    The first-ever summer edition of Auckland Art Fair, opened at The                                    f o r exhibitio n at the Fair and als o at Tiffany & Co. in B ritomart
    C l oud on We d n e s d a y 2 4 F e b r u a r y 2 021 a nd w a s scheduled to run                    a nd Yu M ei in N ewmark et
    until Sunday 28 February, but closed one day early due to a change
    in COVID alert levels. Collectors, gallerists, artists, art enthusiasts,                           − an inaugural museum partnership with the Govett-Brewster Art
    media and other partners came to celebrate and showcase the                                          Gallery / Len Lye Centre enabling the presentation of Len Lye’s

    Auckland Art Fair attracted 33 galleries to       TOTAL GALLERY SALES AS A RESULT OF AUCKLAND ART FAIR

    Despite closed borders, four galleries from
    Australia, and one each from Beijing and
    Rarotonga engaged local staf f to manage
    their stands and were able to join 32 of the
    best galleries from across Aotearoa at the

                                                                          o n the M ezza nine o f The Clo ud. While the Art Fair has s upported emerging artis ts
                                                                          through Piki Mai: Up Here ^^ since 2018 and the Projects programme since 2016, In
                                                                          Residence provided curatorial support for each artist-run space and helped ensure
                                                                          tha t the f ull co st o f pa rticipa tion was covered for eac h booth through s uc c es s fully
                                                                          spea rhea ding a Bo o sted cro w d funding campaign.

                                                                          S p a c e , S a t c h i & S a t c h i & S a t c h i a n d We t G re e n . E a c h u n i q u e i n t h e w a y s t h e y
                                                                          o p e r a t e , t h e y f o r m a v i b r a n t a n d i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f A o t e a ro a ’s a r t e c o l o g y a n d
                                                                          help pro vide a n essentia l o ppo rtunity for experimentation with ex hibition- making
                                                                          a nd a rt pra ctice, bringing energy and a new pers pec tive to their pres entations .

                                                                          In Residence was facilitated by Becky Hemus, a writer and curator based in
                                                                          Tā ma ki M a ka ura u w ho is a lso a c o- founder of Wet G reen and May Fair Art Fair. In
                                                                          Residence included artist talks and a commissioned text was distributed alongside
                                                                          each presentation. These are now available on the Art Fair website. It was also the
                                                                          f irst time tha t these a rtist-run s paces had collaborated.

SPACE

For the first time, the Fair included an
o u t d o o r S c u l p t u re S p a c e o v e r l o o k i n g t h e
Waitematā Harbour. This area was enjoyed
b y v i s i t o r s , w h o w e re a b l e t o s p e n d t i m e
outside at the Fair drinking and eating
a m o n g t h e s c u l p t u re s . W h i l e t h e re w e re
no immediate sales of the sculptural works,
it is anticipated that the exhibition will lead
t o sa l es o v e r t i m e .

    patron groups from Sydney and a number of independent travellers
    f ro m A u s t r a l i a h a d b o o k e d h o t e l ro o m s i n A u c k l a n d , i n t h e e v e n t
    that the borders were opened prior to the Fair. It is very much hoped
    t hat t hey w i l l c h o o s e t o a t t e n d i n 2 022, despite the expecta tio n o f
    m ore op p o r t u n i t y f o r w i d e r i n t e r n a tio na l tra vel in 2022.

     Auckland Art Fair 2021 saw the inauguration of a museum
     p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h t h e G o v e t t - B re w s t e r A r t G a l l e r y / L e n Ly e
     C e n t re , N e w Z e a l a n d ’s f o re m o s t c o n t e m p o r a r y a r t m u s e u m
     a nd g l ob a l h o m e o f t h e w o r k a n d l ega cy o f pio neering Kiw i
     artist Len Lye. Through this partnership and with support from
     Tec hni x a n d o t h e r p a r t n e r s f ro m Ta ra na ki Gro up, the A rt Fa ir
     wa s p l ea s e d t o p re s e n t L e n Ly e ’s B ig Bla de a t the entra nce,
     free f or a l l t o e x p e r i e n c e a n d e n j o y.

     Big Blade is one of Lye’s for mative kinetic sculptures, inspired
     by the artist’s ability to shake materials like steel and find the
     natural modes of vibration. Conceived in 1959 and constructed
     in 1997, we were proud to show this work at the 2021 Art Fair
     - the first time in more than 10 years that a major kinetic work
     b y L en Ly e h a s b e e n s e e n i n A u c k l and.

                                                                                            Rendered as a space of critical dialogue and collaboration, the
                                                                                            b o o t h re f l e c t e d t h e i n f l u e n c e s t h a t f u e l c re a t i v i t y a n d c e l e b r a t e d
                                                                                            the moments of chance encounters with others whose ideas may
                                                                                            ultima tely sha pe our own.

     three-day curatorial workshop for early-career

                                                                                                         SQUIGGLA MAKING SPACE

                                                                                                        The 2021 Fair built on the previous successes of drop-in workshops for
                                                                                                        families, by partnering with Squiggla – a programme for all ages which
                                                                                                        focuses on the playful use of dots, lines and squiggles, encouraging
                                                                                                        everyone, however old or young, to connect with creative visual thinking.

                                                                                                        The Squiggla Making Space on the mezzanine floor, invited the old and
                                                                                                        the young, and everyone in between, to play, be curious and to exercise
                                                                                                        their creative thinking skills through the power of joyful mark-making.

                                                                                                         Squiggla is a creative thinking programme that exercises the creative
                                                                                                         mind through mark-making. Designed as a non-judgemental activity
                                                                                                         for people of all ages, Squiggla uses the power of direct, free-
                                                                                                         f lo w ing ma rk-making. It is a tool that rec ognis es creative think ing
                                                                                                         is important for everyone. Squiggla has been developed by the
                                                                                                         C h a r t w e l l Tr u s t a n d s u p p o r t e d b y Te R i t o To i a n d t h e C e n t re f o r
                                                                                                         A rts a nd So cia l Trans for mation.

     The Auckland Art Fair bookshop was again organised and managed by
     independent curator and writer, Victoria McAdam, offering visitors the
     opportunity to browse and purchase a selection of outstanding art books.

     Alongside new publishing from New Zealand’s leading galleries, university
     presses, design studios, artists, and independent publishers, the 2021
     bookshop featured a selection of photo-books from the personal library of
     John B. Turner, a key figure in the history of photography in New Zealand.

     The 2021 bookshop stocked titles from Govett-Brewster Art Gallery /
     Len Lye Centre, Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi, Artspace Aotearoa,
     Te Tuhi, Te U ru, ST PAUL St Publis hing, Remote Photobook s , Index ,

"After the necessary cancellation of the Auckland Art Fair 2020,
 i t w a s a d e l i g h t t o t a k e p a r t i n t h i s y e a r ’s A r t F a i r a n d f i n d
 o urselves, once again, back in the c ompany of artis ts , galler-
 ists a nd collec tors from ac ros s the country. We were grateful
 f o r the de cis ion to provide My AR T with a c entrally located,
 o p e n - f a c i n g b o o t h t h i s y e a r. T h i s p o s i t i o n e n s u re d t h a t w e
 sa w a n increas e of foot- traffic and the opportunity to reac h
 new clients and art s upporters .

 We were particularly thrilled to be able to commission an
 a r t i s t t o w o r k w i t h u s o n o u r b o o t h t h i s y e a r. A rc h i t e c t a n d
 artist Michael McCabe designed a booth concept for My
 A R T tha t prov ed popular with the Art Fair audienc e, and our
 sta ff f ielded a range of ques tions about the des ign objec ts ,
 f ur niture and art works that we dis play ed. For us , this was a
 successful for mula, being able to support an artist to develop
 a c re a t i v e i d e a t h a t h e l p e d c o m m u n i c a t e t h e p l e a s u re a n d
