EAGLE EYE - MARCH 31, 2021 - Cricket Australia
PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As the summer comes to an end, I will leave most of the on-field reporting to others except to
say that we have made some good progress in the top levels of the Men’s programs, finishing
5th, 5th & 4th in the 1st grade comps and 4th in the 2nd grade.

Having another two West Torrens juniors continue to push on (or back) into higher levels of
cricket in Spencer Johnson (Redbacks) & Bailey Capel (SA 2nd XI) and the recruitment and
performances of Ryan Gibson were other sources of great joy for all involved. It was also
fantastic to see some players score their first tons for the club and the overall improvement
from many of our players across the board was pleasing. We reached 6 Semi Finals in various
Grades/Competitions but alas could not go any further. There were promising signs from the
Women’s 2nd grade team where there were some brilliant performances. It was also very
pleasing to see several of the girls push up and contribute at 1 st Grade level in the absence of
some of our more seasoned players. However, for us to continue to push forward as a club
we need to implore each member of each of the playing groups to consider how they can
improve over the off season and try and do everything possible to come back at the start of
the next season ready to perform at a higher level. Hags & Manning and their coaching groups
are willing and able to help anyone who has higher aspirations and traditionally winter is when
they can do some of their best work.

The board has implemented several new initiatives recently, the first was to appoint a Number
One Ticketholder. This honour was bestowed upon Eagle great Brian Isaac who accepted
the honour while enjoying the company of other fantastic Eagles at the recent Golden Eagles
luncheon at the Lockleys Hotel. It was great timing with the annual Quinn-Isaac Cup being
retained the following weekend against East Torrens. That draw ensured that the Men’s 1st
team wrapped up a finals berth along with the Men’s & Women’s 2 nd Grade teams won their
games in the final rounds to cement their
positions.

On top of the Number One Ticket Holder,
and through conversations with some
prominent club officials involved with other
sports we developed an “official
Ambassadors” program as a way that we
could get past players & officials to stay
involved at the club that they represented so
proudly in previous years. Ambassador
programs have played an important role in
advancing other clubs over the years and
the support provided in advocating,
promoting, and even advising can never be
underestimated. While there is no specific role or duty, there are numerous areas where they
can really help the club. We asked a fine group of people to help, the names include Ian
Chappell, Jeff Crowe, Lindsay Head, Matthew Richardson, Tim Ford, Mickey Dwyer, Andy
Capel, Jack Lukosius, Matty Broadbent, John Lynch. Ian Ravenscroft, Peter George, Leigh
Drennan, Adam Crosthwaite, and Josh Dascombe. We have, very pleasingly, had responses
in the affirmative for the bulk of them and are in the process of announcing the full list via our
Social Media platforms.

The club is in the process of establishing another new initiative with our coaching panel, due
to our very well attended Junior Trials, we have developed a School Holiday Clinic, headed
up by head coach Mark Harrity & Brenton Woolford. The aim is to help develop the next group
of Eagle players and will work in conjunction with our Academy program and give players the
ability to work on their cricket skills throughout the whole year. On the back of the Junior Trial
numbers, we have decided to expand our Academy program significantly as the feedback
EAGLE EYE - MARCH 31, 2021 - Cricket Australia
from the 12 different coaches who observed the players, was that we have a great opportunity
to build upon our program with the hope of getting back to the dominance that we had in the
junior space in the early 2000’s. We have had very fruitful discussions with a couple of past
players whom we see as being integral to help strengthen our training & coaching in the junior
space.

Thanks once again to all our volunteers, and a special mention to all those who have helped
with all the end of season activities. There is always a mountain of work to get through and
without the help of the Huttons, the Capels, the ridiculously hard-working Catherine Terry, and
our fantastic bar “staff”, I’m not sure how everything would get done.

It has been pleasing to see the large numbers of players attending players teas and we thank
the boys for their support and note that the Sheagles have also begun to hold their own players
teas throughout the year. A special thank you to everyone who helps with those activities.
Finally, thank you once again to all the scorers and team managers, we have some of the best
in the business and without naming everyone, it’s been great to see some new people to the
club jump in and help in those capacities as well as those who have served brilliantly for years.

                                  STAN THE STATISTICIAN

Stan the Statistician from Semaphore South says

This season Luke Terry 17 y.o. 2nd Grade wicket keeper took the 2 nd highest number of
dismissals in a 2nd Grade season for the Club with 31 catches and 5 stumpings. It places him
behind Jesse Lewis whose 38 catches and 3 stumpings was achieved in 2002-03.

1st Grade keeper Warren Peters’ catch v. University (Round 12) was worth travelling a long
way to witness. It was not so much the distance which Wazza moved but the speed at which
the ball was travelling and consequently the agility required to make the intercept.

The 2nd Grade Women had a remarkable match v. Glenelg. Playing on ‘pudding’ due to a
deluge the previous day which caused the Men’s 4 th Grade to be abandoned, they scrambled
to 7/104 with skipper Brianna Cheetham compiling a half century. The bowling was the
phenomenal feature, keeping the Bays to 7/43 from their quota of 40 overs. Jemma Torsney
was the destroyer with 4/3 from her 8 overs while Courtney Watt claimed 1/5 (7 overs),
Charlie Henderson-Whitehead 1/8 (8 overs) ‘leggie’ Mackenzie McCauley 0/10 (8 overs)
and Caoimhe Roche conceded just 6 from her 6 overs. Only 8 wides were bowled for the
innings which is exemplary for the 2nd Grade.

EPIC SHEAGLE – EAGLE VICTORIES

I have been at the West Torrens Cricket Club for 53 seasons and have watched many home
games at our headquarters of Thebarton and Henley Ovals but over 6 days in late February –
early March I was privileged to witness two of the most awe-inspiring victories over those 53
years – one by our Women and the other by our Men – both at Henley Oval. As I am the sole
person with the advantage of attending both matches, I felt that they should be recoded in the
Annals of the Eagles for all to be informed.

Sunday February 28 Women’s 2nd Grade v. University
For this round 8 players were unavailable for the Women’s 1 st Grade due to WNCL
commitments, serious injury and other commitments. At the same time 3 more regular 2nd
Graders were unavailable due to injury and other reasons. Consequently, the Sheagle 2nd
Grade was represented by a virtual 3rd XI with substitutes found from past players and West
Torrens players’ friends. The usual opening bowler 16 y.o. Jemma Torsney withdrew with
an Achilles injury but when she discovered that the team had only 10 players, the Ardrossan
recruit volunteered to ‘limp around the field’ and bat at #11 – true Club loyalty and absolute
resolve.

The major obstacle was that the opposition University was firmly entrenched in the four and
fielding that Club’s 1st XI.

The girls contained the opposition to 159 with 12 y.o. ‘Charlie’ Henderson-Whitehead
bagging 3 wickets, Caoimhe Roche claiming two and former Australian Swimmer and Water
Polo player, Susie Smith, sliding, diving, writhing and launching her body at various angles
around the field. The long run chase began with stoic skipper Brianna Cheetham opening the
innings and scoring 116 before being dismissed when the scores were tied. A quivering
Jemma hobbled to the centre, took block and slogged the first ball over mid-wicket for a truly
memorable win. Brianna was the pivot around which the victory was centred, but 10 other
determined women, most still at school but some of a more mature vintage, showed complete
determination to stay in the middle with her to build partnerships. Susie (24 balls faced) Chloe
(18 balls) Caoimhe (30 balls) Emillya (14 balls) held their wickets intact for considerable
periods of resistance while the Bri piled on the runs.

An epic victory for the young Sheagles, a real David and Goliath story (or maybe a Ruth and
Naomi tale).

Saturday March 6 Men’s 1st Grade v. University

The following Saturday the Men’s 1st Grade needed to dismiss University to keep alive their
chances of a Finals berth. Having compiled 9/366 the previous Saturday (probably worth 400
due to the sluggish outfield) with gratitude to a memorable unbeaten 154 from Bailey Capel
who was ably supported by Pat Fisher and Ryan Gibson. Daniel Drew wisely declared
overnight to have maximum time to achieve a win. University lost two early wickets as the
youngest of three left-arm quicks Murphy Short made inroads assisted by a Warren Peters
catch which Mark Bosnich would surely have failed to ‘push around the post’. However a
lengthy partnership of 207 righted the Varsity ship.

At 3/303 and with less than 10 overs remaining it appeared that a draw was imminent.
However ‘The Blacks’ launched a belated assault, but quickly lost 3 wickets, all to Daniel
Drew’s ‘offies’. They then decided to ‘close the shop’ and defend. However Spencer
Johnson, recently returned from a Marsh Cup match with SA, dispatched a series of new
leather missiles at a speed invisible to the octogenarian eye. At the opposite end he was well
supported by Sussex bound Sean Hunt. The two ‘southpaws’ shattered the stumps of the
remaining batsmen on four occasions for zero runs in five balls. Sean claimed the seventh
wicket with the final ball of his 18 th over and handed the ball to Spence who ‘disturbed the
batsmen’s furniture’ on the first, second and fourth balls of his 20th overs. A monumental
victory of epic proportions.

What was extremely satisfying, was that both victories were against University, a Club which
has to rely heavily for its personnel on other clubs developing young players. I wiped a tear of
joy from my eye and exited the Eagles’ Eyrie with the glow of a sated epicurean. I had dined
on a cricket feast which will live in the memory.

Postscript

It was ironical that we met University in the Semi-final but under somewhat different conditions.
In this instance West Torrens had to win, University only needed a draw under the Premier
Grade By-Laws. With a declaration not compulsory at any stage of an innings the toss decided
the result. University batted for FIVE of the SIX sessions knocking out any chance of the
Eagles advancing to the Grand Final.

To rub salt into the wounds, our boys were heading upstairs after the game to have a drink
with the opposition and offer best wishes for the following week only to find that they weren’t
interested and were heading out for a centre wicket practice.

In round 11 we played Adelaide at Glandore and batting first we made 317, Bailey Capel with
a well-made 93, Ryan Gibson continued his dominance making 145 off 200 balls and Tom
Sibley made 33. Adelaide were quickly in trouble and were all out for 120 with Spencer
Johnson taking an outstanding 5/59 in his comeback game to West Torrens. They followed
on and finished with 3/178.

In round 12 we played Adelaide Uni and Bailey Capel continued his good form with 154 from
264 balls, Pat Fisher made 58 and Ryan Gibson 44. They then batted and made 319 losing
their last 4 wickets for no runs, Spencer was outstanding at the end bowling 3 batsman in 4
balls to take the points against arguably the best side in the competition.

We then played East Torrens in a rain shortened match, they made 9 for 256 off 91 overs with
Spencer Johnson again bowling outstandingly well taking 6/77 off 28 overs. We then batted
and after being in trouble at 3/20 we recovered to finish with 7/199 with Fisher batting very
well to make 78 not out and Daniel Drew making 43. Results fell our way and so we made the
final round.

In the Semi-Final Adelaide Uni won the toss and batted and batted and batted to finish with
7/428 off 150 overs and the game was then called off, Josh Slee and Daniel Drew taking 2
wickets each, it was a disappointing end to the season however having both the first and
second grade teams make the finals was a significant improvement from the previous two
seasons and we look forward to pushing for premierships next season.

WOMEN’S 1st GRADE

The final three rounds of the season were a mixed bag for the Sheagles. Seriously depleted
with anything from 5 to 8 players missing through national and state commitments, serious
injury or country engagements, some very young teams took the field.

For the Round 8 match against Kensington former star allrounder Lauren Ebsary was enticed
to don the colours again. She showed that she still could be a force at 1st Grade level with a
quick-fire 52 from 61 balls with 5x4s and a six in a total of 94.

Round 9 was a match that was our last chance to make the finals and all Scorpions players
were available, except that on the eve of the game Cricket Australia sent word that Tahlia
McGrath was not to play, with the rider that she was required ‘to rest’ as the only explanation.
She hadn’t played for 7 days and there was a gap before her next match. However fellow
Australian team-mate Megan Schutt (an allrounder in 1st Grade) was permitted to play without
any restrictions placed on her. Incidentally Tahlia was 4 votes short of winning another Rolton
Medal but not permitted to play in this match.

The team pulled off a fantastic victory against Northern Districts in the final round of the
season.. The new ball was handed to 13 y.o. Maggie Clarke from Jamestown whose 9 overs
yielded the figures of 4/23 (plus a catch and a run out). She was ably supported by 15 y.o.
Emily Parsons with 3/17 (from 8 overs). The target of 149 was reached with the loss of just
two wickets, veterans Ang Treloar and Caroline Ward and the youthful duo of Paris Hall and
Kayla McGrath guiding the team to the victory. Emily also played six games in the Boys
Under 14 Reds (girls permitted to play up two years over age) where she took 6 wkts. @13.50
and an Economy rate of 1.85.

                                     MEN’S 2nd GRADE

Round 11 saw us play Adelaide at home. We won the toss and sent Adelaide in to bat.
Adelaide got off to a good start losing their first wicket at 61. Tight bowling by the Eagles
attack resulted in wickets falling constantly from this point. In the end Adelaide were bowled
out for 159 in the 71st over. Lachie Pointon and Billa Maegraith bowled beautifully with 5
wickets and 4 wickets, respectively.

Our run chase did not start well losing Tom Maegraith early. A second wicket partnership of
118 between Tom Woolford and Eric Carrington steadied the ship before Lachie Pointon
joined Woolford at the crease to add another 57 runs. We chased the runs down easily and
set about trying to set a total which might entice the opposition to have a crack, but the match
petered out with the Eagles winning on first innings. Tom Woolford was outstanding with a
brilliant 103, ably supported by Eric Carrington with 46 and Lachie Pointon on 39.

Round 12 was played at Park 12 (Uni Oval) against Adelaide Uni. Uni won the toss and elected
to bat on a flat deck amassing 166. Lucas Gammon was superb with 4 for 29 from his 12
overs, well supported by Josh Slee who bowled 13 quick overs taking 2/24. The Eagles rocked
up the next week looking to chase the total down and cement their spot in the four. Much to
their surprise after a week of dry conditions the pitch appeared to be damp, and they were
rolled out for a disappointing 78. Billa Maegraith was the only batsmen to offer any resistance
making a determined 22 of 67 balls. The result of this round meant the premiership table had
tightened up considerably with the Eagles hanging on to fourth spot by a small margin. It
would come down to the last minor round game to determine who would play finals with Uni
to play their final game against cellar dwellers, Prospect and the Eagles playing 7 th place East
Torrens at home.
The Round 13 clash had East Torrens win the toss and throw us into bat on a flat home deck.
We lost our openers early but some solid batting from Carrington (55), Pointon (41) and Billa
(55) saw us set the opposition an imposing 196 to chase down. Great interest was also being
taken in the Uni v. Prospect clash as an outright win by Uni would be enough to dislodge the
Eagles from 4th spot.

Our bowlers came out and got the job done with good support in the field. Ben Williams was
superb in his opening spell finishing with figures of 4/22 of 18 overs. He was well supported
by Gammo who bowled with good pace and accuracy to take 4/23 of his 12 overs. Tom
Kennewell finished with 2/28. As luck would have it, Prospect hung on to be 8/92 in their
second innings narrowly avoiding an outright loss and the Eagles had hung onto 4 th spot by
.08%.

The semi-final had us playing the minor premiers Glenelg at the beautiful Glenelg Oval.
Unfortunately we lost the toss meaning Glenelg would bat first and only needed a draw to
move through to the grand final. Our bowlers started brilliantly with James Reuther grabbing
two wickets to have the Seahorses at 2/4 in the 3rd over. Glenelg dug in and got to 65 before
losing their next wicket. A hundred run 4 th wicket stand raised concerns before the Eagles
fought back hard to have Glenelg sitting at 7/190 at stumps on the first day. We needed to
take the 3 remaining wickets quickly the next day to keep the run chase low. Unfortunately
Glenelg added another 50 runs on the Sunday morning before we finally got them all out for
241 in the 118 over. Not only had they batted slowly but they batted for an extended period
of time meaning we only had 61 overs to chase the total down. James Ruether and Tom
Kennewell were brilliant toiling all innings to finish with 4 wickets each.

Our run chase did not start well losing Wooly early. Tom Maegraith (29), Lachie Pointon (22)
and myself (42) tried hard to build a platform where we got to 3/92 and were placed to have a
crack but a devastating spell of bowling from Glenelg’s left arm quick saw us capitulate losing
7 for 24. In the end we were bowled out for 116 in the 43rd over.
Whilst the end result was devasting for the team, this is the second year running we have
made the finals and the depth in our club should mean we continue to build on these
performances next year. Thanks to all at the club for their support and assistance throughout
the season and most importantly thanks to the players who it has been an honour to lead
through the year.

Nick Crouch B Grade Captain

                                  WOMEN’S 2nd GRADE

After a lengthy break of four weeks between matches, round 8 saw us come up against a
strong Uni team, and as with the season up until this point, we again fielded a very different
team to our last outing. The bowlers worked hard with Charlie Henderson-Whitehead finishing
on 3/35 and Caoimhe Roche 2/23, but Uni were able to build partnerships and finished with a
strong score of 159. The chase got off to a slow but steady start with the team 5/76 shortly
after drinks, and with a string of 20-30 run partnerships we managed to get over the line with
one wicket and three balls to spare! (Brianna modestly omitted that she batted until she was
the 8th wicket to fall for a magnificent 116 from 127 balls – Ed.)

Round 9 saw a much more comfortable win, set up by outstanding bowling from Claire Harvey
(5/15) and Mackenzee McCauley (4/13) which saw Northerns all out for 43, the team then
chased this down with little trouble.

The final round of the season saw us taking on Glenelg on an interesting Henley High School
pitch, after being sent in to bat it was a slow slog with the wicket unpredictable (after being
turned into a swimming pool the day prior), some solid batting from Mackenzee helped us to
post a competitive total of 104. Our bowlers then went to work with Jemma Torsney (4/3 off 8
overs) ripping through the Glenelg top order and putting them on the back foot, however we
were unable to finish them off, the innings ending at 7/43.

Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way in the semi-final with Kensington posting a competitive total
of 8/145 and we never really got going in the run chase, ending up all out on 97. It was a
much-improved season having made the finals in both formats, hopefully next year we can go
even further.

Brianna Cheetham Captain

                                     MEN’S 3rd GRADE

A successful run by the 3rd Grade to finish off season 2020/21, which resulted in the team
narrowly missing out on a finals birth. A comprehensive victory over ladder leaders Adelaide
was followed by an outstanding batting performance vs. Adelaide University, with both games
having significant individual performances.

Brady Williams bowled with pace and bounce against Adelaide to take 5/23 from 14 overs ‘on
the trot’ with the new ball, which was then support by Jarrad Hoskin’s innings of 65 to chase
down Adelaide’s modest total of 152.

Adelaide University posted 209 batting first on day one in Round 12, with some lusty hitting
by the lower order. Jack Hawke benefited from some aggressive pace bowling to take figures
of 3/37 off his 12 overs. In reply, an opening stand of 115 set the team up to chase down the
total at a rapid pace to try and set up an outright victory. The innings contained a special knock
from Callum Agnew, scoring his maiden senior hundred of 109. Agnew was ably supported by
a swashbuckling innings of 80 from only 56 balls by Nathan Marshall. A dominant batting
exhibition.

A final round washout vs. East Torrens brough the season to an abrupt end.

I would like to thank all 18 players, parents and volunteers who contributed and supported the
3rd Grade this year. We have a fantastic group of people that make this club what it is. Enjoy
the winter and see you in season 2021/22.

Manning McInerney Captain
MEN’S 4th GRADE

In Round11 we hosted Adelaide at Henley High School. Adelaide batted strongly to be all out
for 245 – Bowling highlight was Josh Joseph getting 5/57, supported by wickets from Jared
Zunic 2/36. An unfortunate accident during the week left us without Kyle Lieblich and only 10
batters. Jay Hoffman (41) and Alex Hutton (27) batted well but unfortunately we were all out
for 103 and were sent back in. Darren Joseph (27), New Maguire (23), Alex Hutton (18) and
Luke Edmunds (17) was not enough to prevent an outright loss – all out for 123 in controversial
circumstances.

Round 12 we headed into the city to play Adelaide University. We won the toss and elected
to bat. Ned Maguire (35) was the standout in terms of runs but a final wicket 10 over stand by
Finn Fontaine and Sebih Masih provided some highlights. Adelaide University batted for 35
overs and declared at 136, setting up a chase for an outright win. Riley Williams 3/39 was the
best bowling of the group. We went back in to bat – Opener Alex Hutton (44) set up the innings
with support from the rest of the team and we were all out for 140. This left 16 overs for
Adelaide Uni to make the runs or for us to bowl them out. Adelaide Uni were confident but with
Josh Joseph 3/49 and a run out on the final ball
(Hoffman/Edmunds) the game ended with a first Junior Sponsor
innings loss but an overall tie.

With a washout for Round 13 our season was
over.

We’ve had a reasonably settled group in 4th grade
this year and although we’ve only managed 3
wins, several of the losses were very tight and we
were unfortunate not to end up with a better
win/loss situation.

Max Parsons Captain

                                       UNDER 16 RED

The final three rounds of the season saw mixed success with matches against Prospect,
Kensington and East Torrens.

Despite a good run chase (Sean Feleppa 60 runs) against competition leaders Prospect, a
narrow loss (13 runs) resulted. Had a few catches been held a victory was possible and Luke
Tippins efforts with the ball (2 for 20) would have been rewarded.

A disappointing first innings against Kensington (Billy Hawke 29 runs) and some quick scoring
by a confident opposition (Will Pointon 2 for 34), presented the chance of an outright defeat.
In the second innings, dogged defence by opener James Bowyer 14 not out (116 balls) and
Sean Feleppa 51 not out (76 balls) stymied the Kensington attack who ended with a first
innings win. The result later reversed due to an irregularity with one of the Kensington players.

The final round was against East Torrens where we set a competitive target of 187 (Max
Davidson 51). With the pitch offering assistance to the seamers, we were looking forward to
having a bowl, however the rain came and unfortunately washed out day 2.

The team finished sixth on the ladder which was probably a fair reflection of the opportunities
taken and those not grasped.
I’ve been fortunate to watch a number of the lads play their cricket over the past few seasons.
It’s pleasing to confirm their year on year development, maturity and development of match
awareness to adjust their game to the rhythm of the match. Finally, thanks to the coaches for
giving their time and the parents who have assisted throughout the season.

                                      UNDER 14 RED

Needing a couple of wins to close in on an opportunity to play in finals, the Under 14 Reds
were unfortunately unable to produce the consistency shown pre-Christmas.

Chasing 160 to win against Prospect we fell short by 24 runs. Tom Hill batted with great
concentration to compile 39 and Will Mackenzie showed his capability with the bat making 16.
Emily Parsons bowled a superb spell taking 3/27 from her 8 overs.

We bowled and fielded exceptionally well against Kensington, restricting them to 135 – a target
well within our reach. Dan Feleppa and Archie Robertson both bowled well taking 3 wickets
each. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a batsman able to make a significant contribution and we
were bowled out for 99. A disappointing result in a game that we should have won.

The final round against East Torrens was washed out on the second day. We had bowled out
East Torrens for 124 and at 2/27 well and truly in the game. Another fine performance by
Archie Robertson with the ball taking 5/24 from 8 overs. This ensured the young competitor
finished the season as the leading wicket taker for the entire competition with 24 wickets at
11.75. A fantastic effort and great reward for a young man with an enormous amount of
competitive spirit.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Lyndall Feleppa, Russell McKenzie,
Andrew Robertson, Gerry Paul for consistently sacrificing their Saturday afternoons to help
score. To Pete Hill and Steve Molzer who helped set up playing fields and take warm-ups a
huge thank you and your assistance was very much appreciated. To Jarrad and Bailey thank
you for donating your time and expertise to coach a fantastic group of young sportspeople.
While we were unable to make finals, this wasn’t reflective of our team’s progress and
improvement made throughout the year nor our collective ability. I hope above all else the
Under 14 Reds enjoyed playing at West Torrens this year and I look forward to watching their
development in the coming years.

                                     UNDER 14 WHITE

It was a tough last 3 minor round games for our boys coming up against 2 teams that were
fighting for a finals spot and another fully entrench in the top 4.
Round 9 saw us take on Prospect with us batting first and making only 99. Jack Terry opened
and batted beautifully making a well compiled 26 off 74 balls. At stumps after the first day
Prospect were 0 for 25 and fair to say with us
in a bit of trouble. But the following week the
boys showed a lot of character and at one
stage Prospect were 9 for 84 before they then
showed a lot of character themselves and
passing our score and going on to make 124.
Jackson Harriott, Louis Fontaine and Harvey
Stephens were all brilliant with the ball.

Round 10 we played Kensington with Cooper
Arnold making his West Torrens debut.
Cooper bowled and batted well and looked
comfortable at the level. We bowled first and
dismissed Kensington for 108 with Harvey
Stephens best with the ball once again taking
3 wickets. In our chase we were in a good
position at 0 for 31 before collapsing to be 8
for 65 then crawling our way back to 9 for 92
before our last pair Louis Fontaine and
Jackson Harriott fought valiantly to level the
scores but unfortunately that was as far as we
could get and the game finishing in a thrilling
tie.

Our last game against East Torrens was a
disappointing finish to the year with only James Turner and Harvey Stephens doing anything
of note with the bat and Louis Fontaine taking 2 wickets and Harvey Stephens with his third
successive 3 wicket haul which was a great finish to the year for Harvey.

While the results didn’t go our way for our team this season, we were clearly the youngest
team in the competition with 6 boys playing in the team that were still eligible for the under
12’s and 2 boys a month from being eligible for the under 12’s. I felt the boys this season had
a great time and enjoyed being part of the West Torrens cricket club. Thanks to Hosko and
Bailey Capel for putting so much time and effort developing the boys.

Penrith in Greater Western Sydney, he only began playing cricket at Primary School when his
mate’s team was short of players and he offered to ‘fill in’.

His cricket quickly progressed through the Penrith Club until he had two seasons in the NSW
Under 19 side. The talented top order batsman had an outstanding 1st Grade season in 2015-
16 when he hit 204 n.o. against Blacktown and immediately followed up with 217 n.o. v.
Gordon eventually surpassing the 1000 run mark for the season. This propelled him into state
calculations and entrenched hm in the Futures League for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 season.

However it wasn’t for the ‘Bluebaggers’ that he began the 2016-17 season, but in the Cricket
Australia XI in the Matador Cup, the National Domestic One Day competition. The CA XI
comprised young emerging players from the states not included in their 14 man Cup squads.
His debut for CA was momentous scoring 106 against Queensland and winning the Player of
the Match award, which he cites as his greatest cricket achievement to date. As a
consequence ‘Gibbo’ was selected for the NSW Sheffield Shield match against Western
Australia in November 2016. The talented free-scoring right hander was soon swept up by the
Sydney Thunder for the BBL in 2015-16 scoring 53 from 43 balls on debut.

He was recently given a leadership opportunity when chosen to captain a NSW XI against the
British Lions in One Day (Drummoyne) and a Four Day (Woolongong) matches at the close of
the 2019-20 season, leading from the front in the OD with a swashbuckling 87 from 81 balls
including 5x4s and 5x6s.

Ryan held a contract with New South Wales for five seasons but when it wasn’t renewed he
decided to look for greener pastures, so he and his partner Lauren decided to move to
Adelaide. His batting coach knew our Cricketer Director Brenton Woolford, so it was an easy
process for to move to West Torrens. He had also played a couple games with Spencer
Johnson previously and had played a lot against Daniel Drew.

His debut for the Eagles was portentous, scoring 205 from 136 balls (S.R. 151) which became
the highest debut score for the Eagles surpassing Hurtle Willsmore’s 160 n.o. (at #8) v.
Glenelg at Glenelg Oval in 1909. In doing so he also created a number of other records viz.
    - The highest score ever made at Henley Oval, surpassing Lauren Ebsary’s 202 n.o. v.
Port Adelaide in 2010, uniquely both double centuries were made in limited over games
(50 overs). Lauren batted at #3.
    - The fastest male Double Century for the Club
- The fourth highest 1st Grade score for the Club. Test allrounder ‘Danga’ Waite’s 339
       remains the highest.

‘Gibbo’ followed this up with a fine 106 v. Woodville and this coupled with three seasons’
experience with the Sydney Thunder in the BBL gave the Adelaide Strikers selectors the
confidence to offer him a place as a local replacement for Travis Head, who was required for
the Test series against India. His
first outing with the Strikers was
against Sydney Sixers in a pre-
season ‘warm up’ where he
created a suitable impression
slamming 34 from 12 balls.

62 and 137 n.o. v. ACT/NSW
Country in the Futu res League (CA
2nd XI competition) plus 145 v.
Adelaide in Round 11 must have
him in the sights of the Redbacks’
and Strikers selectors for next
season.

He recalls that the biggest
influence on his game as a Junior
was South African Jaques Kallis,
whom he had watched frequently
and had tried to emulate. Kallis’
hunger for runs rubbed off on Ryan
as he feels that scoring 100s
always generates a massive thrill, but he also loves being a part of long format games which
go down to the wire. He is also handy when called to the bowling crease with his ‘leggies’ or
a turn at medium pace.
His comment on the comparison between Sydney and Adelaide cricket is something which
the controllers of SA cricket might find interesting:

I think the standard is pretty similar to Sydney in the games I’ve played so far. I think the
pitches are much better here than what you get in Sydney which is good for a batter. A lot of
the grounds here are multipurpose use where in the Sydney I would say majority are cricket
only.

Ryan is also a soccer enthusiast having played the game in the NSW Premier League before
concentrating on cricket.
CRICKET UNDER LIGHTS at HENLEY OVAL

To try out the new 500 Lux
lighting at Henley Oval, the
Juniors played a couple of T20
matches after their season had
finished. These were the last
games of the season and it
provided a wonderful opportunity
for some of our junior cricketers
to show their skills under lights,
in front of a good sized and very
jovial crowd on a fantastic pitch
(thanks to Trent & Micko).
Photos from the games can be
found in this edition of the Eagle
Eye.

Wednesday 24 March.
The match between members of our U.18 squad, was played with Eagle Blue defeating Gold
Eagles 132 to 123. Eddie Ellicott was awarded the player of the match as voted by the captains
Luke Terry & Sam Turner. Each player bowled & faced 2 overs.

Thursday 25 March
Lights were back on again on Thursday for an U.15 squad T20 (6:45) game with some younger
players playing in the curtain raiser from 4:15. 46 of our junior players had the opportunity to
play on Henley oval, with the second game once again under lights.

In the first the Golden Eagles defeated the Eagle Blues 7/133 to 10/125. For the winners, Elliot
top scored with 11 n.o. Captain Tom scored 9 n.o. and took 1/6 with two amazing catches in
the covers and George finished with 3/3 to go with 10.n.o. While for the Eagle Blues, Max top
scored with 12 n.o. Daniel took 1/4 and made 8 no (which won him a bet with veteran Sam
Ellicott) and Archer finished with 3/5. While no official player of the match was awarded
George’s allround efforts (he kept too) were hard to go past.

In the late game under lights, some highlights were the partnerships of:
  • James T & Archie R (40)
  • Denny & Lucien (37)
  • Mark W & Lewis A (34)

Individually, Cooper and Mark
W led the way with the bat and
James T. and Marco were the
leading wicket takers. In the
main the matchups were
evenly contested although at
times to test some of the
players they were pitted against more developed players. Overall a great learning experience
and thanks to all those who organized, umpired, cooked the BBQ, served the drinks and/or
came along to enjoy a wonderful night of WT Junior cricket!

WEST TORRENS WAR HEROES

A couple of seasons ago, two of our Life Members Brian
Isaac (former President and holder of the record for the most
A Grade matches played) and Charlie Rumbelow (former
Secretary) suggested that the Club ascertain the names of
all of the Hindmarsh/West Torrens players and officials who
served in any of the Wars in which Australia participated and
that the Club honour these people in some way.

As Club historian I have undertaken the research which is
not yet complete. Anzac Day is fast approaching, so it
seems the appropriate time to publish a list of these men. As
the research is on-going, the Club hasn’t yet determined
how it might honour these War Heroes.
