Each bag/bundle must weigh less than 20 kgs (44 pounds). Tie your brush into bundles no longer than 3ft, and with no material larger than 2” diameter. There is no limit to the number of paper leaf & yard waste bags or bundles of brush for collection.

Roll tops of the bag shut. Rolling the top sheds the rain and snow and prevents leaves from falling or blowing out. Only use paper yard waste bags. Paper yard waste bags are available at most local hardware stores and building centres.

Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Schedule Rules & Tips Northumberland County provides a monthly pick up of leaf & yard waste right at your curb on a routine schedule, from Mid-April to Mid-December.

Please have your brush, leaves and grass clippings out at the curb by no later than 7 a.m. on the MONDAY of your designated set-out week, not on your garbage/recycling collection day. It will be collected between Monday and Friday of your designated set-out week. Leaf and yard waste needs to be in kraft paper bags and brush needs to be bundled. Trees and limbs that exceed 3 feet in length and are greater than 2” in diameter, need to be disposed of at one of the County Waste Disposal Facilities (see back section of calendar for location details). Community Recycling Centres Northumberland County is in the process of redesigning the public drop off areas at its Brighton landfill and its Seymour and Bewdley transfer stations, and branding them as Community Recycling Centres.

This redesign is part of the County’s long term goal of reaching 75% waste diversion from landfill. Aside from the new names, and redesign, there are new recycling options at these locations, with more being developed. • Year-round hazardous and electronic waste drop off at the Brighton and Bewdley locations – begins April 2019!

Does not include meat trays, takeout containers, or packing peanuts. Beginning April, 2019, you will be able to drop-off household hazardous and electronic waste year-round at the Brighton and Bewdley Community Recycling Centres during operating hours.

The County will continue to offer depot drop-off days for household hazardous and electronic waste at the Seymour Community Recycling Centre and the Cobourg depot. See calendar for dates and times.

This is a welcome change and should eliminate the line ups that would occur during the seasonal depot operations. We anticipate that year-round access to household hazardous waste drop-off will ease congestion, and increase residents’ participation in the program. Please see the back of the calendar for information on hazardous and electronic waste. The Material Recovery Facility in Grafton is not a Community Recycling Centre, and is not a public drop off.

When the temperature drops below 0°C, bag tags become finicky and less sticky. Please affix the tag end-to-end on the neck of the bag. Help waste collectors do their job Please place your waste & recycling on the ground, near the curb and not on top of snow banks. Our drivers make over 1000 stops in a day and lifting items off snow banks is a safety risk and slows them down considerably.

Always have your waste to the curb by 7AM on your collection day. Green bin waste (e.g. food waste) and garbage will be collected by one “split truck.” A “split truck” is divided into two compartments.

Garbage will go in one compartment, and green bin material will go in the other compartment.

Recyclables now have their own “split truck” as well. Papers will go in one compartment, and containers will go in the other compartment. Garbage and Green Bin Set your garbage and green bin together on the right side of your driveway. Please note, you are allowed no more than two bags of garbage per week. Each bag must have a garbage bag tag affixed to it. Blue/Grey Box Set your blue box and grey box together beside your garbage and green bin. If you have large amounts of corrugated cardboard that will not fit in the grey box, please flatten and bundle this material and sit between the boxes.

All soft plastic bags must be in one soft plastic bag, tied at the top. This bag of bags can be placed in the blue box. Shredded paper must be in a clear bag, tied at the top, and placed in the grey box.

Garbage and how to set it out properly Why have we changed the program? Recycling Recycling has changed drastically since the program started in 1996.

Mixing all recyclables into a bag has become inefficient and costly. By keeping containers separate from papers at the curb, we will improve, not only efficiency, but the quality and quantity of materials to be recycled. Green bin Keeping organic material out of the garbage extends the life of our only landfill in Northumberland County. Instead of being landfilled, this material will be turned into a valuable resource such as compost. Garbage With 40% of a households waste capable of being removed from the garbage through our new green bin and recycling programs, two bags of garbage per week should be more than sufficient.

If not, residents can always visit a Community Recycling Centre to dispose of excess garbage By participating in these new waste programs, you are becoming part of the solution to reducing waste, saving landfill space, and recovering resources for future generations. You are now allowed up to two bags of garbage per week along with your green bin and recycling. Each bag of garbage can weigh no more than 20kgs (44lbs), and must have a bag tag affixed to each bag.

Here are some popular methods for lining your new kitchen-catcher: Line the kitchen catcher with newspaper.

When full, simply ball up the newspaper and put in the green bin.

You may also use certified compostable bags. When the bag is full, tie the top and put it in your green bin. NEVER use plastic bags, as they do not compost. Paper bags, such as those from the LCBO, also make excellent liners for kitchen catchers. You don’t need to use a liner at all. You can dump all your food waste in the green bin loose. However, you will need to clean the kitchen catcher and green bin regularly Other things to consider Meat scraps can create bad smells and pests, especially during warmer months. For this reason, keep a small paper or compostable bag in the freezer where you can keep meat scraps, bones, etc.

Blue/Grey Box tips Now that sorting is part of the weekly routine in recycling, below are some tips to keep in mind. Blue Box • Rinse your recyclables. Dirty plastic or glass containers do not get recycled. Rinsing is important! • Metal lids on glass jars should be removed, and put separately in the blue box.

• Do not crush cans or bottles. • Keep material loose. Do not bag materials. Grey Box • Flatten boxes. This saves a lot of space in the grey box! • Remove plastic sleeve from newspapers. Newspapers go in the grey box, and the sleeves goes in your bags of bags • Fold paper gift wrap to save space.

For safety reasons, we cannot empty gasoline into large drums and therefore, the container you bring it in cannot be returned to you. Oil needs to be in pails less than 5 gallons in size and we cannot accept oil in drums.
