How does online learning work?
We are all learning how to do things differently due to social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions and lots of
our courses have moved to online delivery. At Newcastle City Learning we are proud that we can continue to
provide our courses, just in a slightly different way.
You may have concerns that learning online may leave you feeling alone, isolated and unsupported. What we are finding is the opposite,
and that it’s actually a great way to stay connected, and to develop new digital skills alongside your course content, which is increasingly
important in the current work climate. And lots of our learners are also telling us how easy they found it, despite their initial worries. Here
are some of the things that could happen with your learning with us. Remember, face to face support is always available if you need it.

All of our courses will be delivered online, using a virtual classroom (in which you will be able to see, hear and interact with other course
members) and online resources for independent study. If your class is two hours long, it is likely that your online classroom session will
also be two hours, but precise delivery will vary between courses. Please see the individual course information available on our website
for full details of what is covered in your course and how it will be delivered. During the term when elements of face to face teaching
can resume this will be discussed with you, and will take place at one of our centres.

Face to face support is always available if you need it.

NCL news
The winning entry of our Art
     Competition is called ‘Unite’
     by Margaret Hunter.
Margaret is now retired, having worked
previously as a Florist and a Learning Support
Assistant for children with learning disabilities.
She has 9 grandchildren and has completed a
number of art classes with us in the last few years.
She continued her learning with us online throughout
lockdown and entered our competition to create a
piece of art for the Skills Centre building where our
study programme learners attend their courses.
Margaret says “I hope my artwork sparks imagination
about the possibilities that art can open up in life. You are never too old
to learn new skills and broaden your mind. Painting enriches the soul
and as well as developing a skill, it soothes the mind and improves mental health.
Art is for everyone; it doesn’t discriminate no matter who you are. It makes me extremely
proud to have had my work selected for display in an environment dedicated to the younger generation”.

Nothing is going to stop us now – our learners tell their online learning success stories

“I was a bit apprehensive with the distracting in the straightforward and effective. I would

IT skills aren’t the best (probably an this means you looking for an outlet after retirement.”
understatement!), but with the help can just focus on John Kimmitt

What will you get from an
apprenticeship?
The new apprenticeship standards develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours
helping you to start a new career or advance in your current position.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to train again.
I feel a sense of achievement and gained new skills
 and knowledge for the apprenticeship.”
Julie Darby, Business Administration Level 3,
 Walbottle Campus

“Throughout my apprenticeship, I was able to learn
all the necessary skills which have helped me gain a
full-time administration position within Newcastle City
                        Council.”
Stephen Mugford, Business Administration Level 3, Newcastle City Council

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still
recruiting and training apprentices. Many new
techniques have been implemented for remote
training and support which we will continue
to use until we can fully return to classroom
  teaching.
All teaching, learning and support will be “Covid
safe” for our staff and learners.
This does mean we can offer this training to
  those a little further afield.
Join a class remotely using Google Classroom
