10 A regular in the New South Wales and Sydney Thunder line-ups, bowling all-rounder Nic Carey’s dream recently came true as the persistent 25-year-old made her Australian debut in what was a case of third time lucky. Carey’s love of cricket began at an early age as she battled away with her brothers in the backyard. She soon left the backyard for her local Kingsgrove Cricket Club, and thrived as the only girl in her teams throughout her junior career. Making her first representative team at age 12, Carey was a star from an early age, going on to represent New South Wales at the under-15 and under-18 level, before making her Women’s National Cricket League debut in 2010 at age 17.

After forging a solid career as a domestic cricketer, Carey was twice called into the Australia side but was unable to break into the team, instead having to wait until her third tour to make her long-awaited debut in India in March.

Now looking to cement her position in the Australian side, Carey reminisces on her pathway to the highest level and the importance of underage tournaments in her development as a player.

U15 FEMALE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018-19 | CRICKET AUSTRALIA How did you first get involved in cricket? I always used to muck around in the backyard playing with my brothers and I’d go to their games and quite enjoyed it. When I was about 10, my Mum suggested I sign up for the local team like my brothers, so I did and I haven’t looked back. Who was the first club you played for and what did you enjoy most about playing? I played for the Kingsgrove Cricket Club.

I loved turning up every Saturday to spend half the day having a good time with my friends. I played with the boys and was the only girl in the team, but they were great and I’m glad I got to play with them. At what age did you make your first representative team?

From memory I was about 12 when I made my first representative team at school through the NSW Primary School Sports Association. I didn’t really know much about representative cricket at that stage, but after I got a taste for it I wanted to keep making those kinds of teams whenever I could. With so many sports on offer what made you continue with cricket? I was definitely better at cricket than the other sports I tried so that helped! But in all seriousness, I’ve always enjoyed playing cricket. I’ve made some really good friends because of it and I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some pretty cool places, so it can be rewarding.

What are some of your fondest memories of playing for NSW? Probably the friends I’ve made over the years and the fact we’ve been fortunate enough to win a few titles along the way as well. Was there anyone you looked up to as a youngster that you ended up playing with? When I was younger I didn’t really know of any female cricketers, but when I got a bit older and was in the pathway teams we had Lisa Sthalekar around who used to be in charge of the pathway programs in NSW. Later on, I got to play for the Breakers with her which was pretty cool because she’s one of the best female cricketers we’ve had.

Are you still playing with anyone from your youth days?

I played underage cricket with Naomi Stalenberg and we now play in pretty much every team together, we even toured for Australia together earlier this year which was cool. There’s also girls who I play against in other states now that I came up against in underage carnivals, like Megan Schutt, who still has the same old strut! You’re a regular in the NSW and Sydney Thunder teams, how well did the underage pathways prepare you to play at that level? We’re really lucky in NSW that we have a strong pathway leading to the Breakers program and now the WBBL with the Sixers and Thunder. I found the pathway system really beneficial, because it’s structured to prepare you for when/if you transition into senior squads to make sure it’s not a massive shock.

You were part of the squad that won the recent World T20 in the West Indies, what was it like to be part of that? It was a pretty cool experience being away with the girls and winning a World T20 title. A lot of work goes into a tournament like that so it was nice to see it pay off. Being able to be part of such a successful tournament has definitely been a highlight of my career so far. PLAYERPATHWAY
