Preface
Welcome to the 93rd Annual Meeting of the German Society of numerous sponsors. Special thanks go to the symposia chairs
Glass Technology (DGG) taking place from 13th to 15th May, who did their very best in composing and organizing the respec-

140 oral contributions arranged in seven topical sessions and
more than 40 posters cover a wide scope of topics reaching from
the fundamentals of the glassy state and amorphous materials,
atomistic modeling, issues related to the glass surface, to glasses
for health care, medical, biological, and optical applications, and
finally to energetic and environmental issues and glass production
technology. For the first time, a full program strand specifically
addresses our students. It comprises, the annual student work-
shop “Glas?Klar! – Clear as Glass” as a vital part. Besides this,
a technological workshop in German language is offered. It has
been designed for the needs of industry personnel.

The Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (the
cities of Erlangen and Nürnberg together constitute a large urban
area) is a major site for education in science and engineering
in Germany with approx. 40,000 students. It hosts a faculty of
engineering comprising a department devoted to glass science
and technology. It is headed by Prof. Dominique de Ligny, chair
of this conference and local academic host. His department is a
vital part of a Bavarian glass network comprising the Fraunhofer
Institute of Silicate Science, Würzburg, as well as other universi-
ties and universities of applied science in Nürnberg, Regensburg,
Deggendorf, Coburg, Hof, the Glass School in Zwiesel, and the
Center of Technology in Spiegelau. These institutions form a vital
part of the so-called Glass Road extending throughout Eastern
Bavaria.

Nürnberg was one of the most important cultural centers of Ger-
many during the periods of renaissance, humanism, and the refor-
mation, with an impressive development of craftsmanship and
long-range trade. Sadly, it also played a key role during the dark
period of the III. Reich. The city of Nürnberg is just within walking
distance from the conference venue. It has so much to offer that
it is virtually impossible to list all details. A simple stroll through
the city is already most rewarding. Do not miss the rich offer of
excellent local Franconian food. Many museums may be visited,
among which the Railway Museum (just around the corner) is
especially recommended. So there is plenty to enjoy after work.

Last but not least, the organizers want to express sincere
gratitude to the many contributors to this event, as well as to the
