In August, the Clay Electric Foundation approved 12 applications in the amount of $78,950, enabling the round up program to hit the new milestone. “The program’s success is because of our generous members who participate by rounding up their electric bill each month,” said Chief Public Relations Officer Derick Thomas. “More than 80 percent of our members are currently signed up, which is incredible.” Members who participate in Round BASCA, Inc. was one of the first organizations to receive Operation Round Up funds. But the cost of electricity only increased 1 percent.” Davis said the co-op is in a strong position financially and will continue to be because of the amount of time employees invest in thinking about what comes next. “We continually strive to maintain costs, improve the efficiency of our operation and equipment, and provide competitive rates to our members,” he said. “This focus began long before the pandemic and remains a guiding light for the co-op’s strategic planning.” Employees are working hard to keep materials in stock. Clay sends crew to help hurricane-ravaged Louisiana co-op restore power Fifteen Clay Electric employees hit the road Sept. 3 to help Dixie Electric Membership Corporation restore power to its members after Hurricane Ida battered the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29. The storm made landfall on the 16th anniversary of when Hurricane Katrina struck the region. The co-op is headquartered in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana, and 100,000 of its 113,500 meters lost power at the height of the storm. In August, Clay Electric employees helped West Florida Electric Co-op restore power to its members after Tropical Storm Fred hit the Panhandle. When storms strike and cause widespread power outages, cooperatives know help from near and far will swoop in. Students win Youth Tour scholarships, meet legislators Congratulations to four local high school juniors for receiving a $1,500 scholarship that will go toward their college expenses next year. The students would have visited Washington, D.C., in June as winners of Clay Electric’s 2021 Youth Tour to Washington. Due to continuing health concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association canceled the trip for the second year in a row. To recognize the students’ achievements, Clay Electric’s Board of Trustees voted to award them a scholarship. The students also met virtually with elected officials in June and will be invited soon to tour the co-op’s Lauren Cox Micah Lynn headquarters and Seminole Electric Cooperative’s generating station in Palatka. The scholarship winners are: Lauren Cox of Baker County High School; Micah Lynn of Fleming Island High School; Caleb Moncrief of Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High School; and Ansley Piazza of Santa Fe High School. The students were selected to go to D.C. based on their score from a virtual speech contest in February. The contest would have taken place as students from across Clay Electric’s service territory and the state visited Tallahassee to tour state government build- ings and learn about government. That trip was also canceled due to COVID-19. Caleb Moncrief Ansley Piazza 6 Kilowatt ǀ September 2021 Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc.
