Kia ora koutou, dear Parents, Whānau, and Friends,
After a few years of inclement weather we decided to shift this
year’s edition of Te Wiki o Te Mahi Tahi to early on in term 2, and we
were rewarded with settled weather last week. Once again TWOTMT
was a great success. The workshops went smoothly and the school
enjoyed a brief presentation of some of the outcomes on Friday. There
was such a wide range of activities, from making friendship bracelets to
gymnastics, from bee keeping to pastel drawing and many, many
more, that these presentations will continue on into the next few
Monday assemblies. We are deeply grateful to all the adults who held
workshops, and gifted some wonderful skills and experiences to our
tamariki. Imagine walking around the school when the workshops are
happening: you will come across children building and lighting fires,
using sharp knives to whittle pointy sticks, splitting wood with small
and large axes, climbing tall-ish trees using self-made rope ladders,
stoking the fire in the pizza oven, marching off into the bush with large
loppers and hatchets, smoking out bee hives, tumbling over gym
apparatus and learning to ride unicycles twice as high as they are…and
with all this there are only two or three very minor injuries, perhaps
where someone touched a hot tray. Quite amazing really, and it is
because of the teachers and instructors who teach the children so well,
and to the children who really step up to accept their personal
responsibility in this setting.
All the classes who participated (2-7) are this week using TWOTMT as
an authentic context for writing, and we look forward to publishing a
small compendium of this work to share with you.
This week we welcomed the Luketina Velagapudi whānau to Te Rā
and Te Rawhiti. Viktor joined Class 1 and Angelika is coming to the
kindergarten. Nau mai haere mai. Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa,
Natalie, Sasanka, Viktor and Angelika.
Teachers’ strike 29 May: while there is still a slight chance that
the parties return to facilitated talks, the strike is very likely to go
ahead. The Board of Trustees will provide detailed information following
deliberations at tonight’s meeting. However, we wanted to give you a
heads-up about a likely school closure on that day.
Please note that the kindergartens will not be affected by the strike and
will be open as usual.
Noho ora mai,
Andrea Sorger
Tumuaki / Principal

                      From the Board of Trustees

2019 Board of Trustee Parent Elections
Tēnā koutou katoa, by now all eligible parents should have received
information and nomination forms about the upcoming Board of
Trustee Parent Elections. The Board of Trustees and its members
play an important role in the governance of our school. Please
consider nominating yourself or someone else who you think may be
willing and available to contribute to the ongoing growth of our
school.

Tax Donation Receipts
All tax donation receipts were sent out yesterday. Most of you will
have received two receipts. One for pledge donations and one for
disbursement donations. If you have any queries, please send me
an email and we can look into that for you.

Previous queries for past year tax receipts will be dealt with in the
next few weeks as it takes a lot of time to find the information in the
old systems. Thank you for your patience.

Carpark
A few reminders about the carpark:
 If you are using the drop off lane, please do not then park up
and talk with a friend while in the lane. We have had a few
instances of this happening that this causes the drop off lane to
back up, and in a few instances, this has backed up out the
     gate.
 Please do not park on the pedestrian crossing.
 Please park considerately so that others can back out safely of
     their carpark.
 Please continue to use the paddock parking across the road for
overflow parking rather than parking on the road.
From the Office

Missing Library Books
A big thank you to Josie for completing a full audit of our school
library books last term (during the Harvest Fair time period).

Unfortunately we had over 342 books missing. Some have been
returned since but can everyone PLEASE check at home and return
any books with our school name on. This applies mainly to our
Class 4, 5, 6 and 7 children and to any past families.

We also have a small but recurring problem of our books being
returned in error to the public library and vice versa. Please take
extra care in the future.

Woodwork Room Drill has been misplaced
A black and yellow De Walt drill, with our Te Rā School name written
on it went missing from the Woodwork Room around the time of the
Harvest Fair. Please contact Paul or the office if you know of its
whereabouts.

Class 6 Rats are Needing a New Permanent Home
The two much loved Class 6 rats are now looking for a new
permanent home. They come complete with their cage and toys!
Please contact Paul or the school office if you would like them.

               Tuakana Teina Parenting Initiative

At one of the Wananga Hapori last year a really useful conversation
unfolded where the more experienced parents were able to describe
some successful strategies and give general insights into situations
that some of the less experienced parents were grappling with for
the first time.
There is a great wealth of parenting experience and expertise in our
school and kindergarten community, and we are exploring the
possibility of creating a forum where this sort of mentoring could
happen.
These are some of the scenarios that are leaving some of our newer
parents scratching their heads and looking for answers:
 Boundary pushing (bedtimes, mealtimes, clothing, behaviors
      continuing when asked to stop)
 Running away (from home or hiding from parents when asked
      to come)
    Tantrums
 Refusal to speak or move when it is time to go or participate in
     something, 'flopping'
 Screaming, yelling, demanding, answering back to parents,
     rudeness, swearing
 Interrupting when parents are speaking to other adults or
     children
 Hitting, kicking etc (parents and other children)
 Invading parents personal space at inappropriate times
 Healthy eating patterns (preventing over eating)- easy to
     prepare nutritious foods
 Frustration and offence over small bumps, injustices, lack of
desire to share or parental correction resulting in one or more
     of the above challenging behaviors
    Sharing attention with siblings
 How to help children understand their feelings and express
     them appropriately
 Wanting to wear the exact same clothes all the time
 How to talk to children about family challenges (parents in
hospital, job changes, sick grandparents etc.)
Sound familiar? Have you found a way to successfully deal with any
of these with your own child or children?
Let us know if you think you could offer some support. We are really
happy to help with the facilitation and coordination of suitable times,
but essentially we propose this to be parent-led, as a kind of
“Harmoney” of parenting support.
Send me a quick email or drop by if you are interested.

Opportunity For Students To Experience Another Culture At
Home, Practice Your Language Skills, Make New Friends And
Rediscover And Share The Beauty Of New Zealand
At the beginning of July we will be welcoming 20 exchange students
from France, Canada, Finland and Germany. Our new arrivals will
live with a host family and attend school for a semester or year. As
we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families
who might be interested to host a student.
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages.
To this end, we would be grateful if you would place a notice in your
newsletter or mention it on your website. You can download one of
our newsletter notices as an image either from here or here.

Welcoming an overseas exchange student into your home is a very
rewarding experience. Host families help provide students with the
chance to experience life in New Zealand. It’s a great way to
develop language skills, share your stories and establish a lifelong
link to a family overseas. Hosting a student also contributes to
international goodwill.

All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a
local school and live the life of a local. If families would like a
selection of student profiles sent to them to review and decide which
student may fit into a particular family best, please contact us or
reply to this email.
The Laver family had a wonderful time hosting their exchange
student from France, Zachary. This is what Host Mum Jo Laver
shared with us about their experience "Our 12 year old son was the
only one who was not keen at all. But now Zach is here, they get
along quite well, sharing games on ipods / iphones and hanging out
with friends. It has been great for him to have a ‘brother’. My 6 year
old girl who is always the life of the party keeps on hugging and
talking to poor Zach! Zach has taken everything in his stride and it
has been a great experience for all of us."
Check out what some of our families who have hosted have to say
about their experience by clicking here: host family testimonials.
We lead the way as the first secondary student exchange
organisation in the world to be certified to ISO 9001 (Quality
Management System) and we ensure the highest standards of care
and support to our participants.

If you have any questions about hosting an exchange student or
would like to view profiles of students arriving from other countries,
please respond to this email or call our office on 0800 440 079. Our
staff members will be happy to discuss which student might be best
suited to your family. No obligation.
