New Edmonton Oilers Pediatric Procedure Room Unveiled
The Glenrose Hospital proudly unveiled the new Hunter-themed, Edmonton Oilers Pediatric Procedure Room.
The room was completed in partnership between the Edmonton Oilers
Community Foundation and the Glenrose Foundation. The space is
located on Unit 201 and features graphics of the Oilers mascot, Hunter
as well as state-of-the-art equipment and items for kids comfort. Having
this room means that minor procedures no longer need to be completed
in children’s rooms, allowing them to keep their rooms as a safe place.
To celebrate the opening, members of the Oilers Community Foundation
board and staff, including several Oilers alumni visited the room and
even brought a special guest, Hunter himself. Hunter played with the
kids and tested out the features of the room while admiring his pictures.

STRONG PARTNER WITH PATIENTS & COMMUNITY IN SUPPORTING PATIENT-GUIDED CARE

From Courage Award to Courage Gala Emcee
Christian Zyp was recognized with a Courage Award for facing
challenge and adversity with determination during his time as a
patient at the Glenrose Hospital. He was always looking for ways to
give back to the hospital that helped him so much during his recovery
from a serious illness so when the Glenrose Foundation approached
him about serving as a co-emcee for the 2019 Courage Gala it
was an immediate yes. With a background in theater and radio he
definitely had the personality for the role and, when combined with
his experience as a patient, it was a perfect fit. For the upcoming 2020
Courage Gala, Christian will be returning as co-emcee, along with
Global News’ Su-Ling Goh. Christian and Glenrose Foundation Board Christian Zyp & Rick Vogel

New Occupational Therapy (OT) Group for Managing Stress and Anxiety
Patients on Unit 4C now have the opportunity to attend a new Occupational Therapy (OT) treatment group designed
to introduce strategies for managing stress and anxiety. Unit 4C is a geriatric medical unit. Situational depression
and anxiety are quite common on the unit. In keeping with best practices related to managing depression and
anxiety in older adults in inpatient hospital settings, the 4C unit OT’s recently piloted a psychoeducational Stress
Management Group. The new group is designed to educate patients about stress and anxiety and provide them with
basic strategies to manage stress (i.e. deep breathing, visualization etc.). Given the positive outcomes reported from
patients and staff, along with consistent high attendance during the pilot the 4C Stress Management Group is now a
permanent program offered through Occupational Therapy.
Feedback and comments from the group:

“I never knew until now (after learning “I didn’t know how helpful it would be to

2019/2020 Glenrose Staff Influenza Campaign Update
The Glenrose is pleased to report that as of February 2020 we have reached
a staff influenza rate of 75%, surpassing last year’s rate and only 5% short
of our goal. A recent post on the AHS Work Safe blog (https://insite.
albertahealthservices.ca/Blogs/Safety/Posting669.aspx#.XmaOOXJKiUm)
highlights how a few of our staff members are long-time champions of
immunization and shares their reasons for why they continue to be immunized.
Thank you to everyone for your efforts in making the 2019/2020 Influenza
Campaign a success!

Seating Services Join Forces for Education Day
On Feb 20th, the Glenrose Seating Service and the Edmonton Zone Seating
Services joined forces to participate in an education day – ‘Coaching for
Performance’ in addition to completing zone focused program planning.
This collaboration of 21 zone seating therapists was intended to support
capacity building as we shift to a hub and spoke model to improve access
                                             to specialized seating services.
The day was made even more
                                             valuable with a generous
                                             donation from the ‘Friends
                                             of Glenrose’ who paid for
refreshments and lunch. The added time for team building during the food
breaks helped to build great working relationships and will go a long way
to ensure therapists across programs know who they can reach out to for
support with complex seating cases. Thank you Friends of Glenrose!

Glenrose Fitness Co-op Changes
After many years of offering fitness services to staff at the Glenrose, on January 31st, the Glenrose Fitness Co-op came
to a close. The Fitness Co-op stated 23 years ago with only a small room as the gym and very limited equipment.
Over the years it grew significantly due to the commitment and passion of volunteer staff, offering a 24 hour gym
along with fitness classes.

Due to a combination of factors, the Fitness Co-op could not be sustained. Thanks to the
Fitness Co-op committee or finding a viable solution to keep the Co-op running.

We are excited to announce that Pulse Generator will be assuming the ownership of the
day-to-day operations of the fitness services at the Glenrose! Programming and services at
our site will follow their current model of services found at their other AHS sites. The space is
currently undergoing renovations to comply with recommendations and has an anticipated
opening of March 30th. Scheduled classes will resume in the GlenEast Gymnasium on Monday, Tuesday and alternate
Friday’s starting in April. Please visit Pulse Generator’s website - www.pulsegenerator.ca - for more information and to
register for upcoming classes.

Thank you to everyone who has played a role in growing the Fitness Co-op over the years. We are looking forward to
the next chapter for fitness at the Glenrose.

A LEADER IN RESEARCH & INNOVATION
University of Alberta School of Business MBA Students Tour the Glenrose
The Glenrose has developed an agreement with the University of
Alberta School of Business MBA program. Currently MBA students are
supporting a number of commercialization projects with the Glenrose
Rehabilitation Research, Innovation and Technology Hub (GRRIT). To
advance this relationship Dr. Geoff Gregson, Glenrose Senior Consultant,
Commercialization and Technology, arranged a tour for a group of
full-time first and second year MBA students. The students range in
background and area of interest. The tour focused on highlighting the
exciting advancements and opportunities for collaboration that are
offered at Glenrose and in the public health sector in general as a way
of enticing the MBA students to consider future Glenrose capstone
projects.

AWARDS & HONOURS
Glenrose Dental Clinic Receives Commendation
Earlier this month the Glenrose Dental Clinic received commendation from a patient who attended the clinic.

“The staff and physicians at the Glenrose Dental Clinic
are absolutely amazing. From my very first phone call,
they were comforting and understanding about fears and
anxiety around treatment. They made me feel comfortable
and cared about. I highly recommend this clinic.

I have always had a great fear of dentistry but this was
an incredible experience and I’m actually looking forward
to my next visit. Grateful! This is how dentistry should be
     being done.”

Glenrose Celebrates the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife
The World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses
play a vital role in providing rehabilitation health services at the Glenrose. To celebrate nursing contributions, the
Nursing Professional Practice team will be featuring Glenrose Nurses in various roles, throughout the year with
monthly publications of the Nurse to Know. Glenrose staff can join the 2020 Year of the Nurse celebrations, by
viewing the Nurse to Know display posted on the Life Long Learning Tree located on the main floor wall, between
the front entrance and the Corner Store.

February’s Nurse to Know is Catherine (Cathy) Hill, Interim Senior Operating Officer at the Glenrose.

What does wellness mean to you & why is it important?
“…to me, wellness means a combination of physical, emotional & spiritual health. I learned a long time ago that in
order to care for other people, you need to care for yourself…”

What small things do you do to give yourself your best day?
“…I look after my physical self through proper nutrition, proper sleep, exercise
& relaxation…”

How do you relax at the end of a work day?
“…I am a foodie and like to cook, once supper is finished, I enjoy reading &
watching TV, walking my 2 little dogs, going to the cottage as much as I can,
and recently I’ve begun to create tile mosaic artwork to decorate my
garden and the gardens of my friends…”

Over the past decade, what Alberta Health Services events or
accomplishments stand out to you?
“…there are many, but becoming Alberta Health Services to begin with –
bringing programs together from all different zones was a huge undertaking.
There has also been a lot of work done to help improve patient wait-times;
development of electronic managerial tools that help make things run more
efficiently; the overall culture of AHS has evolved, and all of these efforts have
helped our front line staff in their daily work, have contributed to improved patient care; and for the 3rd year in a row,
AHS has been named to Canada’s Top 100 Employers…”

What influenced your choice to become a nurse?
“…I remember being a very strong student in the sciences, and I grew up in a small community with no hospital but

                                                                                                                      Page 6
BUILDING ABILITIES FOR LIFE: NEWS FROM THE GLENROSE REHABILITATION HOSPITAL (GRH) - Alberta ...
with a strong public health nurse presence. I became very interested in the type of work those nurses were doing to
contribute to the health of our citizens…”

What is the greatest reward that comes from holding the position of Senior Operating Officer at the
Glenrose?
“…as a newly graduate nurse, I had never envisioned that I would ever work with a team of professionals
besides nursing, allied health and physicians. I am so proud to have support from researchers, rehab engineers,
motion analyst and others who hold unique positions here at GRH…”

What qualities do you value in your fellow nurse leaders?
“…I value each person’s unique skill-set; and need to recognize the expertise of non-nurse leaders as well.
Integrating everyone’s knowledge & skills benefits all of us; I admire the experience of my colleagues, their
dedication, and the support they offer…”

What do you see as the future role of the nurse at the Glenrose Hospital?
“…I would love to see nurses play a larger role in research activities. Staying current in the world of research
ensures that nurses are always able to provide evidence-informed decisions about best practice methods of
patient care delivery; the nurse of the future will need to be ‘tech-savvy’, and will need to have a vision of how to
support patients in creative, non-traditional ways; nurses of tomorrow should focus on helping people achieve their
health goals within their own unique patient-centered circumstances…”

What is one word of advice you would give to a new graduate nurse?
“…find a clinical area that you’re passionate about; embrace the commitment to life-long learning and evidence based
practice; consider all opportunities that are presented to you…”

Glenrose Sexual Health Service (SHS) Celebrates Sexual Health Week
In recognition of Sexual Health Week at the Glenrose, the Sexual Health Service celebrated Valentine’s Day by touring
the hospital with information about the GRH Sexual Health Service.

The Sexual Health Service hosted a presentation by Marni Panas,
Program Manager of the Alberta Health Services, Diversity & Inclusion
department. This excellent presentation was an interactive and dynamic
session where participants explored and applied an inclusive lens to
patient & family centered care. Understanding AHS’s commitment to
diversity and inclusion created a lively discussion around some of the
key concepts of diversity, equity, equality and intersectionality and how
this impacts and relates to our patients and the families in rehabilitation.

All staff, patients, families and caregivers were invited to drop by the
Sexual Health Service information display for resources about sexual
health.

First-Ever Charcuterie Fundraiser a Huge Success
On February 12th the Glenrose Foundation hosted a charcuterie night at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Over 60
people attended the event where they learned about local meats and cheeses and built their own charcuterie boards.
ECC’s Executive Chef Serge Belair, along with Meuwly’s co-owner Peter Keith educated the crowd about the do’s and
don’ts of good charcuterie, then they cracked open the giant parmesan wheel, passed the prosciutto and the real fun
began. Guests left full, with to-go boxes stuffed with leftovers. The event was such a success, the Glenrose Foundation
is already planning another one. A date should be announced in the next few months.

                                                                                                                   Page 9

Circle of Courage Impact Event
Since 2013 a special group of donors has committed at least $1000 each to join the
Circle of Courage. The group funds critical projects and equipment at the Glenrose
Hospital, including the Clinical Driving Simulator, the Pediatric Family Room and the
EKSO skeleton. On February 27th the Glenrose Foundation invited all members of
the Circle of Courage to attend a special impact event where they saw first-hand the
impact of their donation. They were taken to various areas of the hospital to view
the equipment and programs and hear from the staff about the impact on their
patients’ lives. Everyone who attended was incredibly moved to hear how much their
donations meant to advancing rehabilitative care and helping people who had been
through serious injury or illness reimagine their futures.
