Our Mission & Purpose

Welcome to Carcavelos!
Join us on this journey
to reach for a more
sustainable and clear
horizon.

The purpose of this guide is to lay the foundations for a sustainable way of living
at the new Carcavelos Campus – it is meant to be a powerful tool to raise awareness
amongst the Nova SBE community.

Our mission is to map the initiatives and processes taking place on campus while
providing a useful framework for an environmentally conscious behavior.

We regard this project as a constant work-in-progress that requires
the collaboration of all stakeholders in an effort to collectively ensure a mindful
transition towards a more responsible and wholesome institution – and yes,
we are counting on you too!

Goals & Milestones

Being fully aware that transitioning to a sustainable business school requires not
only individual efforts to change daily habits and decisions but also an institutional
engagement, Nova SBE devoted itself to address this issue and progressively
achieve its pioneering environmental goals and milestones.

By keeping our campus clean, we will generate savings which will be converted
into scholarships – more info on this to be communicated soon.

These are not just numbers, these are pledges to focus on what must be done
by the entire community.

Elementary, My Dear Watson!

We’ve come a long way, but there’s still much to be done. Small changes of habit
make a tremendous difference in inverting the negative trends that impact
the environmental situation of our planet.

Below you will find a summary of the fundamental information that this guide
provides. Meanwhile, always keep in mind the waste management hierarchy:

PREVENTION PREPARING RECYCLING RECOVERY DISPOSAL

If all higher education professors and students in Portugal used reusable water bottles instead of buying plastic
water bottles 3 times a week, over a year, circa 20686 barrels of crude oil would be saved, which amounts to the
production of 60.84 million plastic water bottles!

Nova SBE is working towards minimizing food waste by collecting all green waste from the food court restaurants and the coffee
grounds from the vending machines and using it for composting. The next step is to implement separate bins for organic waste.
The cooking oils that the restaurants on campus use will also be collected and recycled.

Quick tips:

• Remember to always carry a reusable bag,
like a tote bag for any unexpected last minute
 shopping;

• Set an alarm on your mobile phone for around
the time you leave home to remind yourself
 to pack your reusable bag, bottle, and snacks;

• Try to buy bulk-in instead of packaged goods;

• Prefer big packages instead of small.
They reduce plastic waste and usually save you
 some money.

Environmental Integrity

Sustainability cannot be achieved if people act irresponsibly and disregard their
relation with the environment. It is important to note that everyone is responsible
for the environment; everyone’s actions have repercussions that will inevitably
generate externalities for other members of society.

Take the opportunity and study near the beach to connect with the environment
and while you are at it help preserve such a beautiful place!

Saving the environment is
no simple task. The most
important thing is that we

will impact our daily lives. One has often to center or a landfill. Before

A great example is disposable plastic: it can take
tens or hundreds of years to decompose. Most of

Get Involved, Take Action!

Taking action is perhaps one of the most important ways to raise awareness
and influence the environment in a positive way.

There are several ways you can get involved in making Nova SBE a more

DO YOU HAVE INNOVATIVE WAYS TO MAKE NOVA SBE MORE SUSTAINABLE?
Reach out to the existing groups and see if you can cooperate:

• GreenNova: a students’ club that promotes sustainability and initiatives to raise awareness about
the state of the planet and the importance of following more green practices. It bridges the students’,
    faculty’s and staff’s concerns.

• Knowledge Center for Environmental Economics: a knowledge center whose speciality

There are several initiatives that could use a helping hand to improve the environment:
