2 We are pleased to be celebrating our 35th year of the Vancouver Sun Run. Since 1985 more than one million registrants have signed up for this iconic race. Participants of all ages and skill levels have enjoyed running this race over the years and we look forward to many more to come. No matter what your running ability, it is always inspiring to see the joy on faces when they beat a personal best or simply cross the finish line with a smile.

It’s a wonderful feeling and it’s what the Vancouver Sun Run has been about year after year – helping each participant achieve their personal goals.

The Vancouver Sun Run is about health, fitness and community spirit, as well as a great way to showcase our beautiful city. Together we make up Canada’s largest 10K and one of the largest 10K’s in North America. It’s an incredible achievement that we can all be proud of. On behalf of the organizers, the steering committee and all of us here at the Vancouver Sun, we would like to thank all of you – the participants, the volunteers, the sponsors and cheering squads along the route -- for your overwhelming support over the past 35 years. Thank you for helping us get to the finish line.

On Sunday, April 14, 2019, from start to finish, let’s make this year’s run one for the ages.

4 MISSION STATEMENT To be Canada’s leading and most influential 10K race inspiring healthy, active lifestyles for people of all ages and at any fitness level year over year by offering a fun and accessible community-based running/walking event and training clinics. WHAT The 35th Vancouver Sun Run Presented by Ford is Canada’s largest and most beautiful 10-kilometre road race. The run is open to international elite competitors, recreational runners, joggers and walkers, wheelchair competitors, teams, schools, and children. The Vancouver Sun Run is the 3rd largest timed 10K in North America.

WHEN Sunday, April 14, 2019 Time: 9:00 a.m.

WHERE Vancouver Sun Runners start on Georgia Street and head west, turn left onto Denman and immediately right onto Robson to start their exodus from the downtown core. They cut through Stanley Park on Lagoon Drive (past the pitch and putt), turning onto Park Drive and exit the park on to Beach Avenue. They continue on Beach Avenue along the shoreline of English Bay to Hornby Street. Here they take a left-hand turn and tackle the only steep uphill to Pacific and go immediately left again to start crossing the Burrard Street Bridge. They exit on 2nd Avenue, wind their way to Fir Street to join 4th Avenue, and continue heading east on 6th Avenue to the Cambie Street Bridge, for the final stretch across the bridge to the finish line at BC Place Stadium.

See pages 8 & 9 for Course Map.

WHY The Vancouver Sun Run’s primary mandate is to promote health, fitness and community spirit and to support amateur athletics through the Vancouver Sun International Track Classic via the Achilles Track Society. The Vancouver Sun Run also supports children and family literacy through the Raise-A-Reader Campaign. While the Vancouver Sun Run is not designated as a charity event, close to $2.625 million in proceeds have been donated to important causes since 1985. VANCOUVER SUN RUN CHARITY INITIATIVE! The Vancouver Sun Run offers even more ways to make a difference. Every registrant has the opportunity to make a direct donation to a charity or create a personal pledge page for one of the Vancouver Sun Run’s charitable partners and to fundraise through participation in the Vancouver Sun Run.

This year’s charitable partners are BC Children’s Hospital, BC SPCA, BC Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House of British Columbia Duke of Edinburgh Int’l Award and Variety - Children’s Charity. Any money personally raised using the runner’s pledge page will go directly to the selected charity. How? Visit vancouversunrun.com, simply follow the links on the registration page to learn more, set up your pledge page and then be off and running for the cause of your choice!

RACE DAY INFORMATION GETTING TO THE START LINE Take transit. Translink, including SkyTrain, SeaBus and certain bus routes, opens early on race day. Call 604-953-3333 or visit www.translink.ca for details. If you take SkyTrain, RED, PURPLE, WHITE BIBS: exit at Granville Station. YELLOW, BLUE, BLACK, GREEN BIBS: exit at Burrard Station. Stadium station is closest to the finish area. To avoid line ups, pre-pay your fare with FareCards or FareSavers, visit translink.ca for more information. If you must drive, be forewarned that street closures in the start and finish areas begin at 5:00 a.m. There are plenty of pay parking lots in the downtown core.

Look for parking near BC Place Stadium and jog to the start zone. MEETING FRIENDS AT THE START Plan to meet your friends before the race at a landmark outside the start zone. Try the Vancouver Public Library, Canada Post building or Waterfront Station. Avoid landmarks within the start zone, such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, Hyatt Regency, Hotel Vancouver, as they will be awash in Sun Runners.

GEAR CHECK Transport your warm, dry clothes from the start to the finish zone for just $5. Pay at the Purolator gear check trucks, located at start zone access streets, before 8:30 a.m. on race morning. A Walker’s only gear check is open on Howe St. until 9:30 a.m. The 2.5K Shaw Mini Sun Runners have their own gear check near the Shaw Mini Sun Run start line at Pacific Blvd. Use the perforated gear check tag on your race bib to identify your gear; volunteers will be on hand to provide a plastic bag for your items. Gear must be picked up at South East of the Finish line across from Rogers arena in the Concord Pacific Parking lot near the finish line by 1 p.m.

Show your race number to claim your gear. Do not check valuables. The Vancouver Sun Run is not responsible for lost or stolen items. RACE START Participants are grouped into waves according to their estimated finish time. Waves will start at timed intervals. The competitive wheelchair division starts at 8:40 a.m.; the Icebreaker Invitational Women’s Elite race starts at 8:50 am and the Men’s Elite starts at 9:00 am. Please be patient while the groups ahead of you begin the race. Assemble behind the balloon arch that matches the colour of your race bib. See page 12 & 13 for Corral closing times and colored bib start times.

Starting positions are on a first-come, first-serve basis within each zone. The MyTag timing system times you when you cross the start and finish lines. For the safety of all participants including children, entrants with strollers, walking poles, baby joggers and assisted wheelchairs MUST start in the Red Zone and must walk the route, regardless of ability.

GIVE YOUR SHOES ANOTHER FINISH LINE Support those in need and donate your pre-loved shoes. Running, athletic, dress/work shoes and hiking boots are collected, washed and distributed through the ShoeRenu Foot Care Clinics at the Salvation Army Harbour Light in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Vancouver Quadra. For a list of Sun Run Stores, visit www.sunrunstores.com. 14 RESULTS Complete finish results, including your name, finish time and placement, will be published in the Vancouver Sun on Monday, April 15. Team Division results will also be published in that issue, space permitting. Results will also be posted at www.vancouversunrun.com.

Awards will be mailed to the top three finishers in 16 age categories. TIMING You will be timed using the MyLaps Bib Tag Timing System. This device will be attached to the back of your race bib and will record your start and finish times and provide you with accurate net results. Your time starts when you cross the start line. Do not remove it. Your race number must be worn on the front of your shirt for the event. NO DEVICE, NO RESULTS. YOU MUST CROSS BOTH THE START AND THE FINISH LINES TO RECEIVE A FINISH TIME. Device is coded and non-transferable, please DO NOT switch bibs. The timing device and race number is yours to keep as a souvenir after the event.

CHECK YOUR BIB You will pick up and verify your Bib Tag at Race Package Pickup. Go to the Solutions Desk inside BC Place Stadium during the Vancouver Sun Run Fair if there are any discrepancies with your race bib. Timing devices cannot be replaced or exchanged on race day.

LOST CHILDREN Complete the form on the back of your child’s Shaw Mini Sun Run race number bib, including a race day contact phone number. Lost children will be brought to the event information booths inside BC Place Stadium and cared for in a secure area until they can be reunited with their families. Advise your child(ren) if they become separated from you during the run to look for the Communications Crew that line the route, Medical Crew (red t-shirts) or the Pacific Blue Cross Volunteer Crew (blue t-shirts). They will bring lost children to the event information booths. POST-RACE PARTY Bagels, fruit, Oasis Juice, Herbaland Naturals, HelloFresh and plenty of Canadian Springs water will be available.

Enjoy The Neurotics performing at the Yaletown Party Main Stage or take the kids to the Shaw Mini Sun Run kids zone. 15 RACE DAY INFORMATION

36 • Read the website, entry form or other race information. All of the race details you need are probably there. Pay particular attention to deadlines –these help race officials and volunteers to better prepare for race day. • Pay attention to packet pickup hours. Race packets/ numbers are not available outside hese guidelines. • Carefully check your personal information at packet pickup as it is printed on your number. Before the race is the only time to correct any errors such as age, gender, or misspelling of your name. Corrections are made by visiting the race solutions desk before you leave The Sun Run Fair.

• Pin your number on the FRONT of your shirt or outermost clothing and keep it visible at all times, and especially at the finish. DO NOT COVER YOUR RACE NUMBER WITH ANY CLOTHING or you will not receive a race time, as the number contains your timing tag. Announcers, photographers, timers and medics use it to help identify you.

• Do not run without a number, or run if you did not register. Doing so can cause errors in the recording of times and positions of those legitimately entered. People who do so are called ‘bandits’ or ‘turkeys’, and may be refused entry into other races. • Do not allow another runner to use your number. A person running in your place who is of a different gender or a different age group can lead to errors in the results, and deny legitimate winners of their prizes. Also, in the event of an accident or medical condition, wrong information may have serious consequences. Respect the event’s policy on transferring entries.

• Stick to the color zone and wave start time that you have been assigned. Do not start the race before your assigned wave start time so as not to impede quicker participants. • Don’t block other runners at any time. Slower runners or walkers must remain on the right side of the road to allow quicker runners to pass on the left. At aid stations, move to the side if you slow down or stop. • If you need to walk or slow abruptly during the race, move to the side of the road first. If you must leave the course, be sure to return to it at the same point as you left it. • Remember there are other people in the race, be courteous and allow them to have the same experience that you expect.

Think of others.

• Do not stop right at the finish line. Keep moving through the finish area so that others can finish behind you. • Exit the finish area as soon as possible, to reduce congestion in the area. • Be courteous to the volunteers, smile and give them a big thank you as you run by. You have an event to run because of them. Smile!....and have fun!
