3rd February 2017!

This week a group of our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 dance students took part in the largest national
dance competition open exclusively to schools. The vision of the competition is to create an exciting
competition bringing together children of all ages and abilities where the emphasis is on having a good time.
Well, our girls certainly did that.

BBG Academy’s KS3 entry was a contemporary piece which was choreographed for a performance evening
about war and peace. The dance idea comes from the current issues of child refugees in Syria and focused
 on communicating different relationships.

BBG Academy’s KS4 entry was another contemporary piece that was collaboratively choreographed by the
students and teacher. The dance idea was based around negative body image with movement material
inspired by the lyrics from the song ‘Body Love’ by Mary Lambert. The Key Stage 4 piece was a very moving
tribute to Ellie Bramham. The girls were a credit to the academy.

Well done to all students involved, a fantastic achievement:
Year 7 - Ellie Needham, Aime Hall, Rebecca Wood, Olivia Jones, Summer Hayes, Ellie Ball, Zoe Cole, Jena
Clough, Emma Maleham, Ella Fahy, Evie Morley, Alarna Hamilton, Ebony Ramm
Year 8 - Paige Evans, Brooke Shaw
Year 9 - Georgia Quinlan, Beth Maleham, Ruby Fletcher, Melissa Gray, Amelia Scully
Year 10 - Elizabeth Pickett, Ellie Tutt, Gabi Hanson, Charlotte Palmer, Ella Mackowski

The imagination displayed by Year 7 has been fabulous to
see. They have really embraced the challenge of creating a
resilient superhero. Next step is to develop their literacy skills
by creating a story about their characters.

  Our School ‘Book Fair’
will take place 6 – 8 February, in the LRC.
Students can call in before school or after
school, from 2:30 onwards, on Wednesday
and Thursday. Your support would be

school library. Last year, the school was
able to obtain books to the value of £300.

                           There will be a wide

Year 9 have been taking part in assessed performances in music and drama this week. In
music the students have been working on chords and riffs, and performed Five Years Time by
Noah and the Whale. In drama the students have been learning about Theatre in Education,
which is a method of teaching using performance which was developed in the 1960s at the
Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Their performances were aimed at educating an audience of 10
and 11 year olds about being safe on the roads.

MATHS!
We are pleased to announce that almost 100 students from the top maths sets in Years 9, 10 and 11 have all
experienced exciting maths with the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge. They sat the
challenge on Thursday 2 February 2017 and will find out their results in a few weeks’ time.

The UKMT Individual Maths Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are
designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of students. The three levels cover the secondary
school range 11-18 and together they attract over 600,000 entries from over 4,000 schools and colleges.
The papers contain 25 multiple choice questions. Of these, the first 15 are more accessible, whilst the final
10 will provide more food for thought. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to 40% of participants
nationally in the Junior and Intermediate Challenges, and 60% of participants nationally in the Senior
Challenge. The most successful participants at each level are invited to enter follow-on rounds; Kangaroos
(multiple choice questions) or Olympiads requiring full written answers.
An example of a question: Why not give it a go?

parent information!
YOU SAID, WE DID POLITE REQUEST
At our recent Year 9 parents evening you kindly
gave us feedback. Thank you for both the positive
comments and the improvements you would like to
see. As a result of your feedback we are in the
process of making some changes.
ü Some of you were worried that homework was
not given every day in every subject – we are
researching the effects of homework before
issuing, however we will provide you with the
programme of study titles so you can study at
home with your child if you chose to.
ü Some of you would like our PD system to be
relaxed. Apologies but the PD system is built
upon traditional values of discipline, behaviour
and respect and is sacrosanct. We will continue
to apply it consistently so your children can learn
in the very best climate for learning.
ü Some of you were concerned about staff
absence in English. Staff sickness, unfortunately, We have had an email from a local resident who is
is unavoidable. Please be assured that a short very concerned about the number of cars turning into

requested more information. This has been put in park and drive considerately in the area and with due
place with immediate effect. regard for the safety of other drivers and pedestrians.
ü Some of you felt communication was not as Due to a lack of space, and safety of our students
good as it could be. This year we have please do not drive into the Academy grounds unless

communication within 24 hours; if you do not
have access to any of the above please let us
know and we will try to support in other ways.
ü You wanted holiday fines to be removed. We
remain committed to your children's education
and therefore do not intend to relax the
   expectations around attendance. Please be
assured teachers are not permitted to take
   holidays in term time either.
ü We fielded many conversations on the evening
   around assessment and the increased
expectation due to the national curriculum
reform. Further information will be given at
options evening on Wednesday 15 February

NETBALL

Another success for BBG Netball this week with two wins for the Year 7 A and B teams against
Heckmondwike. The A played the first match and got off to a flying start with a 5 goal lead. Heckmondwike
managed to come back with a couple of goals before half time, but despite countless interceptions from
centre, Summer Haynes kept them at bay. The second half got off to a slower start but with a second wind
BBG finished in style 11-4. The second game was a close match between BBG B team and Heckmondwike,
with only one goal scored throughout. It was an evenly matched game with the girls working tirelessly to
keep the opposition from scoring and relentlessly transitioning from attack to defence. The girls showed
great resilience by maintaining their 1-0 lead in the second half. Well done and keep up the hard work!

                    REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS
We are delighted to share the fantastic news that seven of our students have been selected to represent
