It is with great sadness that The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary
Award acknowledges the death of our Founder HRH The
Duke of Edinburgh KG, KT.
Sixty-five years ago, His Royal Highness established The
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK. Since then, it has
been delivered in more than 130 countries and territories,
equipping and empowering millions of young people
to build the skills, confidence and resilience they need to
support their communities and be ready for the world.
On Saturday 10 April our second group of students left
from school to complete their practice tramp for the Bronze
award. At 7.00am it was raining, dark and the girls were keen
to get moving. Hearing of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death
seemed to make this tramp that little bit more meaningful.
We have had over 90 students complete both training and
practice tramps for their Bronze awards.
Year 13 Physical Education Symposium
On Thursday 8 April, the NCEA Level 3 Physical Education students from NGHS took part in
a symposium held at the EIT Institute of Sport and Health.
We attended this event along with Level 3 Physical Education students from various
different schools around Hawke’s Bay.
The symposium was held with the purpose of informing us about the different career
pathways that Physical Education can lead us to. The symposium also promoted the
importance of Health and Wellbeing through being physically active and helped us to build
on our knowledge to assist with our Level 3 Programme.
We were placed into groups with students from other schools and rotated around five
different stations. These stations were run by strength and conditioning coaches from the
Institute of Sport and Health, sports nutritionist - Marieke Flatt, and sports psychologist -
Edmond Otis. We were shown some of the possible and respected careers that stem from
physical education. As Hawke’s Bay has one of the country's best regional sports park
facilities, it was the perfect place to inspire and educate this group of Year 13 students.
Many of us left the day feeling encouraged by the range of opportunities that are available
to us just through studying Physical Education. All the speakers and coaches were helpful
in answering our questions. Therefore, this was a positive experience and we recommend
this for students studying NCEA Level 3 Physical Education in the future.

Pasifika
Last Thursday Pasifika student leaders

support in ensuring a bright future for
themselves and their communities.
Student leaders from NGHS included
Leila Iafeta, Chante Malu, Ella-Rose
Faletutulu and J'shaiah Lange Timoti.
They represented the school well and

INTERNATIONAL
Last week Napier Girls’ had a visit from Rick Yong, a Director of the Malaysian agency Selset Education
Centre. Rick has been based in Auckland with his family and was invited by Learning Hawke’s Bay to visit
our region. He was able to visit a number of Hawke's Bay schools and was most impressed with Napier
Girls' High School. Kate Tran and Mai Phan spoke to him about their experiences in New Zealand and
showed Rick around some of the classrooms. Thank you to all the teachers and students who made him
feel welcome.
Lilian Knorr leaves this term to go back to Hamburg, Germany. Lili extended her
stay in the Hawke’s Bay and has had some amazing experiences with her host
families. Lili has also been involved in hockey at a top level, sailing and visited
Wellington on a school trip. Lili enjoyed a South Island experience while in New
Zealand, visited the Taranaki District and kayaked down the Wanganui River.
