Gun Dog Class Dogs Gun Dog Class Bitches
A class for Dogs and a class for Bitches that have an AKC hunting title; an IWSCA gun dog title (i.e. WC,
WC, WD, WDX); and/or an AKC field trial title or field trial Judge’s Award of Merit. Sexes divided. Dogs
and Bitches entered in Gun Dog class must be intact.
Winners of the above non-regular classes, if otherwise undefeated,
are eligible to compete in Best of Breed Competition
                                     BEST OF BREED COMPETITION
The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed Competition: Dogs
that are Champions of Record and dogs which according to their owner’s records, have com-
pleted the requirements for a Championship, but whose Championships are unconfirmed. The
showing of dogs whose Championships are unconfirmed is limited to a period of 90 days from
the date of the show where a dog completed the requirements for a Championship according
to the owner’s records.

NATIONAL ONLY – Best from the Bred By Exhibitor Classes
Best Veteran Dog • Best Veteran Bitch
AWARDS OF MERIT (BOTH EVENTS) – The Irish Water Spaiel Club of America offers Awards of Merit
at its Regional and National Specialty Shows in recognition of the quality dogs that are in serious
contention for the top breed awards. It is entirely the judge’s decision whether to give all of the
Awards of Merit, only some, or none. The number of awards that may be made is determined by the
size of the entry based on the number of dogs competing in the Best of Breed ring including entered
Champions of record, any move-ups, Veteran Dogs, Veteran Bitches, Winners Dog and Winners Bitch
x 10% rounded up, with no consideration as to sex. AOMs should not be confused with Select Dog
and Select Bitch which are AKC awards toward Grand Championship status and are to be awarded per
AKC rules. Awards of merit exclude the winners of Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of
Breed, Select Dog, Select Bitch, and Best of Winners that, by virtue of their placements have already
been recognized.
BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR COMPETITION (NATIONAL ONLY) – Best Bred by Exhibitor will
be awarded from the First Place winners in the REGULAR BRED BY EXHIBITOR CLASSES ONLY
immediately following the breed judging. If the Best of Breed is awarded to a dog/bitch coming from
one of the Bred by Exhibitor Classes, the Best Bred by Exhibitor win is automatic.
BEST VETERAN DOG/BITCH COMPETITION (NATIONAL ONLY) – Best Veteran Dog and Best
Veteran Bitch will be awarded from the First Place winners in the various VETERANS CLASS AGE
GROUPS ONLY immediately following the breed judging.

                                                                                        IWSCA 2019 • 5

NON-REGULAR CLASSES INVOLVING MULTIPLE DOG ENTRIES (NATIONAL ONLY)
NOTE: As the judge’s decision in the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch Classes is based on the merits of more
than one dog/bitch, no one of the dogs/bitches making up the entry judged first in these classes will
be eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class.
STUD DOG CLASS: For Stud Dogs and two of their get. Stud Dogs must be entered in the Stud Dog
Class and must be shown in the ring with their Get. The owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily
be owner of the Get. While the merits of the Stud Dog are not to be considered in the placement
of the entry, the Stud Dog must be examined to determine if it has a condition that would require
its disqualification or excusal under the Dog Show Rules, AKC policy, or the standard for its breed.
Get must be entered in a regular class, Best of Breed competition, or some other non-regular class.
BROOD BITCH CLASS: For Brood Bitches and two of their Produce. (Rules above apply - substitute
Brood Bitch for Stud Dog and Produce for Get.)
BRACE CLASS: Two dogs that are similar in appearance, performing in unison, and presented by a
maximum of two handlers. Both dogs competing in brace competition must have at least one com-
mon owner. The Dogs comprising a Brace MUST be named at the time of entry. In making entries for
“Brace Class Only” full particulars MUST be given for each dog on individual entry forms. An entry
form for a dog entered in a Regular Class or for “Best of Breed Competition” and entered as part of
a Brace MUST be marked accordingly in the space provided for Additional Classes, “Brace Class.” If
more than one Brace is entered by same owner, dogs comprising EACH BRACE must be designated
“Brace No. 1,” Brace No. 2,” etc.
EXTENDED GENERATIONS CLASS: This class will be judged following Stud Dog and Brood Bitch. The
entries in this Non-Regular Class represents three generations of an Irish Water Spaniel pedigree in
each “Entry,” exhibited from the oldest to the youngest. The Class is judged much like the Stud Dog
or Brood Bitch Classes, but the difference is that in each of those classes, only the offspring are to
be judged. In the Extended Generations Class, each entry is judged on the merits of all three of the
dogs (Example: dog, sire, grandsire). Entries in this class need not all be of the same sex. A separate
entry form must be submitted for each dog. Each Dog comprising each Generations entry MUST be
designated at time of enty. If entering online, this can be done via email to the BaRay Events office.

with competition would count as one win towards moving to Open at a licensed or member show.
OPEN CLASS: For boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the
show, and who have won three first place awards in a Novice Class or if a win in Novice leads to a
Best Junior with competition present it will count as one win towards moving to Open in a licensed
or member show. Juniors which according to their records have completed the requirements to
compete in the Open class but whose status is unconfirmed by the American Kennel Club are
limited to competing in the Open Class for a period of 90 days from the date of the show where
the Junior completed the requirements according to their records.
MASTER CLASS: This class will be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years on
the day of the show, and who have 10 Best Junior wins with competition. The calendar for this class
will be consistent with the eligibility dates for the AKC National Championship. All Juniors meeting
the criteria for this class are required to enter the Master Class and may change their entry the day
of the show if entries have already closed. Once the eligibility time frame for that year has passed
all participants return to the Open Class to compete for the following year.
After the judge has awarded the Best Junior Handler, the second place winner from the class that
the Junior was awarded Best Junior Handler is to return to the ring to compete for Reserve Best
    Junior Handler.

AKC Code of Sportsmanship
PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of
AKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsman-
ship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and com-
panion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our
sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to
periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.

• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous
competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.
• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of
purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or
 behavior.

• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other
  factors.

• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.
• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might
reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other than
  the merits of the dogs.

• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.
• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the
  sport of purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to
appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.

• Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.

• Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.
• Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and
  weaknesses of their breeding stock.
• Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or
  bestowed upon them.

• Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.

• Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the
American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking
  part in the sport.
EXHIBITORS PLEASE NOTE
If it is necessary to rescue a dog from a parked vehicle on the show grounds or in the parking
area, the club will not be responsible or liable for any damage to the vehicle involved.
