Obligation
I do hereby promise on my honor as a Scout, that I will always
and faithfully observe and preserve the traditions of the Order
of the Arrow, Wimachtendienk, Wingolauchsik, Witahemui. I will always
regard the ties of brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow, as lasting, and
will seek to preserve a cheerful spirit even in the midst of irksome tasks
and weighty responsibilities, and will endeavor, so far as in my power lies,
to be unselfish in service and devotion to the welfare of others. Our 40th Year – Brief Chapter History
Pre-History
• In the 1940’s and early 1950’s Nentico Lodge had a few chapters
• For an undetermined reason, these chapters were disbanded by the mid 1950’s
• By the early 1970’s interest in organizing chapters once again peaked with many youth
• In the fall of 1973 a Lodge subcommittee was formed to develop a plan to implement chapters;
Joel Meredith as youth Chair and Pete Price as Adviser
• The committee met over nine months; a draft plan for chapters was presented in September of
1974 to the Council Executive Board and a final plan present at the fall GLM in October 1974.
• Initially, there was a desire to organize chapters by Districts, but many who were opposed to
chapters rejected this. Thus, the compromise was struck to organize chapters by Service AreasOur 40th Year – Brief Chapter History
Formation of Chapters
• Nentico Lodge formally authorized & organized lodge wide chapters in the fall of 1974
• The First Chapters started on January 1, 1975 based on the three Council Service Areas
• Northeast / Central / Southwest
• National Pike was part of Southwest Chapter
• Service Area Chapters lasted for five years
• Transition to District Chapters occurred on January 1, 1980
Nentico Lodge R-1 Issued in 1975Our 40th Year – Brief Chapter History
Founding & Early Years
• National Pike officially organized on January 1, 1980 from the Southwest Chapter
– First Chapter Chief – Greg Nuesca
– First Chapter Secretary/VC – Doug O’Connell
– First Chapter Advisers – Garland Funk
• Garland had served as the Southwest Adviser for its first five years and continued as NP
Adviser through 1983
• Doug O’Connell served as Chapter Chief in 1981, then went on to serve as a Lodge
officer, Lodge Chief, Section Chief and Region ChiefOur 40th Year – Brief Chapter History
Legacy
• National Pike has operated continuously without interruption for 40 years
• During its 40 year history a number of NP Chapter Chiefs have gone on to serve
with distinction as a Lodge Officer, Lodge Chief or in a Section, Region or National
leadership role. This speaks well of them and the support the chapter has provided. Our 40th Year – Brief Chapter History
