or not the events of pole vault and high jump will be offered is unlikely though currently up
in the air due to safety concerns with how to disinfect the mats between each athlete's effort. For
those who enjoy competing, there may be opportunity for “virtual competition” (using time trial
results and jumps/throws marks taken at practice) via USATF Maine, and/or optional competition
days among teammates.

Additionally, this will be a fun way for kids to get together with peers, receive top notch instruction
and burn off some pent-up energy in a safe/controlled environment.

U14 Middle School Golf Program (Grades 5-8)
Val Halla’s Middle School Golf Program is changing slightly in 2020, aiming to operate more similarly to a
High School Golf team. The Middle School Golf team will have an instructional practice every Tuesday
followed by a competition/play day on Thursday. During Tuesday’s practice, juniors will receive hands on
instruction from their coaches at Val Halla Golf Course. This may include time spent on the Driving Range,
Chipping Green, or Putting Green working on their game.

Every Thursday the juniors, who are golf course ready, will participate in a match against their teammates.
These matches will be assigned by the coaches based on playing ability and may range from individual
matches to team matches. Our hope is to give Middle School golfers a true golf team experience, one that
many of our juniors will experience once they get to High School. Kids of any playing ability are welcomed in
this program, as the coaches will tailor their instruction to the playing ability of each junior. Beginners are
highly encouraged and welcome to join!
