  Principal’s message:
  .

Tena koutoa ngā whānau katoa o te kura takawaenga o
  Whakaoriori.
Ka nui aku mihi ki a koutou ki runga i te kaupapa o te
wāhanga tuatahi o te tau nei.

A huge thank you to the vast majority of our MIS students who have entered the
2021 school year with enthusiasm, energy, kindness and a willingness to be
involved in what our kura has to offer. Thank you also to our parents /
caregivers for the support that you have already given to your child. A great
example of this was the 97% turnout that we received at our interviews on
February 1st and 2nd for new students who have arrived here this year.

If there are any adults who may have a spare hour each week to assist us with
our Rotarian Reading programme, we would love to hear from you. Robert Young
and his team do an outstanding job offering one-on-one reading support to three
students for thirty minutes each on a weekly basis and are keen to recruit some
additional helpers. Please contact me through the school office on 370-0088 if
you would like to offer your support.

Our sympathies are with the family of Sheryl McNamara, who
passed away last Thursday. Sheryl was a valuable staff member
at Masterton Intermediate for several years, fulfilling the roles of class
teacher, syndicate leader and relieving teacher.

  A message from Ms Geange:
We are now well into Term 1 and it has been great to see our new students settled and getting involved in the
  many activities on offer.
I would like to thank the 78 students who submitted applications to be a student leader for 2021. These
applications were of a high standard that showed their understanding of what leadership entails for them as
students of Masterton Intermediate School. I would like to congratulate the following students for their
  selection this year:

A message from Miss Woodward:

I have been so impressed with the Art Extension
students this term. We have been doing still life
drawings in a variety of media and have had fun
mixing colours and painting with watercolours. All the students
are positive and doing their best with the tasks, even when some
of them are tricky!!
The mural option class is also doing great work. Odessa Lehmstedt
has designed a fantastic mural for one of the bike shed walls, so
watch this space!

If your child has a chromebook to use at school, it will need to be
brought to the Deputy Principals’ office to get put on the system
by the team from Technology Solutions. There seems to be some
confusion as to what this means. This means that the
chromebook can be used at school and at home but with only the
student’s school account. No other account can be used. The
chromebook will be managed by MIS so that use of the device can
be monitored by us. It is not for snooping purposes, but purely to
safe guard us and your child with their internet use. Students can
still access all of what they need to for their schoolwork and
general entertainment. The agreement that you signed as part of
the enrolment process informed you about this. Any queries,
please email beth@mis.school.nz.

                               News from the Cooking Room

So far this term we have cooked Kiwi Pizza (aka cheese on toast), Croque Monsieur,
 Macaroni Cheese and Apple Crumble
Peyton Room 4 had this to say about the Croque Monsieur ‘It was delicious, soft and creamy
on the inside and crunchy and crackly on the outside’
Saiylor Room 4 had this to say about the apple crumble ‘it wasn’t too sweet, the apple was
warm and crunchy, the berries added to the overall flavour. The silky whipped cream went
 well with the crumble’

Croque Monsieur Recipe
 Ingredients
 Béchamel sauce:
            50g unsalted butter
         • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
         • 1½ cups milk
salt and freshly ground black pepper
         • 1/4 teaspoon dijon mustard
 Sandwich:

             • 8 thin slices white sandwich bread
                 8 slices of ham
         • 6 ounces Gruyere cheese, or Cheddar cheese, grated (about 2½ cups)
         • 1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
 Method
 Béchamel sauce:
             1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for
about 3 minutes. Gradually add milk, stirring well until the mixture is smooth. Cook, stirring, until
                sauce is thickened.
             2. Season with a little bit of salt and pepper. Remove from heat and whisk in mustard and nutmeg. Set
aside while you make the sandwiches, or make the sauce up to 1 week in advance.

 Assemble and cook sandwiches:
           1. Preheat oven to 220° C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
           2. Spread each bread slice with a layer of béchamel, spreading it all the way to the edges. Place 4 slices
of bread, béchamel side up, on prepared baking sheet.

           4. Bake (Tumuaki)
at 220 degrees C for about 5-6 minutes, until cheese is melted, and then turn the oven to grill
