Executive Summary

Our new Strategy 2027, which was approved at 2018’s Annual General Meeting, could
never have been achieved without our members’ input and advice. Thanks to the
collaborative effort, we succeeded in developing an ambitious plan that aims to put
Reineke Hameleers animal protection high on the EU’s priority list in the coming years.

Eurogroup for Animals As a result, we’re now on course to start the new legislative term with a clear five-year
sub-strategy, or ‘road map’. Also developed with the valuable input of Members via all the

plan that will go into the operational detail. The annual work plans are the final step in the

President, Eurogroup for Animals 2019-2023 In A Nutshell presents our coming battles for the period leading up to 2023. It
(Director, Dyrenes Beskyttelse) outlines the state-of-play for each of our five policy areas, as well as our horizontal areas
                                        - Cultivating a Supportive Political Environment and Trade and Animal Welfare - and our
proposed Flagship Campaigns, tools by which we and our Member Organisations can truly
                                        drive change together.

Most importantly, though, it identifies a timeframe for the ambitious achievements that
we hope to accomplish by the end of this first five-year period. These could be guidelines,
Philip Lymbery standards, stronger language, revisions, better enforcement, or entire changes in legislation
Vice President, Eurogroup for Animals or completely new laws, but they all have two things in common - they are urgently needed,
(CEO, Compassion in World Farming) and will pave the way towards long-lasting positive change for animals in Europe.

We also hope 2019-2023 In A Nutshell will prove to be a valuable guide for our Member

of actions they may like to get involved in, be they events, campaigns, projects or reports. To
optimise our mutual internal planning, around the summer we will ask all our members to
indicate in what campaigns and activities they intend to participate.

The Farm Animal Working Group is supportive of the work carried out so far in spite of a

welfare of laying hens in cage-free systems and dairy cattle from birth to death (calves
