Hippodrome Les Bigaudières in Erbray

Racing Society Erbray, Moisdon, Nozay. On the Bigaudières racecourse, 3 trot, flat and obstacles
disciplines rub shoulders. Three horse races take place each year. Once again this year, we were
amazed by the quality of the services, both horses and jockeys. The demonstration was made once
again that whoever wins is not always the one who has gone first. Miss Pays de Loire, Diane le Roux
came to support our team of volunteers and lent a good grace to the game of photos. Dates to
remember for the year 2020: June 14 and 28 and July 19, 2020 5 € / adult and free for children

Cycling, roller skating and walking on an old railway line.
In the heart of the countryside, in 2004 the Communauté de Communes du Castelbriantais
(Community of Communes of Castelbriantais) converted an old 13 km railway line into a trail specially
fitted out for cycling, roller skating and walking.
This is an invitation to relax and to get away from motorized traffic ! Country landscapes, forests,
lakes, fields, meadows and typical villages are laid out before you along this path, ideal for all ages
thanks to its gentle slopes. Just take a short cycle ride to discover the tranquillity of the countryside.

FROM ROUGÉ :

from the car park of the old railway station in Rouge, join the Voie Verte and head in the direction of
Châteaubriant. Follow the path all the way to the outskirts of Châteaubriant.

FROM CHÂTEAUBRIANT :

from the car park, follow the arrows to join the green trail. Follow the path in the direction of Rougé
until you have gone through the town.

In July 2005, a new section was inaugurated. The green trail now reaches the borders of the
department, beyond the Teillay Forest, and it promises to extend through Ille-et-Vilaine, within the
Communauté de Communes of Moyenne-Vilaine and Semnon.

The Châteaubriant-Soudan-Villepot Green Trail.
A project to make a 13 km trail is being studied. Procedures for closing and decommissioning the road
have started.

The Châteaubriant
Forges de la Hunaudière in Sion les Mines
A piece of beef taken from a fillet weighing 300g to 400g with unmatched “tenderness” and taste.
According to the dictionary of the Academy of Gastronomes, the Châteaubriant was invented by
Montmirail, the cook of François-René de Châteaubriant, whose ancestors founded the town.
Montmirail dedicated his recipe to the author of “Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe” (Memoirs from Beyond
the Grave).

According to others, this recipe comes from the town of Châteaubriant, renowned for its 19th century
cattle farms, and where the most important cattle market in the west of France still takes place.

The meat from the Pays de Châteaubriant has “its” label.
Tradition Bovine de Châteaubriant is a registered trademark (with official quality certification) which
belongs collectively to the economic players in the local meat industry.
The Académie du Châteaubriant was created in 1994 and is a gastronomic society bringing together
leading local and national figures who want to promote the real Châteaubriant.

Françoise de Foix

Soft pralines with fresh butter, small raisins in rum, covered with bittersweet chocolate fondant.

In 1494, at the time of the Renaissance, Françoise de Foix was born, a beautiful and delicious young
girl, who married Jean de Laval, Baron of Châteaubriant, in 1506 .
Her great beauty and intelligence seduced the King of France, François I, who liked to surround
himself with the prettiest girls in the Kingdom. Didn’t he say “A court without women is a spring
without roses”?
The very beautiful, cultivated Françoise thus became the king’s “mye” (sweetheart) for almost 10
Forges de la Hunaudière in Sion les Mines
years between 1516 and 1525.
It was in tribute to this Lady, who died mysteriously in 1537, that a chocolate maker from
Châteaubriant, created a speciality he named “Françoise de Foix”.

Le Pavé Saint Nicolas

Hazelnut praline candy

Saint Nicolas symbolized the door, the mid-16th century to 1789, the power of the Baron de
Châteaubriant : his audience hall, its officers regulated the manorial rights and dispensed justice.
Adjoining the tower served as a prison. This beautiful set still retains the architectural traits inherited
many changes from the 16th to the 18th. It is because of them, curiously it is commonly called “new
door”.

A protected industrial heritage

From the 5th to the 16th century in Moisdon la Rivière canton and on several sites around
Châteaubriant, iron ore was exploited to produce iron directly in small charcoal furnaces distributed
throughout the forests covering the region. In the coal hall, an exhibition of the history of the
exploitation of iron ore has been set up. A video on the history of the forges is shown after the tour.

Since 1996, Association des Amis de la Forge de Moisdon (Friends of Moisdon Forge Association) has
highlighted the heritage of the new Forge of Moisdon-la-Rivière. This initiative followed the opening of
the Ecomuseum in December 1984. Through various means the association retraces , the fascinating
history of this forge which operated between 1668 and 1968.

A region which played an active part during the Second World War

An area involved during the war Here in this career 27 men were shot in retaliation for the execution
of German Lieutenant-Colonel Karl Hotz in Nantes by three young Communist resistance fighters.
Photo Patrice MOREL

On the same day, 21 other hostages were shot, 16 in Nantes and 5 in Mont-Valérien in the Paris
region.

A first collective execution in France that will outrage the whole world, as the voices of Churchill,
Roosevelt, de Gaulle and Aragon immediately testify.

The Quarry of the Rifles pays tribute to these martyrs of the first hour. Antoine Rohal’s sculpture,
which overlooks the listed historic site, expresses the solidarity and courage of “Those of
Châteaubriant”.

Listed as Historic Monuments, its pedestal incorporates 185 alveoli containing earth harvested from
the Resistance and Deportation sites of France and Europe.

The memorial course is completed by a series of 27 stelae, portraits of these dead men for France.
Today we are the heirs of this story.

The Amicale Châteaubriant Voves Rusty Aincourt, created at the Liberation on September 30th, 1945,
by the families of the shot ones and the former internees, work with the valorization and the
transmission of this patrimony of national interest.

Owner of the quarry and the museum, she organizes every year important popular commemorations
in October, closest to the anniversary of October 22nd.

A town with such a rich past
Châteaubriant was built bit by bit from the castle to the Church of Béré. At the foot of the medieval
fortress lies the heart of the old town with its half-timbered houses, corbels, towers, wall-walks,
narrow streets, alleys and its 18th century buildings, which will tell you about the history of this City
that has retained the contours of a walled town at the foot of the stronghold belonging to the Brients.
The Grande Rue, separated from its extension, Rue de Couëré, by the magnificent wooden Covered
Market, was until 1865 the main road in this medieval city.
The construction of the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) in 1850, the Eglise Saint-Nicolas (Church of Saint
Nicholas) in 1875, the cutting through for the Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville (1850 – 1870) and the arrival of
the Railway (1877) would transform the appearance of this town with such a rich past.
