5President's Letter
Good Morning all!!
It sure does feel good “catching up” back issues and producing this great magazine once again. By the time this
article is printed, the 2021 DOY Trial will be in the books as we are looking back on DOY 2020.
I’d like to welcome into our organization, Elizabeth Larch. She is our new office assistant and has quickly pro-
vided much needed help to our office manager Kari Lindecamp. Please introduce yourself when you call the
office - -we are blessed to have them both!
There is a new slate of National Officers getting ready to take the helm and guide NSTRA - -Please welcome
the newly elected President Bill Sumpter, the 1st Vice President Marilyn Cunningham, and the Treasurer Rick
Manfredi.
It has been my pleasure to serve as your National President for the past three years. I have been fortunate to
meet and travel throughout the many NSTRA regions. Thank you for your collective support and hospitality
wherever I traveled. Thank you, too, for the service of Mikeal Mulberry in the capacity of 1st Vice President
for many thankless years. He is a leader and wise counsel for all things NSTRA!
I’m very glad this COVID stuff is in our rearview mirror. We should all continue to be respectful of each
other. If you choose to wear a mask, that’s fine. If you choose to not wear a mask, that’s ok too. This past 12-18
months have been very trying times for all of us. But we will all survive and do well.
Recently, I was notified by Mr. Todd Kellum, United Kennel Club representative, that UKC purchased the
American Field Publishing Company in Chicago, IL. Mr. Kellum was very excited and said that this would be
very helpful for NSTRA in the future. It sure sounds good, we’ll see how it develops.
Well, I’ve rattled on long enough. Talk to your neighbor/friend about joining the best birddog organization in
the country. Sign them up, mentor them, we’ll all benefit together.
See ya down the road,

92020 DOG OF THE YEAR
By: Debi Heaton, Trial Coordinator
The Dog of the Year (October 28 – October 31) is a continuation of the regional elimination trials. This year was
totally different because some regions had to cancel their regionals because of Covid19 and others postponed theirs
until a few weeks before the DOY championship. Covid19 did not slow down the number of entries and the need for
a dog competition with an outstanding finish.
Twenty-three regions were represented with 190 dogs running in three fields. There were 63 English Setters, 61
German Shorthairs, 38 English Pointers, 22 Brittanys, 5 German Wirehairs, and 1 Vizsla.
With Covid19, only one meal was provided to participants on Thursday evening which was a chicken and catfish
buffet preceding the annual awards ceremony. Nance Ceccarelli was the chairman for the trial with assistance from
JR Coke as co-chair and the president of the Conservation Bird Dog Club who hosted the event.
The officials:Left to right Jim Wall (UT) judge, Bodie Ray (GA) judge, Joel Cartwright (BSR) bird planter, Ron Becker (IL) field mar-
shal, Michael Wayne (IN) bird planter, Stan Perdue (GA), Lori Sprick (IL) field marshal, Dan Seliger (BSR) judge, Jerry Youmans (NW)
judge, Joe Dunigan (IN) field marshal, and Bob McCandless (KY) judge.
A BIG thank you to the Conservation Bird Dog Club for preparing the fields and clubhouse for this event. Roger
Parient also deserves a thank you for keeping up with all the parking spots as well as riding the tractor making paths
through the field. Also, another BIG thank you to Annette Armand and Ron Weaver for taking pictures at the event.
A picture really is worth a thousand words.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the top 16 dogs were taken from each field to advance to round 2. In round 2, the
top 12 dogs from each field advanced to round 3 on Saturday. In round 3, the top 4 dogs advanced to round 4. In
round 4, the top 2 dogs advance and the competition moved to field A for round 5 where the top 2 dogs advanced to
the final hour.
Wednesday, the trial was blessed with a high of 52 degrees and no rain, but that did not last. Thursday, it was 50
degrees and Amo got about 1 inch of rain. Friday and Saturday were dry with cool temperatures.
On Wednesday, A field started with field marshal Joe Dunigan (IN), judges Bob McCandless (KY) and Jerry You-
mans (MW), and bird planter Michael Wayne (IN). Red text indicates placements & blue identifies the other dogs
that advanced.
