Helpful Greek Phrases and Words To help you better pronounce the Greek words correct- ly, remember that the letter ‘G’ like in Giassou (hello/ goodbye)ispronouncedasa‘Y’asinYes.Theletter‘E’ like in Ena (one) when it is in front of a consonant is a soft ‘E’ like in Evergreen. When in front of a vowel, it is a long E like in ‘keep’. The letter ‘D’ as in Dio (two) is like a TH as in ‘The.’ Give it a try! Most Greek people are very friendly and will appreciate it if you even say hello in Greek so we suggest you make it a point to try the language! If you think it’s difficult, remember that almost 1 in every 5 Greeks you’ll meet in Athens speak English.

If all else fails though, you can always point and gesture to try to get your point across! Yes Nai No Oxi Do you speak English? MilateAglika? I don’t speak Greek. Den milao El- linika.
