A RECIPE FOR FAMILY FUN
Planning a family cooking night is a great way to teach your kids
about responsibility and nutrition!
Eating well is an essential life skill that can help your children perform better in
school and grow up healthy and strong. Cooking has also been shown to reinforce
skills that are used in math, team building activities and learning to follow
instructions. That’s why groups such as Thekidscookmonday.org recommend
picking a day every week and having the kids help with the cooking.
Sound like fun? Here are a few tips that can help make your first kids cooking
night a sure-fire success.
#1 DIVIDE TASKS UP BY AGE AND ABILITY
Generally younger children will require more supervision when doing things
such as chopping or using the stove. As parents you know your children best, but
generally these more dangerous/technical tasks shouldn’t be given to children
younger than 10-12 years of age. Younger children can still offer a lot of help in
the kitchen with tasks such as measuring, peeling (with a child safe peeler) forming
evenly sized patties and grating cheese, etc.
#2 CONSIDER KID FRIENDLY COOKING UTENSILS
If you do want your younger children to help with more technical tasks (especially
cutting and chopping), you may want to consider purchasing some child safe
cooking utensils. Websites such as curiouschef.com offer a wide range of utensils
to choose from.
#3 KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
The great thing about kids cooking night is that the opportunity for learning
is virtually endless. You can teach the kids about healthy eating by exploring
the nutritional content of your meal ingredients. You can teach them about the
microscopic world by explaining why hand washing and hygiene are such an
important part of the cooking experience. You can even teach them about your
family’s cultural heritage by selecting dishes from your native homelands.
#4 HAVE FUN
The greatest reward of kids cooking night is to enjoy time spent with the people
you love the most, so make sure to have fun with it and you can create memories
that will last a lifetime.
