The Downlands Prayer
Lord, be with us in our studies that we may master the difficulties and be formed by wisdom and knowledge.
Be with us in our sport, that we may win without boasting, lose without begrudging.
Be with us in our leisure time, that our pleasures bring us no shame, but rest to our bodies, peace to our minds.
Be with us with our friends, that we may be ready to help whatever the cost, bring happiness wherever we go.
Be with us in the Chapel, that we pray and listen and worship and let you guide our lives.
Lord, make us strong in faith, courageous to follow your call, true to you, to Downlands, to ourselves.
Amen.

From the Head of Co-Curricular

Dear All,

Welcome to Downlands College. This booklet gives an overview of the Co-curricular Program at the College in 2019.
It is a broad program and hence this booklet provides a general account only of the requirements of co-curricular activity.
Activity specific details which contain more detailed information such as rehearsal/training times, venues, conductors,
coaches and tutors details and other helpful information are provided by the Head of Sport and MICs at the beginning of each
season.

As detailed herein a large number and diverse range of activities are on offer for the students at Downlands. With this array
of activities, students of all abilities are catered for. The College values co-curricular involvement as an important means
of developing essential life-long cultural/physical skills, positive attitudes and healthy behaviours. Parents are strongly
encouraged to be involved in their children’s co-curricular pursuits, particularly through their attendance at performances and
matches.
This attendance is invaluable and creates an environment which is conducive to quality performances and helps develop
a united, supportive approach. We appreciate the time and effort required of parents and thank you in advance for your
support.

I look forward to an enjoyable year of co-curricular activity and I encourage all students to be involved in a balanced way in
the co-curricular opportunities available at the College. If you have any further questions please contact me as we all work
together for the development of a quality program of co-curricular activity at Downlands in 2019.

Yours sincerely

Mr John McAtomney
Head of Co-Curricular

MSC Vision in Education
MSC schools exist to proclaim and witness to the love of God. They aim to make Gospel values real in the lives of young
people, their families and the staff who serve them.

With care, compassion and understanding as their hallmark qualities, MSC schools strive to build a community of faith among
staff, parents and students. Great value is placed on commitment, trust and acceptance of others in fostering the growth of
community. In the spirit of a loving and supportive family, members help one another grow in knowledge, faith and service.

While aiming for excellence in the search for truth, MSC schools recognise the importance of balanced human development
and strive to help young people to achieve their full potential in all areas of life, and to be ready to show initiative in parish,
    religious and civic life.

Staff relate to students with compassion and availability, creating a sense of family which permeates their attitude as
professional teachers and caring adults. Staff also relate to each other with the same sense of understanding and care,
ministering to each other in an atmosphere of friendship and collegiality.

    College Vision Statement
Our approach to education can be summed up in a simple phrase: The heart of education is the education of the heart.

We are attempting to engage hearts and minds in the classrooms and other school activities. We recognise that the best
learning and best learning outcomes are the result of good relationships between people. Good discipline also comes from
good and healthy relationships between people in the school community. We enjoy celebrating our difference and we are
aware that in all we do with the young people in our care, that - we are reaching out to the future.

Again, in simple terms: at Downlands we are about loving young people into the fullness of human life. To help us in this
    we have the most wonderful tools at our disposal: teachers passionate about teaching and learning; supportive parents;
generous support staff; the key learning areas; extra-curricular activities and generally happy young people. Downlands and
the students, teachers, staff and parents who make up the school community are all human and are “works in progress” and
therefore are not perfect. However, the aims are clear and each day is a contribution again to this ‘work in progress’.

We want to be like Jesus who loved with a human heart.

Co-Curricular HANDBOOK - Downlands.qld.edu.au
Co-Curricular Overview
Downlands College offers a diverse co-curricular program, with The Arts and Sport being major parts of
this extended educational experience. It is not a condition of enrolment that all students contribute through
participation in some area of the co-curricular life of the College, but it is desirable that this be the ideal.
Participation by all according to the relative interest and abilities of each student is sought and valued by the
College, parents and students.

The co-curricular sphere of College life is one where most parents feel that they can become comfortably
involved and it is the medium through which parents can develop a network of adult friends, get to know many
of the College staff and it provides parents with a means of meeting their daughter’s and son’s student friends.

It is our responsibility as co-curricular staff to make parents/carers (particularly those new to the College) feel
welcome, included and to encourage their participation and involvement in meaningful ways within this sphere
of College life. The Friends of the Performing Arts (FOPA), Sport Supporters (DCSS) and Agricultural Supporters
are parent support groups that welcome newcomers and there are numerous other ways for parents/carers to
contribute to the co-curricular life of the College.

Rehearsal/Training/Performances/Matches
During the season, rehearsal/training generally consists of one or two sessions per week for most activities and three for
some Firsts teams. Matches for many sports take place on Saturdays, although there are some exceptions to this e.g. touch
football, basketball, volleyball, senior girls netball. Details for rehearsal and training times are communicated to students
via the Daily Student Notices/My.Downlands, on The Arts and Sports noticeboards, on respective Facebook pages and for
parents/carers this information is available on the College website. Facebook is generally the most up-to-date source and
therefore parents and students are asked to consult it for current co-curricular information.

Sport Policy
It is an expectation that when students enrol at the College and wish to play sports that are offered in the
College Sporting Program, they will, as a first option, play for the College.
When students choose to play sports with other associations and at the same time play sports for the College, then the
    following will apply:

    1. All players selected in “A” or “1st” teams must fully commit to and honour all programmed games and trainings for that sport
    as a first priority.
    2. If a student wishes to play external sports/activities organised by other associations, which will clash with the College
program, then they cannot expect to be selected in the “A” or “1st” team for that sport on any permanent basis.
    3. Where point “2.” is the case, it is the student’s responsibility to make this intention known to the senior coach, in the age
group they intend playing at the beginning of the College season, so appropriate adjustments may be considered.
    4. Students will be allowed to participate in a maximum of four College team sports in any calendar year. Student participation
in the sports of swimming, athletics and cross country are exempt from the capped team sport arrangement stated above.

Player Court / Field Time Policy
The following points are made as a general statement about students who participate as College representatives
    in competitive sport.
    1. The major focus of our co-curricular program is to have extensive student involvement and participation though there are
sometimes situations in which this may not occur.
    2. A player selected in a team must fully commit to and honour all programmed trainings and games for that sport
    3. If the above is done then it is reasonable for a player to expect an equitable amount of time on the court/field as all the
    other players in their team.
    4. A student who is on the sideline as a ‘reserve player only’ could not expect point ‘3’ to apply. A reserve player is one who
usually plays in a lower team who is there in case of injury and thus game time will vary from time to time.
    5. There are for some Firsts teams and some circumstances in which point ‘3’ will not apply. The Merici/Chevalier Cup,
Finals and Grammar Days would be examples such situations where the best/strongest possible team will be fielded for
    the game period.
6.Members of teams where this is likely to happen will be made aware of this prior to committing to the team at the beginning
of the season and before “final style” games. If players are unwilling to agree to this condition of team membership, then they
should play for a lesser team where this is not a requirement.

    Return to Play Policy
Any student who is excused or excluded from school sport due to injury is asked to provide the College with a copy of the
clearance to resume sporting activities issued by the attending Doctor.

Any student who is excused or excluded from participating in school sport due to injury must provide the College with written
consent from a parent or carer in addition to written consent from a medical practitioner (including College Health Centre
staff) stating the student is fit to resume sporting activities.

Re-entry to sport must be through training before a return to match play.

When returning to match play, it will be a cautious approach and the player will be introduced gradually to full game time.
This is to ensure player well-being and that duty of care has been used.

Where recommended by medical staff, the College supports the use of braces (e.g. knee or ankle) and/or strapping tape to
avoid “re-injury” and to increase player confidence when returning to sport.

Student Expectations & Responsibilities
Student Behaviour
It is of the utmost importance to us as a school community that students understand that it is a privilege,
not a right, to represent the College in a co-curricular capacity. There is a Co-curricular Code of Behaviour Level
System in place which ensures that expectations we hold of students representing us are made very clear.

This document also assists the Co-curricular Behaviour Committee (i.e. Mr Morrison, Mr Bulkin and Mr McAtomney) in
determining suitable consequences should inappropriate student behaviour need to be addressed. There is now a consistent
response to student misbehaviour whether it be in class or in a co-curricular context.
Please take the time to familiarize yourself and your son/daughter with this Code of Behaviour – see Appendix I

Attendance
In planning rehearsal/training sessions and performances/fixtures, the College attempts to minimise the likelihood of clashes
between co-curricular activities. If a clash occurs between two co-curricular activities, the student is to advise both coaches/
conductors of the situation. The coach/conductor of each activity will then explore the situation together and advise the
student of the solution. Rolls are kept by the coach/conductor to monitor the commitment of members/players throughout
the season and will become a record of a members/player’s participation and eligibility for various awards, ensemble/team
photographs and so on.

It is essential that members/players give notice to their coach/conductor of any absences that will occur during the season.
This includes absences due to illness, injury and other school/ family commitments and applies to both REHEARSALS/
TRAININGS and PERFORMANCES/FIXTURES. Failure to attend rehearsal/training without a satisfactory explanation may
result in players not being allowed to participate in performances or fixtures. It is however assumed that the dedication and
enthusiasm of all students who have been chosen in a group/team will mean that this situation should not arise.

Commitment
The College encourages all students to actively participate in the College’s co-curricular program. The College
does not allow students to join club teams that would then play in opposition to existing College teams.
Students who accept membership of an ensemble/team or squad must also accept all the commitments that
are associated with that membership.

The core commitments include:
  • Giving maximum effort and commitment to ensemble/team members and conducting/coaching staff at all times.
  • Being punctual in attending all rehearsal/training sessions and games/performances.
  • Completing any officiating or duty requirements.
  • Supporting fellow team/ensemble members in their matches/performances.
  • Taking responsibility for communicating rehearsal/training times, fixtures/performance details and transport arrangements
on a weekly basis to parents and carers.
  • Bringing all necessary equipment to rehearsals/trainings and matches/performances. This includes personal safety
equipment such as mouth guards, water bottles and for ensemble students, instruments and music.
  • Meeting all uniform and behavioural requirements for all rehearsal/training sessions and games/performances.
  • Maintaining eligibility to represent the College in co-curricular activities by meeting Behaviour Management System
expectations in regard to behaviour levels.

Team/Ensemble Selections
Each association has different laws governing the number of teams that can be entered in the various age groups for each
sport. Where possible, the College attempts to place each student in an appropriate team/ensemble. There are, however,
some activities that require a selection process to occur. In these instances, trials/auditions will occur prior to the season.
Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and talents.

Teams are selected by the relevant coach/conductor on the criteria of performance, attendance, attitude, behaviour and
team/ensemble balance.

Equipment and Safety
     Playing and Personal Safety Equipment
The College provides sufficient general equipment for students to undertake all the sports offered. For some activities, such
as Tennis and Cricket, it is acceptable for students to have their own personal sporting equipment. Some sports offered at the
College require compulsory personal safety items such as mouth guards, shin pads, protectors and boots. Students who do
not have these items may not be able to train or play fixtures.

     Uniform
     Competition/Performance Day
As an ambassador for the College, the playing/performing uniform should be worn with pride and in the correct manner always.
In some cases (mainly winter sports) students may be required to wear their school formal uniform to and from the match. Some
Firsts teams have a post-match function and are expected to be dressed appropriately for these occasions. Please consult the
Head of Sport, relevant MIC or your coach/conductor for specific information on the uniform requirements for each activity.
Uniforms may be purchased from the College Uniform Shop prior to the first performance, fixture or trial match.

     Training/Rehearsal Day
Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing to training/rehearsal. It is a requirement that students have appropriate
footwear for their specific sport. Open shoes such as thongs or sandals are not suitable. If training/rehearsal is held in the
morning before school the expectation is that all students are required to be in their school uniform before the first lesson.

     Water and Food
It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they have their own water bottle and that it is not shared. Most
opposition schools/clubs and associations provide a canteen at their venues, so students can purchase a snack and drink if
they require food before or after sporting matches. Boarding students are catered for.

     Medical Forms
Parents/carers are asked to ensure that the College has updated student medical details. This confidential information will be
used by the College to assist if there is an accident. All accidents and injuries must be reported to the College on an Incident
Report form by the coach/conductor in-charge at the time of the incident.

We will be attentive to all human needs and aspirations, such as the need to be respected as persons,
the need for love and truth, for freedom, justice and truth and the search for meaning in life.

Training, Transport & Weather
Transport
The College provides transport to carnivals and fixtures that occur during regular school hours and for
calendared sporting/performance commitments. Transport details for other co-curricular commitments will be
communicated in the Daily Student Notices and in some instances on the website.

Bus Code of Conduct
Most excursion organisers will have hired transport specific for their activity; however, in the event that
Downlands College students are travelling on public buses, students must show respect to all other bus users,
the driver, members of the public and fellow students. On public transport Downlands’ students should give up
their seat to adults if all the seats are taken.

The primary concern of the College for students travelling on buses is safety. With this in mind, the following rules apply:

1. Students must remain seated while the bus is in motion
2. If the bus is fitted with seat belts, then these must be worn for the entire journey
3. All bags should be placed under seats - never in the aisle or on seats
4. Food and drink is not to be consumed on the buses
5. Years 11 & 12 students will travel at the back of the bus, younger students behind the driver and other students between
     the two groups.
The purpose of this is for the senior students to take responsibility for the bus, hence they need to:
     a. Model good behaviour
     b. Assist younger students
     c. Try to stop poor behaviour in the correct way or report poor behaviour to the supervising teacher
6. Seats are taken on a ‘first come’ basis. No student is to save a seat for another student.
No student should occupy two seats while others have none
7. Students are financially responsible for any damage they inflict on the bus or the property of any other traveller through
     their actions
8. The College uniform should be worn correctly at all times when travelling on the bus.

Disruptive students may be excluded from travelling on the bus service for a period of time to ensure the safety of others.
Persistent misbehaviour may result in students being suspended from using College provided transport. In these situations,
the student will need to find their own way to sport and any other co-curricular activities.
All students have a right to feel safe when travelling to and from the College. If you feel harassed or you witness another
student being harassed, you have a responsibility to try to support the student appropriately and/or notify the relevant
supervising staff member by phoning the College on 07 4690 9500.

Training/Rehearsal
Changes to training/rehearsal times will be communicated by the coach/conductor to all players/members
through Daily Student Notices/Student Cafe. In most cases, training will still occur in the event of wet weather
as teams will often work under cover for training or in classrooms. If for some reason training/rehearsal cannot
occur players/members will be notified as soon as is possible. Coaches/conductors will endeavour to dismiss
students from training/rehearsal sessions at the advertised time.

Inclement Weather
In relation to cancellation of matches due to the weather, a decision is usually left to the early morning for
Saturday fixtures. If there is no word, please assume the game is on and follow the advertised playing details.
In the event of wet weather during fixtures, the Head of Sport will contact the coach to confirm if play is still
possible. Cancellation of games made on match days will be determined at the venue and teams will need to be
present. The Head of Sport or relevant MIC from each school or sporting association (e.g. Toowoomba Netball
Association) will make a decision on the future of play.

Netball cancellations can be confirmed on the Toowoomba Netball Association hotline 07 4635 9762.

     Communication
A Downlands College Sport Facebook page exists and has become the preferred means of communication
from the Sports Department to Downlands families.
This allows the Head of Sport at the College and/or MICS to communicate with families quickly and conveniently. They can
post a message regarding a postponement, cancellation or change of arrangement which can be instantly accessed by
families who wish to follow Downlands Sport. Alternately, families may choose to read the most recent posts from the Sports
page on the College website www.downlands.qld.edu.au

This account has been established solely to provide messages regarding cancellations, postponements and last-minute
changes of arrangements. Please note - this is NOT a means of seeking details or answers to questions that parents may have
about sporting fixtures, arrangements or problems. Please do not reply to posts (messages); rather, email or telephone the
MICs (Masters/Mistresses in Charge) of specific sports if you have need for further information about your child’s sporting
     involvement at the College.

Please support the use of this social media by understanding that it is solely for the purposes of us making information more

Co-Curricular Codes of Conduct
For:
       Players
       Teachers and Coaches
       Officials
       Parents and Spectators

Downlands College through its involvement with GPS, Toowoomba Secondary Schools Sports Association
and Toowoomba Club Associations aims to provide opportunity for our students to take part in a wide range of
sporting and cultural activities.

Through our co-curricular activities program, the College seeks to promote skill development, teamwork and
leadership through coaching by teachers and others who are equipped with the necessary skills and experience
to work effectively with young people. Downlands College encourages students to pursue excellence in sport
and other activities where they possess talent or interest.

The encouragement of skill development and the pursuit of excellence should never be at the expense of fair
play, good sportsmanship and friendly rivalry and the College has developed these Codes of Conduct to provide
guidance for all people who have an involvement in co-curricular activities. The College hopes that these codes
will encourage teachers, coaches, parents, officials and players to contribute to the development of a healthy,
enjoyable and safe environment for all sporting and cultural activities.

Players - Code of Conduct
All players are requested to:

  • Play by the rules and accept the officials’ decisions.
  • Display good sportsmanship and fair play at all times.
  • Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please your parents or coaches.
  • Take pride in the improvement of your skills and your performance and remember that sport is not just about winning.
  • Work equally hard for the benefit of yourself, your team and your school.
  • Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.
  • Co-operate with your coach, team mates, opponents and officials. Without them there would be no competition.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Remember that verbal abuse of officials, sledging of other players and deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent,
    are not acceptable behaviour.

   importance of fair play.
 • Teach players the rules of the game and ensure they observe them.
 • Develop in players, respect for opponents, officials and opposing coaches.
 • Provide positive feedback when players improve their skills or performance and help them acquire a sense of achievement
   when this occurs.
 • Remember that young people participate for pleasure and that winning is only part of the process.
 • Remember that players need a coach they can respect, so set a good example by displaying control, respect and
professionalism to all involved with the sport.
 • Keep informed of current coaching principles and the principles of growth and development of students of all ages.
 • Inform players of the immediate and long-term benefits of participating in sporting, cultural and recreational activities.
 • Be committed to remove verbal and physical abuse from all activities.
 • Be reasonable in your demands on player’s time, energy and enthusiasm
 • Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. Follow medical advice when determining whether an injured
player is ready to recommence training or competition.
 • Ensure that any physical contact between yourself and a young person is appropriate to the situation and necessary for
the player’s skill development or safety.

 • Place the safety and welfare of the players above all else.
 • Keep up to date with rule changes and with the latest trends in officiating.

   play our sport.
 • Acknowledge the important role played by your child’s coach and give them your full support.
 • Remember that the competitive games your child plays are primarily organized for their benefit and enjoyment, not yours.
 • Please note that the use of bad language and the harassment of players, coaches, and officials has no place in any area of
   co-curricular involvement.

 • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

     Downlands College Co-Curricular Grievance Process
During the course of any co-curricular activity, it may occur that a student or parent has concerns about a
particular matter e.g. team selection process, team selection criteria, player safety or the conduct of players or
     spectators.
Students are always encouraged to, in the first instance, have face to face conversation with their coach (or
equivalent) regarding any issue of concern. If this does not clear up the issue, then the process outlined below is
     to be followed:

     1. Where a student and/or parent has a continuing concern or grievance, in the first instance the student and/or parent must
complete the Grievance Form (available online) and forward this to the appropriate Head of Sport, MIC of the activity and
cc a copy to the Head of Co-curricular. Under no circumstances is a student and/or parent to make direct contact with
the coach and/or manager of the relevant team regarding this ongoing grievance.
     2. The Head of Sport will acknowledge receipt of the Grievance Form within 24 hours of its receipt. All matters of concern
raised will be dealt with confidentially.
     3. The Head of Sport will consult with the relevant coach and/or team manager and/or MIC of the sport, regarding the
          substance of the concern.
     4. The Head of Sport will then make personal (e.g. telephone) contact with the student and/or parent to resolve the
          concern.
     5. Where such contact does not resolve the concern, the student and/or parent are invited to meet with the Head of Sport
and relevant coach and/or manager to discuss the matter further.
     6. Where such a meeting does not resolve the matter, the student and/or parent are invited to arrange a meeting with the
          Head of Co-curricular.
