The Maine Avenue Revitalization Association (MARA)
                                       By Betty McMillen

The Maine Avenue Revitalization Association was founded in 1993 by Susan Manire and Betty
McMillen. Their goal was to fix up and clean up Lakeside's Historic Business District, along Maine
Avenue and side streets.

Since the beginning MARA has painted almost every building on Maine Avenue, hired artist David
Ybarra to paint historic murals and old fashion signage, they pushed along the undergrounding of
utilities which removed old telephone poles and wires and obtained new old fashion streetlights, they
hired Unuway (developmentally challenged adults) for weed abatement, sweep sidewalks, and empty
trash receptacles, which is an ongoing weekly job.

Last year MARA paid for the historic Lakeside Hotel (built in 1887) to be completely painted ...in
Victorian colors chosen by the new owners, and also a new hand painted sign.

How does MARA raise funds for the preservation projects? For 10 years they hosted the Lakeside
Street Dance, a very big hit in the community. These days they host a mega yard sale and they also
receive funds from Community Enhancement Grants with the help from Supervisor Dianne Jacob.
