Our stop at Groot Constantia includes a visit to the Manor House which houses a cultural history museum portraying the early years of Groot Constantia. Enjoy a classic cellar tour and wine tasting at Haute Cabriere Estate. Growing only the classic champagne components, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Haute Cabriere is synonymous with tradition and authenticity. After the tasting, we take some time to enjoy the fabled culinary skills of the chefs at one of the many award winning restaurants. Imbibe the atmosphere of this charming French colonial town by enjoying a stroll along the main road flanked by galleries, boutiques, antique shops, bistro’s & cafés, historical buildings and speciality.

Depart Franschhoek and travel via the Helshoogte Pass into historic Stellenbosch. The latter part of the day sees you travelling along the most scenic routes of the Peninsula back to your hotel. EXPERIENCE! A splendid way to get to know the Mother City intimately, starting with a hike on the geographical formation which guards her – Table Mountain. After lunch(to own account), explore the history, architecture and culture which makes Cape Town the colourful and vibrant city it is today.

There are numerous paths on which one can set off on foot, and tidal pools on almost isolated beaches.

Enjoy the breath-taking views from Cape Point Lighthouse and travel to the most South-Western point of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. In the late afternoon, drive along the coastal route via Noordhoek, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Hout Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard back to your city based hotel. The tour commences with collection from your hotel and transfer to the lower cable car station at Table Mountain. Meet your accredited walking / hiking guide. Hike up the easiest and most direct route to the top of Table Mountain which follows a well- constructed trail up a deep ravine on the iconic front face of the mountain.

The route tops out near the upper cable station. We then traverse the length of the famous table top summit to the highest point on the mountain – Maclears Beacon at 1087m – for more great views. Once you descend the mountain by cable car (weather permitting), transfer to the colorful Bo-Kaap where you will enjoy a traditional lunch (to own account) while learning about the contribution of the Cape Malay people to South Africa’s, and Cape Town’s heritage. An exploration of the heritage trail of public art in inner city Johannesburg that celebrates the colourful culture, history, and heritage of Johannesburg. Part of the tour includes street art which creates a meaningful appreciation of Johannesburg’s culture and artistic expression.

If time allows, a visit to artists’ studios in Newtown may be included. EXPERIENCE!

For an escape from the city, this day is dedicated to visiting three of the most prominent gardens in and around Johannesburg. The tour explores the natural beauty of areas dedicated to conserving the botanical heritage, fauna and bird species who call these gardens home. In Fordsburg, Johannesburg, visit the Gandhi Memorial outside Hamidia Mosque. This is the place to where Mahatma Gandhi led 3000 followers across all religious groups and they burned their ‘pass’ documents. In 2007 artist Usha Seejarim, commissioned by the Sunday Times Heritage Project, marked the spot with a sculpture of a potjie (a three-legged cast-iron pot) beneath which is placed a wheel, that when spun produces an image of a pass document burning.

In Newtown and Maboneng you will have the opportunity to visit studios at The Bus Factory and/or Arts on Main which offer workshop and gallery space for established and up-and-coming African artists. In Newtown you will also stop at the fascinating Brenda Fassie Memorial. This bronze sculpture is one of 40 memorial art works placed by the Sunday Times around the country to celebrate its 100th birthday, and to promote national identity. The sculpture, by artist Angus Taylor, is a 1570 metre, life-size statue that is an unusual pose of the top selling pop diva, known to her fans as Ma Brr. Brenda Fassie was an anti-apartheid Afropop singer known as the ‘Madonna of the Townships’.

On the same avenue is the Johnny Walker Pioneering Spirits of Jazz Walk of Fame monument and close-by are the SA Mine Workers’ sculptures. The day includes a stop for lunch. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon around 17h00.

Depart the hotel and proceed to Mushroom Farm Park, located in the heart of Sandton. Enjoy a birds-eye view of Johannesburg on a 15-minute balloon ride. This large helium balloon is tethered to an underground cable, released slowly via a sophisticated engine and coil system, using safe helium gas. Continue to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. Formerly bare sports fields, it is now botanically diverse with a combination of open spaces, marshland, trees and an indoor garden with 85 species of succulents and cacti from all over the world kept in six glass houses (open for viewing by appointment only).

Around midday continue to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. Although always a popular destination, this 300ha botanical garden was only founded in 1982. Visit Witpoortjie Waterfall and try to spot the nesting pair of Verreaux’s (black) eagles that call the cliffs their home. This is the only known pair of Verreaux’s eagles in Johannesburg. Lunch (to own account) may be enjoyed at the restaurant on site. End the day with a delightful visit to the Montecasino Bird Gardens - the only bird park of its kind in Africa and Jo’burg’s best kept secret. Here, you can wander along enchanted walkways and marvel at a variety of colourful birds, mammals, reptiles and unusual animals from around the world.

In the walk-through Aviary, you’ll find over 60 species of birds including Scarlet Ibises, and Nicobar pigeons, reptiles and small mammals, with smaller antelope wandering freely in the undergrowth. Depart the park and make your way back to the hotel where the tour ends upon arrival at approximately 17h00. full DAY Private ILIOS TRAVEL 77 johannesburg with a twist day tours full DAY Private BACK to contents BACK to contents

Duration ± 8 hours Freesell Up to 24 hours prior to departure Participants 2 – 16 per vehicle Vehicle Minivan, Minicoach or Luxury Sedan, Minivan Guide English speaking THETA accredited Includes No entrance fees required Excludes Lunch EXPERIENCE! Inspiring and informative, this tour traces the steps of Mahatma Gandhi during his time in Johannesburg: from Gandhi’s first arrival in the south of Johannesburg to central Johannesburg where a plethora of buildings mark Gandhi’s influence. Visit landmarks of potent historical value that sparked the creation of the Satyagraha movement. EXPERIENCE!

Johannesburg has benefited from visionaries of the likes of Sir Herbert Baker.

This fascinating tour traces his architectural legacy around the city. Visit iconic buildings that have been awarded World Heritage status that bear the imprint of this most renowned name in South African architecture. Our first stop for the morning is at Constitution Hill where, in 1908, Gandhi was imprisoned in the Old Fort on a two-month sentence for actively refusing to be registered and have his fingerprints taken while resolutely remaining in the Transvaal. Today it houses a permanent exhibition on Gandhi’s South African sojourn titled ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ focusing on Gandhi’s imprisonment and the satyagraha campaigns.

There is a replica of the pair of sandals Gandhi once gave to General Jan Smuts. There are several other fascinating exhibitions here relating to Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment and the Women’s Gaol. Continue to Museum Africa and on to Hamidia Mosque, the place to where Gandhi led 3000 supporters – among them Muslims, Hindus and Christians – and burned their ‘pass’ documents. In 2007 artist Usha Seejarim, marked the spot with a sculpture of a potjie (a three-legged cast-iron pot) beneath which is placed a wheel, that when spun produces an image of a pass document burning. The day also includes a visit to Satyagraha House which was the residence of Mahatma Gandhi in 1908 to 1909.

The house is run as a guest house and museum and is a registered part of South Africa’s heritage. Retracing Gandhi’s experiences in South Africa and particularly those that he shared here with his friend Herrman Kallenbach, is installed in the very heart of the house. In this way, a peaceful and meditative atmosphere channelling Gandhi’s life within these walls inhabits the property. Following this insightful and inspiring day, return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Through the day you shall stop outside various residences and buildings such as Pilrig House. It is a good example of the arts and crafts style: very simple, good proportions, use of natural materials like stone, sand and timber, and the result is a very attractive house.

Next door is St Margaret’s which is also a Baker house and now a national monument. St Margaret’s was built in 1905 and is not visible from the road, but what a pleasure it is to walk up the driveway through what must be one of the most stunning gardens in Johannesburg. On the same road is the Stone House – Sir Herbert Baker’s residence and the first house he built in Parktown. Proclaimed a national monument in 1968, Stone House was sold to the grandfather of the present owner, McKenzie, on Baker’s departure for India in 1912. It was Baker’s home for ten years and must be one of the few houses around that is as attractive from both the front and the back entrances.

The afternoon sees you enjoying the views from Munro Drive and through Northwood en route to your hotel.

The Berlin Falls - likened to the shape of a giant candle - cascade from the centre of a sheer cliff that stands roughly 80m tall. The Lisbon Falls - named after the capital of Portugal - lie in the Lisbon Creek just north of Graskop and the waterfall is 94 metres high.

Continue to the Three Rondavels for a spectacular view over the Blyde River Canyon. Shaped like traditional African beehive huts, the Three Rondavels form three pinnacles of rock rising above the canyon. Drink in the dramatic views before proceeding back south along the route to the Bourke’s Luck Potholes. This formation is the result of decades of swirling water where the Treur River meets the Blyde River, the tumult of which has caused extensive water erosion over time. After enjoying the spectacular and humbling views at God’s Window, continue back to Graskop where the tour will stop for lunch at one of the restaurants in town.

The day ends with a visit to the historical mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. You will have the opportunity to visit the Printing Museum, the House Museum, the Dredzen Shop Museum, Alanglade House Museum and the Diggings Site Museum. There is also an opportunity to experience gold panning (additional charge). Depart Pilgrim’s Rest and travel back to Hazyview where the tour will end at approximately 17h00.

As a result, there are many “permanent residents” who are “ambassadors” for their respective species. Members of the public are therefore able to get an up close and personal experience of these incredible creatures who demonstrate the threats and problems our wildlife is facing today. HESC houses a number of animal species including cheetah, African wild dog, lion, African wild cat, Ground hornbill, Sable antelope, to name just a few. Visitors view the resident animals in close proximity, in a habitat simulating what they would experience in the wild. Guests are also afforded the opportunity of watching rare African vultures feeding at the Vulture Restaurant. Upon conclusion of the tour travel back to Hazyview where the day ends with return to your hotel at 17h00.
