Gratis access to Archaeopress Digital, our subscription-
based platform, during the COVID-19 pandemic
In these unprecedented times, with more and more libraries and institutions
having to close due to the global health crisis, we have been thinking very hard
about how to support ongoing research with access to our publications.
Archaeopress will be offering an extended free trial to its in-house eBook
platform until the end of July 2020, allowing researchers full and free access
to our full digital collection during that time. Journals will also be free to
access during this time, available to access via the same platform.
The platform, integrated into our company website www.archaeopress.com,
can grant access to institutional users via a combination of a unique URL and IP
authentication (including remote access via EZProxy), or Username/Password
as a temporary alternative to IP authentication where necessary.

Access Options
Typically access to the platform is controlled via a unique URL and IP
authentication. This can work remotely via EZProxy, but, if IP authentication
causes difficulties for remote access, it is also possible to change the access
method to work via a unique URL and username/password.
Both systems cannot work concurrently, so access would follow one of the
scenarios outlined below:
Scenario 1 (remote access via IP authentication using EZProxy)
• User logs into the remote access system.
• User navigates to unique URL i.e. Archaeopress.com/UniqueID/ISBN
• Archaeopress website recognises IP address and takes user to the subscription
    landing page.
• User clicks link on the landing page to complete login process.
• User is forwarded to the eBook resource.

Scenario 2 (remote access via username/password):
• User navigates to unique URL i.e. Archaeopress.com/UniqueID/ISBN
• User will be asked to enter the institution’s username and password.
• This completes the login process and forwards the user on to the eBook resource.

Extended free trial period
The extended free trial would be offered to run until the end of July 2020,
subject to the terms of our standard trial licence (see Appendix A).

eBooks included
The platform includes all eBooks published in the following Archaeopress
imprints: Archaeopress Archaeology; Access Archaeology; 3rdGuides. 450
subscription-based eBooks are included, with a further 180 Open Access/Free
to Access eBooks accessible via the same platform. Approx. 6-12 new titles are
published each calendar month, instantly available on the platform. A list of
current available titles is included, see Appendix C.

Journals
Journals are typically purchased via separate subscriptions, but will also be
available via the platform during the course of the extended trial period.
Journals include: Journal of Greek Archaeology (ISSN 2059-4674; eISSN 2059-
4682); Proceedings of the Seminar for Arabian Studies (ISSN 0308-8421);
Journal of Hellenistic Pottery and Material Culture (ISSN 2399-1844; eISSN
2399-1852); Ash-sharq. Bulletin of the Ancient Near East (ISSN 2513-8529;
e-ISSN 2514-1732); Aramazd: Armenian Journal of Near Eastern Studies (ISSN
1829-1376); EX NOVO: Journal of Archaeology (ISSN 2531-8810); KOINON:
The International Journal of Classical Numismatic Studies (ISSN 2631-5874);
Offa’s Dyke Journal (ISSN 2695-625X)

Usage
Standard usage terms apply (see Appendix A). The trial offers full access to
the platform with no restrictions placed on the number of times a title can be
accessed, nor to how many concurrent users can access a title at any time.

Bibliographic data
Bibliographic data can be supplied in excel format including unique subscription
URLs for each title. Alternatively collection data can be sourced from Ebsco and
ProQuest. MARC records are provided for live, ongoing subscriptions, but we
are unable to supply these as part of the free trial.

Price of an ongoing subscription
The current price for 12 months’ access is £1710.00 (exc. VAT, if applicable).
The system is subscription-based, granting full access to our backlist as well
as all titles immediately upon publication (approx. 85 titles per annum require
paid access, a further approx. 35 Open Access/Free Download titles are also
accessible via the same platform).

Legacy access
A library with an ongoing paid-subscription for three or more consecutive
years becomes eligible for legacy access to all titles published during the active
subscription.
Example: a library subscribes for three consecutive 12 month periods from
2020-2022. During the subscription all Archaeopress eBooks including those
published prior to 2020 and those published during 2020-2022 are accessible.
The subscription ends at the end of 2022 and the library loses access to those
titles published prior to 2020 but retains access to those published during
2020-2022. This access continues to be available via the Archaeopress platform,
but libraries are also welcome to archive these eBooks for self-hosting.

Discounts
Some libraries choose to commit to a three-year subscription in advance,
guaranteeing legacy access for the titles published during the next three years.
Libraries choosing to take a three-year subscription, paying in advance, would
save 15% on the list price.

The following user guide covers the main aspects of the platform. A video
guide is available on YouTube, click play to watch the video online or visit

Introduction
Welcome to the Archaeopress Digital, our online platform for eBook and
journal subscriptions.
The platform is built into our main website, www.archaeopress.com. Users can
log into the subscription account to browse and download resources available
in active subscriptions.

                 Standard homepage at www.archaeopress.com
Archaeopress Sign-up for an extended free trial until July 2020 - www.archaeopress.com
Logging in
Our aim is to keep everything as simple as possible so there is no username or
password to remember; all that is required to log into the subscription account
is a unique institutional URL. Access is granted via the use of IP authentication.
The format of the URL will be as follows and must be used to log in:
http://www.archaeopress.com/uniqueID
If accessed via an approved URL the following screen will display:

Digital subscription landing page; IP authentication successful.

From the landing page users need only click the link Continue to browse all
digital downloads available through your account to complete the logging-in
process.
If the IP address cannot be authenticated the following screen will display:

                          IP authentication unsuccessful.
Archaeopress Sign-up for an extended free trial until July 2020 - www.archaeopress.com
Once logged in the website will only display titles available to download as part
of the digital subscription. Graphics such as ‘buy now’, seen on the standard
layout, are replaced with ‘download’ graphics.

Homepage after logging in - note ‘download’ graphics now appear for each title.

Navigation
The subscription resource can be navigated by all the usual methods built into
the website. This includes a ‘quick search’ box (found on the left-hand sidebar)
in which a title, ISBN, author or keyword can be entered. ‘Browse by subject’
and ‘Browse by series’, found on the top row of menu icons, can be used to
explore titles in areas of special interest.

Viewing or downloading eBooks or journals
Click on a title on any search screen and the website will display a page dedicated
to the selected book or journal. The PDF content is accessible by scrolling to the
bottom of the book/journal record and selecting ‘download PDF’.

Typical book record with ‘download PDF’ option below the descripton.
Archaeopress Sign-up for an extended free trial until July 2020 - www.archaeopress.com
Methods will vary depending on operating system and browser, but it is typically
possible to open the PDF eBook in a new browser window, or download a local
file for offline access.
Users are permitted to download PDFs from the subscription platform to
personal devices for their own academic use. Users may not share or otherwise
infringe the copyrights of any e-resource as per the terms of the SERU or
licensing agreement.
For the majority e-resources it should be possible to print sections of the PDF,
although restricted to a lowered resolution in comparison to any available
printed paperback or casebound edition.

Logging out
Users may wish to log out to browse Archaeopress journals or print-only
publications not currently included in the institution’s active subscription. To
do so simply return to the home page using the ‘Home’ button on the top row
of menu icons.
On the homepage, above the first row of titles there is a message telling the
user they are currently logged in to the digital subscription. To log out they
need only click the message: Click here to log out from the Digital Subscriptions
service to view all Archaeopress publications.
Users will be logged out of the subscription and returned to the standard
homepage.

Open access/Free download
Please note titles generally available on our website as free-to-download open
access publications are integrated into the platform and can be accessed in the
same manner as paywalled content.

Remote access
Remote access is currently available for EZProxy users.

Future plans
We hope you find our digital platform a useful resource. We are actively
developing the platform and hoping to build a range of features into coming
updates.
If you have any feedback regarding the resource we are always happy to hear
from the academic community, please email info@archaeopress.com with
your thoughts, experiences and suggestions.

7.7 Except as provided in clause 7.1, under no circumstances shall the Publisher be
liable to the Licencee or any other person, including but not limited to authorized
users, for any special, exemplary, incidental or consequential damages of any
character arising out of the inability to use, or the use of, the licenced materials.
Irrespective of the cause or form of action, the Publisher's aggregate liability for any
claims, losses, or damages arising out of any breach of this licence shall in no
circumstances exceed the fee paid by Licencee to the Publisher under this licence in
respect of the subscription period during which such claim, loss or damage occurred.
The foregoing limitation of liability and exclusion of certain damages shall apply
regardless of the success or effectiveness of other remedies.

8. LICENCEE'S UNDERTAKINGS

8.1 The Licencee shall:

8.1.1 Use reasonable endeavours to ensure that all Authorized Users are aware of

Licence and take steps to protect the Licenced Materials from unauthorized
       use or other breach of this Licence;

8.1.2 Use reasonable endeavours to monitor compliance and immediately upon
becoming aware of any unauthorized use or other breach, inform the
Publisher and take all reasonable and appropriate steps, including
disciplinary action, both to ensure that such activity ceases and to prevent
       any recurrence;
8.1.3 Issue passwords or other access information only to Authorized Users and
use all reasonable endeavours to ensure that Authorized Users do not divulge
       their passwords or other access information to any third party;
8.1.4 Provide the Publisher, within 30 days of the date of this Agreement, with
information sufficient to enable the Publisher to provide access to the
Licenced Material in accordance with its obligation under clause 7.2.1. Should
the Licencee make any significant change to such information, it will notify
the Publisher not less than ten (10) days before the change takes effect.

8.1.5 Keep full and up-to-date records of all Authorized Users and their access
details and IP addresses and provide the Publisher with details of such
additions, deletions or other alterations to such records as are necessary to
enable the Publisher to provide Authorized Users with access to the Licenced
Materials as contemplated by this Licence.

8.2 The Licencee agrees to indemnify, defend and hold the publisher harmless from
and against any loss, damage, costs, liability and expenses (including reasonable
legal and professional fees) arising out of any claim or legal action taken against the
publisher related to or in any way connected with any use of the licenced materials
by the Licencee or authorized users or any failure by the Licencee to perform its
obligations in relation to this licence, provided that nothing in this licence shall make
the Licencee liable for breach of the terms of the licence by any authorized user
provided that the Licencee did not cause, knowingly assist or condone the
continuation of such breach to continue after becoming aware of an actual breach
having occurred.

8.3 The Licencee shall, in consideration for the rights granted under this Licence, pay
the Fee within thirty (30) days of receipt of invoice and receipt of such payment shall
be a condition of this Licence coming into effect. For the avoidance of doubt, the Fee
shall be exclusive of any sales, use, value added or similar taxes and the Licencee
shall be liable for any such taxes in addition to the Fee.

9. UNDERTAKINGS BY BOTH PARTIES

9.1 Each party shall use its best endeavours to safeguard the intellectual property,
confidential information and proprietary rights of the other party.

10. TERM AND TERMINATION

10.1 In addition to automatic termination (unless renewed) under clause 2.2, this
Licence shall be terminated:

10.1.1 if the Licencee defaults in making payment of the Fee as provided in this
Licence and fails to remedy such default within thirty (30) days of
        notification in writing by the Publisher;
10.1.2 if the Publisher commits a material or persistent breach of any term of this
Licence and fails to remedy the breach (if capable of remedy) within thirty
        (30) days of notification in writing by the Licencee;

10.1.3 If the Licencee commits a wilful material and persistent breach of the
Publisher's copyright or other intellectual property rights or of the
provisions of clause 3 in respect of usage rights or of clause 6 in respect of
        prohibited uses;

10.1.4 If either party becomes insolvent or becomes subject to receivership,
        liquidation or similar external administration.

10.2 On termination all rights and obligations of the parties automatically terminate.

10.3 On termination of this Licence by the Publisher for cause, as specified in clauses
10.1.1 and 10.1.3, the Licencee shall immediately cease to distribute or make
available the Licenced Materials to Authorized Users.

10.4 On termination of this Licence by the Licencee for cause, as specified in clause
10.1.2 above, the Publisher shall refund the proportion of the Fee that represents the
paid but un-expired part of the Subscription Period.

11. GENERAL

11.1 This Licence constitutes the entire agreement of the parties and supersedes all
prior communications, understandings and agreements relating to the subject matter
of this Licence, whether oral or written.

11.2 Alterations to this Licence and to the Schedules to this Licence are only valid if
they are recorded in writing and signed by both parties.

11.3 This Licence may not be assigned by either party to any other person or
organisation, nor may either party sub-contract any of its obligations, except as
provided in this Licence in respect of the management and operation of the Server,
without the prior written consent of the other party, which consent shall not
unreasonably be withheld.

11.4 If rights in all or any part of the Licenced Materials are assigned to another
publisher, the Publisher shall use its best endeavours to ensure that the terms and
conditions of this Licence are maintained.

11.5 Any notices to be served on either of the parties by the other shall be sent by
prepaid recorded delivery or registered post to the address of the addressee as set
out in this Licence or to such other address as notified by either party to the other as
its address for service of notices. All such notices shall be deemed to have been
received within 14 days of posting.

11.6 Neither party's delay or failure to perform any provision of this Licence, as
result of circumstances beyond its control (including, without limitation, war, strikes,
floods, governmental restrictions, power, telecommunications or Internet failures, or
damage to or destruction of any network facilities) shall be deemed to be, or to give
rise to, a breach of this Licence.

11.7 The invalidity or un-enforceability of any provision of this Licence shall not
affect the continuation or enforceability of the remainder of this Licence.

11.8 Either party's waiver, or failure to require performance by the other, of any
provision of this Licence will not affect its full right to require such performance at
any subsequent time, or be taken or held to be a waiver of the provision itself.

11.9 This Licence shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English
law; the parties irrevocably agree that any dispute arising out of or in connection
with this Licence will be subject to and within the jurisdiction of the courts of
England.

11.10 The Publisher will not be liable for any costs or charges of any kind in relation
to any work involved in the Licencee’s set up, use, and operation of the Publisher’s
system. It is the Licencee’s responsibility to ensure the suitability of the Publisher’s
system of delivery of the Licenced material to the Licencee.
