Information Disclosed to Commonwealth and State Agencies and Authorities
The personal and academic information of all students will be provided to Commonwealth and State authorities
and agencies. This information is used to monitor the progress and visa regulations of all international Students.

      ESOS Framework
The Australian Government wants overseas students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding place to
study. Australia's laws promote quality education and consumer protection for overseas students. These laws are
known as the ESOS framework and they include the Education Services for Overseas (ESOS) Act 2000 and the
      National Code 2007.

Student Visa Conditions:
Under the ESOS Framework, international students on a student visa are responsible for upholding the conditions
of their student visa. You should check your student visa for the conditions that apply to your visa:
      http://www.immi.gov.au/students/visa-conditions-students.htm

      Family Members
Family members aged 18 years or over may only study for up to three months. If they want to undertake a course
of study that exceeds three months, they must apply for a student visa.
School-age family members, children aged 5–18 years, who join the student in Australia for more than three months
must attend school. The student must meet any associated education or tuition costs for that child.
A student's child aged 18 years or over cannot apply for a student visa as a family member. If they want to study in
Australia, they must apply for a student visa.

      Satisfactory Program (Course) Progress
Your student visa (condition 8202) requires you to maintain satisfactory academic progress in your studies so you
are able to complete your degree (program) within the specified visa duration. ATMC is required to monitor your
progress to ensure that you complete your studies within the duration specified in your original Coe. ATMC will also
monitor your attendance because course progress and attendance are very closely linked.

Identifying students at risk of not meeting program (Course) progress
      requirement

The University has procedures in place to monitor the progress of students. If you have been identified to be at risk
of not meeting course progress requirements, you will be contacted by ATMC to request a meeting to discuss your
progress. At the meeting, it may be decided that an Intervention Strategy to assist your academic progress will be
      put in place.

Students who do not make satisfactory program (Course) progress
If you have been assessed as not achieving satisfactory academic progress, the University will notify you in writing
of its intention to report to DIAC your breach of condition 8202. You will have the opportunity to appeal within 20
working days from the date of notification, the decision to exclude you from your program

Completion within Expected Duration of Study
Due to recent changes introduced by the Australian Government, International Students on a student visa are
required to finish their course (program) within the expected duration specified on their Confirmation of
Enrolment. This means that if your course is 18 months in length you must complete it within 18 months. This will
require you to undertake a 60-credit point load (four units of study) per semester over three teaching periods
(semesters). If you are studying a three-year course, you will need to undertake a 60 credit point load (four units
of study) over six teaching periods (semesters). You should enrol in a Full-time load to ensure you complete your
      studies within the expected.

In limited circumstances, you may be able to enrol in less than the Full-time load. Approval may be granted in the
      following situations:
             • Compassionate or compelling circumstances (e.g. illness (where a medical certificate states that the
student was unable to attend classes) or where the University was unable to offer a pre-requisite unit)
             • Where the University was unable to offer a pre-requisite unit
             • Your school has implemented an intervention strategy because you were identified as at risk of not meeting
satisfactory program (course) progress (e.g. load reduction at your school's recommendation)
             • An approved deferment or suspension has been granted
             • If you do not have approval for any of the above, you may not be eligible to receive a new Confirmation of
Enrolment (Coe) for your student visa extension and you will not be able to complete your program
(course). If you require a new Coe, you must complete the form Student Visa Extension - Application for
Coe. This form can be obtained from the Academic Support Officer. If you complete your program early,
the University must report this to DIAC, and the duration of your student visa may be reduced.

      Deferring, Suspending or Cancelling Enrolment
Students may apply for deferment of their studies under compassionate or compelling circumstances.
Compassionate and compelling circumstances are generally those beyond the control of the student and which
impact on the student's program progress or wellbeing.

      These include:

             • breaches of discipline

       Complaints and Appeals

      Change of Address
Upon arriving in Australia, you are required to advise Australian Technical & Management College of your
residential address and telephone number and of any subsequent changes to your residential address. This is
important because under Section 20 of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2007 Federation
University is obliged to serve a notice at your last known address if you breach a student visa condition relating to
      attendance or academic performance.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you always update your address details within 7 days at Australian Technical
& Management College or MYSC (my student centre) with the Federation University to ensure you receive
important information about your course, fees and possible breaches of your student visa. You can update your
contact details with the Student Contact Officer at reception.

Management College, to ask you a few quality related questions regarding your last semester. We encourage
people to be as honest as possible during all feedback forums so that we can make your training experience first-

Academic and Personal Support
You may also ask questions of the lecturer or tutor in class. In some cases, you will be asked to make an
appointment. The Academic support officer, teaching staff and administrative staff at ATMC are also available to
provide general advice and assistance with matters such as studying and any other issues regarding student
      administration.
A Student Academic Support Officer is also available to assist students with any academic problems including course
progress, attendance requirements and any other issues that may arise. ATMC has a friendly and approachable
administration team on hand to help you with your transition to life and study in a new environment.

      Learning Contexts
The lecture will generally contain the core information to be covered for that week. All students enrolled in the unit
will attend lectures as a group. The tutorial provides an opportunity to discuss the lecture and talk about topics in
detail. Sometimes students are asked to present papers individually or as part of a group in a tutorial.

      Laboratory Sessions (Labs or Practicals)
These are practical classes, where students conduct tests and experiments with the assistance and supervision of
      lecturers or tutors.

      Self-Directed Study
This is a student’s personal program of study, which fits around the “contact hours” of lectures, tutorials and labs.
This personal program includes reading, research, writing up lecture notes, writing essays and reports, discussion
with other students and lecturers, studying for exams, etc. A well-organized and regular study program is essential
      for success at ATMC.
Studying at ATMC may seem difficult at first. It is natural to take some time to settle into your studies. If you are
having difficulties, discuss this with your lecturer or tutor. Your lecturer or tutor is available to assist you if you are
not sure what is required, or if you are having difficulties.

Most lecturers have timetables on their doors indicating when they are available to see students. Alternatively, e-
mail your lecturer and ask for an appointment

      Library Services
If you are a Federation University student studying at ATMC, there are many ways that you can find extra resources
to help you with your studies.

      How?
             • Search the FedUni library collection online: https://federation.edu.au/library
             • Through this search you can find resources available online, or books that you can request get sent to you
                    here at ATMC Melbourne
             • Search the ATMC Library collection online: http://library.atmc.edu.au
             • Through this search you will find what books are held in your library on campus at ATMC Melbourne
             • Search the State Library of Victoria online: http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/
             • This library is not a lending library, however you can go and read books and use the internet at this
beautiful space on the corner of La Trobe and Swanston streets, opposite Melbourne Central Station
             • Search the Melbourne Library Service online:
                    http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/MelbourneLibraryService/Pages/MelbourneLibraryService.aspx
             • These are the public libraries in the CBD that you can join either online or by going into a branch – you
can borrow books and other resources (like DVD’s, CD’s, etc.) as well as use computers and internet in the
branches and they’re often open longer than we are on campus so are good places to study after hours
                    and on weekends!

      ATMC Library
ATMC has a beautiful large space on campus to provide staff and students with a comprehensive collection of
resources available to all enrolled ATMC students and staff.
To borrow a BOOK, you must present your STUDENT ID CARD
ATMC Library will hold some copies of a required textbook for a unit being taught on behalf of FedUni1 or ATMC,

atmc.edu.au

one of these copies will remain at all times in the library as a short-term (4 hour) in library use only loan – this will
allow members to study/copy a relevant chapter/section. For more detail see section below on short-term loans
      & reserve items.

Short-term loans - 1 item for up to 4 hours
This item must either remain in the library or on campus for the duration of the loan – this is to allow for study and
copying/scanning by a member. In order for a members to borrow on short term loan, they must hand over their
ATMC, CDU or FedUni ID AND some other form of significant card (driver’s license, bank card, etc.), this collateral
should ensure that they return the book promptly and if they don’t there are fines as per the section below.

      Why are there these limits?
It is the responsibility of the student to purchase their required textbooks, the library collection of textbooks is
supplied to support students and is therefore shared amongst the entire student body. For more information on
borrowing limits see ATMC Libraries circulation policy.

How can a member make a reservation?
If the book in question is on loan, members can go to the library website (http://library.atmc.edu.au), search for
the item and add a reservation, or go and speak to library staff to make a reservation. When the book is available,
the member will receive an email or phone call notifying them to pick it up. If the item is not picked up within 3
days then the next member requesting the item will be notified and the hold of reservation deleted.

      Penalties:
Penalties will be applied when book is overdue, damaged or lost. They are the same across all ATMC Libraries,
      please see the details below.
      Rationale
Overdue fines were introduced to ensure fair access to ATMC Library materials. Ideally, the ATMC Library would
collect no fines at all because members would cooperate and return items on time out of concern for others.
As soon as a member has an item overdue their borrowing rights are suspended until all outstanding items are
returned and any fines that are over $10 paid as per this procedure
Fines do not have to be paid until a total of $10 is reached
Once $10 is reached, borrowing is blocked and a minimum of $10 must be paid to reduce the fines to $9 or less.

In the library we ask members to:

             • Have respect for library staff, do not yell or argue with them, if you have an issue email
                    library@atmc.edu.au

• No food or drinks other than bottled water (with a lid)
             • Please keep your voices down and maintain quiet in quiet spaces
             • Be respectful and have your phone on silent or vibrate only
             • Pick up and dispose of your own rubbish in the bins provided
             • Look after the furniture and equipment
             • Take responsibility for your own items
             • Present your student ID card to borrow items
             • Be responsible for borrowed items and return them on time and in good condition
             • If items borrowed are not returned by the due date or are returned damaged, financial penalties apply

      FEDUNI Student ID Cards:
Each student is issued a Federation University ID card once they have been enrolled and a Student Number has
been created. The student photo will then be sent to Federation University for processing. ATMC administration
staff will then receive the student ID card from Federation University, which will be handed over to the student.

Your student ID card is very important, you must have it with you at all times when you are in the campus. The ID
card lets you borrow books from the library, attend the examination etc. Your FEDUNI ID number is also your
username to access all FEDUNI library and FEDUNI systems. Once you have your ID number you can log in to FEDUNI
      systems.

Tips to improve your Academic success
             • Make sure you attend all orientation sessions and activities. This will enable you to familiarise yourself with
the campus, meet staff from different areas and learn about support services available.
             • Improve your English skills. Not being able to communicate can create a feeling of loneliness and isolation
             • The teaching and learning style in your new academic environment may be different from your previous
experience. Most International students find it more academically challenging to study in Australia, as there
is a greater demand for student responsibility. So it is important that you prepare yourself for the academic
challenges and improving your study skills by participating in the Academic Skills Program workshops, as
well as making use of other resources available on campus.
             • Know your resources and expand your support system.

      Water Safety
Students are reminded about dangers associated with water environments. ATMC advises students to be well
informed about risks associated with water, including visits to Australian beaches and swimming pools. To help
students learn about how to enjoy water and be safe, ATMC has scheduled events during orientation to help
students understand the risks and how to best manage these risks.

      Attending an Australian Hospital
Few private hospitals have emergency departments, so, in an emergency, most Australians rely on the public
hospital system. If you attend an Emergency Department in a hospital, you will be attended to immediately by a
triage nurse for information about you, your cover, and your current health condition. The triage nurse will
determine the urgency of your condition in comparison to others in need in the emergency room and it is likely
that you will remain at the emergency room for several hours. Whether you are seen immediately by a Doctor, or
have to wait, it is customary to keep you in the emergency room for several hours to monitor your condition before
releasing you to go home, or admitting you to hospital in more severe cases. There are extensive waiting times for
elective surgeries at public hospitals, e.g. for orthopaedic surgery.

Private hospitals are very expensive for treatment and hospitalisation. Your OSHC will cover some of the cost of
some private hospitals but you will have to pay the difference. Your health insurance (OSHC) covers the total cost
of accommodation in a shared ward of a public hospital. It also pays for the ‘scheduled fee’ for the doctor but you
will have to pay the difference if the doctor’s fee is higher than the ‘scheduled fee’.

Adjusting to Life in Australia
While living and studying abroad may be an exciting adventure, it can also present a range of challenges. Having
decided to study and live in Australia you will be undertaking adjustments in many areas of your life including
cultural, social and academic. It is also important to remember that while these changes are occurring you will be
embarking upon a new semester of study (for many of you in a different language) and be away from your usual
      supports, networks and resources.

Adjustment to a new country and culture is a process that occurs gradually and takes time. The values, beliefs,
traditions and customs of your home country may vary greatly from those in Australia and adapting to the
Australian way of life may take some time. This advice may help:
      Listen, observe and ask questions
Adjustment to a new culture and way of life takes time. Allow yourself time to observe those around you and
patterns of both verbal and non-verbal communication. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if there are things you do
not understand as this will reduce the chance of confusion or misunderstandings.

      Become involved
Make an effort to meet people and become involved in groups both on campus and in the wider community.
Maintain an attitude of openness to new situations and experiences. Establishing friendships and joining groups is
the best way to experience and learn about Australian culture and will certainly mean you have a richer and more
      enjoyable time here.

Try to maintain a sense of perspective
When confronted with difficulties remind yourself that living and studying abroad is a challenge and it is normal to
feel stressed, overwhelmed and out of your depth at times.
Try to recall or make a list of the reasons you initially wanted to study abroad in the first place. Listing positive
events or changes within yourself that have occurred since you arrived may also assist with getting things in
      perspective.

Maintain some of the routines and rituals you may have had in your home
      country
This can include small things such as continuing to drink a certain type of coffee or tea or eating specific foods. It
may also include maintaining involvement in bigger events such as celebrating a national day in your country of
origin with a group of friends or finding a cultural group related to your home country for support.

Keep lines of communication open with those at home
Communicating with those at home regularly about your experiences of study and life in
Australia, through emails, telephones and letters is vital. Not only does it help to keep you connected with
important social supports, it also assists your friends and family to understand your experiences, which will smooth
the transition when you return home.

      Sense of humour
Importantly, remember that living in a different culture means you will inevitably find yourself in a range of unusual
and often confusing situations. Being able to laugh in these situations will remind you that it takes time to
understand different cultures and that it is ok to make mistakes.

      Ask for help
Do not be afraid to ask for assistance or support if you need it. In addition to the
Counselling Service there are many organisations set up on campus to ensure you have a successful and enjoyable
      time in Australia.

      Culture Shock
Almost all international students go through an anxious period while adjusting to life in a totally new environment.
During this time, you may go through a wide range of emotions, from fascination and excitement, to loneliness and
      frustration.
Leaving all that is familiar in your own culture and trying to adapt to a new cultural, social and academic
environment is often a challenging experience.
It always takes time to adapt to a new culture, new ideas. However, ATMC’s student services is here to assist new
students to go through this difficult time.

      International Food
When starting to live in a new country you can sometimes feel homesick. One way of helping you is to create food
from your home country, we have asked many people about the best places to get certain foods and the list is
      below.
