Career Resources for Aviation Students

Think about your skills
A degree in Aviation Technology from the University of Leeds gives you excellent career prospects as demand for flights
continues to grow. Careers in the airline and aviation industries are wide-ranging and the solid engineering base and
broader aviation knowledge you have developed give you a head start in this industry and other branches of engineering.
Whilst the course is often seen as a first step towards gaining a commercial pilot’s license it also equips you with the skills
necessary for aviation operations and management. You are also well-placed to embark on a career in related areas such
as air traffic control, safety management, accident investigation, maintenance and in technical sales, marketing and
aircraft brokerage: some also secure roles in manufacturing, research and development. Aviation graduates from Leeds
have gone on to work for airlines, engineering companies, airports and the RAF whilst some have found employment in
areas such as tourism and higher education. Your degree programme emphasises the development of ‘transferable
graduate skills’, such as:

Problem Solving – Throughout your course, your individual and group project work will have developed your project
management skills and you will have had lots of opportunity to demonstrate your creativity and flair for problem solving.
For instance your final year team project will have given you the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge gained
throughout your course to tackle problems similar to those you will meet in industry.

Commercial Awareness – Professional pilots and senior managers from the aviation industry have provided specialist
input throughout your degree ensuring your knowledge of advanced communications and navigation systems,
management techniques and strategic thinking are always highly relevant to the industry. The department also has links
with the University’s Institute for Transport Studies, several airports and the flying school who are actively involved in
collaborating project work, thus giving you a good understanding of the profession and a competitive advantage when
starting your career.

Communication – Your group work will have enhanced your communication skills as you will have presented reports and
will have needed to convey ideas to a variety of audiences, ie. fellow students and academics and to colleagues during
work experience. If you have studied a modern European language as part of your course this will appeal to future
employers in a range of industries as the job market is becoming increasingly global.

Team Working – Project work is a major feature of your course from the outset, giving you plenty of opportunity to apply
your skills to real engineering problems and allowing you to hone your team working skills.

Your course will have given you all these skills and others like numeracy, initiative and project management. Refer to the
‘Options with your subject’ sheet www.prospects.ac.uk/links/options for further information. It is a good idea to think
about ALL the skills you have developed in different situations as you will have acquired a good many others during work
experience and your extracurricular activities. Have a look at
http://careerweb.leeds.ac.uk/info/4/make_yourself_employable/179/how_to_develop_your_skills and list the skills you
have to offer with examples.

What motivations and values influence your job choice?
The skills you can offer are part of the story, but you also need to consider factors like values, interests and
motivation in deciding on a fulfilling career. You can use the Prospects Planner
(www.prospects.ac.uk/links/pplanner) career planning tool to help you decide.

Air Cabin Crew

Speculative approaches to airlines are common. Research the airline you are interested in thoroughly and target your
application accordingly.
Recruitment agencies rarely handle vacancies.

Air Traffic Controller:

Airline Pilot

There are virtually no recruitment agencies dealing specifically with airline pilot vacancies, but advertisements sometimes
appear in trade magazines. Air training schools are often notified of vacancies.

Have you considered postgraduate study or research?
Each year some Aviation Technology graduates decide to continue with their studies. Many choose to specialise further
by continuing with an MSc or PhD degree in subjects such as Computational Fluid Dynamics and Transport Management
whilst others go on to pilot training school. There are opportunities for some engineers to undertake research projects
which are funded through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships or EPSRC case studentships. The following sources are
