SELECTION THE 15 BEST DRAWINGS 2018

The Antwerp University & Panathlon Drawing Contest
                             is a yearly international contest
where students are invited to create a drawing
related to fair play in university sport.

With the contest, the PCU Committee aims to develop a synergy between
the worlds of student art and student sport on an international level,
implementing the first fundamental principle of the Olympic Charter
which states, inter alia, that Olympism blends sport with culture and education.

Diving is a spectacular and beautiful sport that strengthens your spirit, health and discipline. Inspired by exceptional
technique of Cubism, I decided to make a geometric shapes painting. Water, as a powerful and unmanageable
element, is depicted by geometric shapes in dark colors. The prevailing dark tones symbolize an unknown
future. And suddenly a breakthrough! Bright colors break through into the unknown, like the rays of the sun and
hope. Just like in sports, proving that the impossible is possible. That is what I wanted to depict in my painting.

"Sporting Compassion" is an amalgamation of ideas that people might often perceive as
contradictory. It shows that we can be both competitive and compassionate in sports,
that we can be inclusive even though we might not wear the same colored jersey as our
opponent, and that fair play requires us to treat others with respect, no matter what color
one's skin is, nor what gender one is, nor what country one belongs to, no matter what
the odds are. Playing fair does not mean that we downplay ourselves, but that we give
others an equal opportunity to be a part of the game. I believe this is what Olympism
stands for, and, every now and then, we see how people break man-made boundaries by
forwarding their hand in help. As a character in a book, I once read, said: "If you have a
choice between being right and being kind, choose to be kind."

Referencing the composition
of Henri Matisse’s masterpiece
“The Dance”, I draw a connection
between art history and Olympic
traditions that both have been
shaping our society since its very
beginning. Just like five Olympic
Rings are linked together to
create a greater whole, five young
athletes are united in one fluid
continuous movement, holding
hands and dancing in celebration
of their unity and equality.

While sport and art may seem to
be radically different disciplines,
a closer look shows that they
have a lot in common. Allowing
us to escape the limitations
of a spoken language, they
become the most universal
ways to express ourselves and
connect on an emotional level.
They empower us individually
along with inspiring the whole
communities to come together
and share universal passions.

The sparkle from the crackers marked the victory which was restricted neither to the colors to the nations nor
the races. What won that day was sportsman spirit. Athlete, the one who is not within the barrier of his/her physical
disabilities, is the rightful heir of the champion's podium. The shine of gold, silver and bronze was not enough
to overshadow the enthusiasm and happiness for each other in their nerves. Swords of hardships, no doubt, are
inescapable but then, after witnessing the shimmer of sunlight and showers of clouds the beauty of rainbow is
visible. What such events conclude is that who emerges victorious are not the sportsmen, but the sport itself.
Yes, in the end no one can disagree that memento embraces the glitter of sweat, blood and dust of holy arena…

This artwork is inspired by a true story from another part of the world about a high-school race run by teenage girls. One
of the girls, who was approaching the finish line, collapsed at one moment. She got up several times, but every time she fell
down again. According to the race regulations no one was allowed to help her. And no one did, so as not to be disqualified. No
one but one fellow runner, who stopped and picked up the poor girl. This act of true fair play was completely spontaneous
and unreasonable in its complete and essential humaneness. They reached the finish line together. And, of course, both of
them were disqualified. Although one race was lost, a greater one was one won: as a result the regulation of automatically
disqualifying runners who are helping each other was immediately changed.

Sports and games is devoid of race, religion
and disability. We play, we fall and then we
rise; we win together and that team spirit
makes the bond stronger and everlasting.
It's all about binding the entire nation through
   sports.

The artwork shows the runners who are just finishing the race and are helping each other. As I dwell through the
idea of fair play, I stumbled upon a sight. The idea of fair play is to give all of you during the competitions. At the end
of the day we are all human beings that need each other for the glory that unites us through respect and kindness.

The illustration shows the celebration of passing the spirit of fair play. The concept is about passing the spirit of
fair play from the Olympic Games to the University Sport as the action of valuing the spirit of fair play and universal
friendship shown by the professional athletes will have a positive impact on the ethics in university sports.
The illustration is created by overlapping shapes to create a dynamic feel and looks more like a
sports poster. The colors of the Olympic Rings are used as the colors of the confetti and the end of
the flame is modified into a handshake to represent the spirit of fair play and universal friendship.
