Story of the Award
The brief given to Daniel Gill of Willow Woodworks this year was to design and make a trophy that
celebrates the success achieved by students in the technology suite of subjects recognised at the
awards ceremony, while also reflecting the wood technology background of our association.
The presentation of a scroll upon achievement has been a long-standing tradition. We have
attempted to carry this tradition while also recognising the significant achievement by each student
in the subjects focused upon today. The final design brings together the academic and practical
excellence that students have achieved through this uniquely
designed trophy. The laser engraved inscription on the
trophies has been individually produced for each candidate,
which also reflects the modern developments that are now
integrated into technology education.

TechnoTeachers Association | National Student Awards 2018 1A word of welcome from our Chairperson On behalf of the TechnoTeachers Association I extend a warm welcome to this year’s award-winning students, their families, teachers and school representatives. Welcome to Galway and the GMIT Campus on this proud day in your academic journey. We are extremely grateful to GMIT for their ongoing commitment to our awards ceremony. This is the 8th year that GMIT has hosted our annual awards and we thank especially Dr. Michael Hannon, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registrar, for his continued assistance, for placing the College facilities at our disposal and for agreeing to present awards. I welcome Minister John Halligan TD, who is Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development. We are delighted you could be with us today and greatly appreciate your support as we prepare to honour our most meritorious students. Xtratherm have been a great friend to the association for a number of years now and I would like to thank them for their involvement with our National Conference last October and welcome their representative Mr Ray Madden here today. The TechnoTeachers Association is delighted to have an ongoing partnership with the Construction Industry Federation. Mr Tom Parlon, Director General of CIF and Mr Dermot Carey are very welcome to our ceremony. We also welcome industry leaders John Sisk & Son Ltd who are sponsoring the Junior Certificate, Materials Technology Wood awards. The State Examination Commission plays a vital role in these awards. It is the SEC who provides the information which allows us to honour you, our outstanding students and we very much appreciate their contribution to today’s recognition of student success. Sadly during 2016, the TTA lost one of our longest serving and valued members. As recognition of his contribution to TTA we decided to name an Award in his honour. I’m delighted to welcome members of the Hayes family to present the “Martin Hayes Award” to the student who received first place in Construction Studies, Higher Level. In honouring your achievements, we also recognise the excellent work of your teachers who have guided you to such success. It is a proud occasion in a teacher’s career when one of their students is acknowledged as the best in the country in their subject area. As a subject association we represent teachers of the technological suite of subjects. I would like to thank the National Executive of the TTA whose dedicated work has made such a day of recognition possible. It is my privilege to be associated with such a dedicated and willing group of educators. Today’s awards celebrate and reward exceptional achievement across a broad range of skills represented by the work produced by you our outstanding students. You have demonstrated the highest levels of analytical thinking, creative design, manufacturing skills and intellectual reasoning. In a fast-paced world which values adaptability and innovation, you are ideally placed to succeed. In being recognised as the best, you honour yourselves, your families and your schools. I wish you continued success in your future careers and studies. Stephen O Brien Chairperson of the TechnoTeachers Association TechnoTeachers Association | National Student Awards 2018 2
Minister John Halligan T.D. Minister for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development John Halligan is a native of Waterford city. A lifelong trade unionist and community activist, he worked with container freight company Bell Lines for several years before entering politics full-time. John was first elected to Waterford City Council in 1999 for the Workers’ Party. He subsequently ran as an Independent candidate in the 2009, topping the poll in his electoral area and, during that term, serving as Mayor of Waterford from 2009 to 2010. He was first elected to Dáil Eireann in 2011 as an Independent Deputy for the Waterford constituency and, since then, has been a member of a number of Committees including the Committee on Procedures and Privileges, Public Service and Oversight and European Union Affairs. John co-founded the Independent Alliance in January 2015 and the grouping of like-minded Independent politicians entered Government in May 2016, with John appointed Minister for Training, Skills and Innovation. His portfolio includes responsibility for Further Education, Apprenticeship and Training programmes, School Transport, Research in Higher Education and the Implementation of Ireland’s Horizon 2020 Programme for research, development, science and technology, as well as Ireland’s participation in the European Space Agency. Welcome from GMIT On behalf of GMIT I would like to congratulate all the award recipients here today. In doing so I also congratulate your teachers for the help and support you received throughout the examination year and let’s not forget the help and support you received from your parents and family. GMIT is a multi-campus, multi-discipline, multi-award-winning institute serving a diverse student body of approximately 7,000 students. It is a student-centred organisation with a primary focus on learning and teaching informed by research. It operates across a wide geographical area, with two campuses in Galway City (Dublin Road and the Centre for Creative Arts), Mayo (Castlebar), Letterfrack and Mountbellew. Transition has been a key theme for the Institute for a number of years, but the focus was primarily on ‘transition in’, particularly for first year students. There is increased evidence of a focus on ‘transition out’ through the incorporation of modules such as ‘Next Step’ and the inclusion of work placements in programmes. Professional practice is becoming more dominant throughout the college, with professional practice in some guise increasingly incorporated into new programmes. I expect you will be interested in a beautiful book written by two of our staff members and now available in all good book shops. Wood, whether living trees or felled timber, is celebrated in ‘See The Wood From The Trees’, a new book by GMIT Letterfrack lecturers, Dr Marion McGarry and Dermot O’Donovan, which was formally launched by the Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Níall McNelis last November. The book, published by Artisan House, documents the story of trees felled by storms in Áras an Uachtaráin and subsequently gifted by the President, Michael D Higgins, to GMIT Letterfrack, the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design and Technology. The Letterfrack campus is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellent degree programmes in furniture design, wood technology and teacher education as well as the innovation and skills of its students, staff and graduates. Award-winning Artisan House has created a book that reflects the ethos of excellence and design while also acknowledging the dignity and status of Arás an Uachtaráin. All aspects of the publication, written text, photography, imagery, reproduction, design, binding and finishing, demonstrates the highest attention to detail. Even the paper used throughout is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification quality, obtained from a sustainable and ethical source. Further details on this excellent publication are available at this link: https://www.gmit.ie/news/mayor-galway-launch-see-wood-trees-gmit-lecturers-tues-27-nov With Best Wishes, Dr. Michael Hannon Vice President for Academic Affairs & Registrar GMIT TechnoTeachers Association | National Student Awards 2018 4
A note from the State Examination Commission On behalf of the State Examinations Commission (SEC) we heartily congratulate all the students receiving accolades at today’s awards ceremony. The SEC is a non- departmental public body under the aegis of the Department of Education and Skills and is responsible for the development, assessment, accreditation and certification of the Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations. The development of examination papers and other assessment components is a complex task, given that examinations must cater for candidates across the entire range of the ability spectrum. Examination components are carefully crafted to be accessible to all students, allowing everyone to demonstrate their true ability and attainment. Achieving full marks, or close to full marks in an examination subject is always a difficult task and it is particularly so in subjects where the examination comprises multiple components, each assessing a different skill set. This is undoubtedly the case in the Technological suite of subjects, where most examinations have both written/drawn and practical components and it is achieving success in all these components that makes the accomplishment of everyone receiving an award today so truly remarkable. Beyond the achievements in the State Examinations being celebrated today, it is also worth noting that the study of the Technological subjects does much to equip students with an invaluable set of transferable skills whether going on to further studies or to the world of work, as has been evidenced by many former students who, in past years, received similar awards to those being presented today. The Technological subjects provide a synthesis of theory, applied theory and practice which develops understanding, independent learning, and a broad range of capabilities in research, design, problem solving, time and resource management, computer skills, presentation techniques and materials processing to a very high level. Also noteworthy is the fact that the teachers of these subjects are at the forefront in the use and integration of ICT in the classroom to share, extend and deepen the range of educational experiences and outcomes available to students. Of course, in all the celebrations, we must not forget your parents, your teachers and your schools who individually and collectively have contributed to your achievements and we are sure that they are all incredibly proud of you today. The Chief Examiners of the Technological subjects in the SEC, taught your subjects for many years and indeed all served as members of the National Executive of the TechnoTeachers Association in the past. This year we say farewell to our colleague Sean O’ Broin who was Chief Examiner of Construction Studies for over twenty years and in recent years was Assistant Head of the Examinations and Assessment Division in the SEC. We acknowledge the enormous contribution Sean made to educational developments over the years and wish him well in his retirement. We wish to welcome Liam Fallon who recently joined the SEC. Liam was a leading member of the support service, which provides professional development to teachers of the Technological subjects, before being appointed to his new position in the SEC. We wish him well in his role. Finally, we wish to acknowledge the sterling work of the TechnoTeachers Association in organising today’s awards ceremony and to extend our thanks to their numerous members who work for us as examiners during the summer period. Comhghairdeas arís le gach éinne. John Corcoran (Chief Examiner - Design and Communication Graphics) Liam Murphy (Chief Examiner – Technology LC, JC and LCA, Technical Graphics) Liam Fallon (Chief Examiner – Const. Studies, Materials Technology Wood and Graphics & Const. Studies) Sean O' Broin (Former Assistant Head SEC and Chief Examiner - Construction Studies) TechnoTeachers Association | National Student Awards 2018 5

TechnoTeachers Association | National Student Awards 2018 6The Martin Hayes Award.
Martin Hayes had been central to the TechnoTeachers Association almost from
its inception and served as national treasurer for thirty years even after his
teaching retirement.
Martin’s passing in 2016 has left a permanent legacy that will be fondly
remembered by all who knew, worked and encountered him.
In all his time involved, Martin was a steady calming voice when wisdom and
common sense were called for. As his daughter said at Martin’s funeral mass
“He was a man of very few words, but when he spoke, it was measured, it was
important and it always carried weight”. Throughout his long association with
the TechnoTeachers, Martin did trojan work, organising, planning, managing
and attending countless meetings, awards and conferences. He was truly a remarkable administrator.
Martins working life began in Skibbereen Vocational School as a young Woodwork & Drawing teacher, straight
from training college in Gorey in September 1975. He remained a valued and popular member of staff until
his move to Schull Community College in 1983. Martin taught Woodwork, Technical Drawing and Construction
Studies there until his retirement in 2012.
Martin gave very generously with his free time and was involved with many local voluntary groups. He was an
active member of Schull Sailing School, Carbery Rangers GAA Club, Rosscarbery Community Council & the local
Tidy Towns Committee.
It is fitting then that we remember Martin again here today, in the presence of his family, when we present
an award with Martin’s name inscribed on it. The First Place Higher Level Construction Studies Award will be
known as the Martin Hayes Award and we feel that this is a fitting way of keeping Martins name coupled with
our association into the future.
