Review of last Area Meeting Minutes
The collated minutes from the Spring Area Meetings are now available online. EC
responses to member queries can be found in the most recent copy of
Communication Matters

Are there any further comments from collated area meeting minutes and/or the new
format of feeding back via CM?

Giving Voice Aotearoa
Regular updates occur in Communication Matters
There are four Champions in main centres – Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch,
Dunedin.
We are always keen to welcome new people to get involved in assisting on working
parties or organising events or strategies in their own areas.

If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Dean Sutherland via the
details on the website.

                                                                                    1
The Giving Voice Week of Action will occur in September, but people can choose any
week to take action and spread campaign messages.

Tasks for meeting:
   ● Please discuss any awareness events or strategies you are using in your area
       and feed these back.
   ● Start to think about what events you would like to undertake for this year’s
week of action and any themes you would like to see included.

Northland
Themes for week of action:
   ● What does an SLT do? (people can’t ask for SLT if they don’t know what we
do, also covers adult and child populations)
   ● SLT allies/champions – certificates to recognise people within our workplaces
       and communities who support SLT

Other comments:
   ● Smaller posters would be easier
   ● Have a couple of different posters available for different populations
   ● Don’t find the postcards useful
   ● Stickers are good
   ● Try facebook ads/sponsored posts

Canterbury/Westland
Dean and the Canterbury team are meeting next week.
Future themes/ideas generated:
Play centres – help upskill the facilitators regarding language development and
strategies
Increase awareness in high schools of the profession
Schools in general – supporting teachers/teacher aids re: speech and language
development and strategies

Otago/Southland
Warren Cossou gave an update on local Giving Voice activities. Bridget McArthur has
met with a local councillor. Dean Sutherland came to Dunedin to attend the
Disability Matters Conference. There have been articles about SLT work in the Otago
Daily Times and Southland Times. Alison Zani has provided communication training
to Driving Miss Daisy staff. DHB SLTs have also provided communication training to
reception staff at Wakari Hospital.

One idea for Giving Voice work this year in Dunedin is to become the first
communication friendly city in New Zealand.

Waikato/BoP
Kath Phillips: we could contact news networks as they may be interested in what we
do.

                                                                                    2
Deborah McKellar: we would need to go through organisation communications
departments to do this – we now have some established contacts doing this at
Waikato Hospital after doing a stuff article during Awareness Week in 2017.
Biddy Robb: Will NZSTA supply posters this year?
Annabelle Hastings: No information provided yet but they usually provide some
resources.
Deborah McKellar: Request that NZSTA EC consider developing resources/posters
that cover a broader spectrum of age ranges. Last years posters were aimed at
adolescent age which is not usually applicable to DHB’s.
Biddy Robb: we could also get in touch with radio broadcasters.
Deborah McKellar: It could be good this year to come up with some broader ideas
that we can collaborate with across the region, rather than keeping it quite
organisation specific with our planning.
General Plan: teams to continue to brainstorm ideas within their organization and
keep in touch with AR around this.

Central
Hawkes Bay commented that they have not addressed this at at all; they would
love to be involved but have no time for it

Area Meetings
There was a great response to the member survey undertaken in 2017. There was a
great volume of information with regards Area meetings in terms of structure,
timing, feedback processes and information provided.

Over the coming year, there will be some changes to the area meetings based on the
feedback received. This will be a gradual process and we would value feedback over
the year as to what you would like to see change, be included or taken out of
meetings and also your opinions on the changes once they occur.

Task for meeting: discuss what you would specifically like to see changed or
included in area meetings. Could each area please prioritise no more than three
items.

Auckland - Query from several members (at and prior to the meeting) regarding
day/time of meetings being alternated to allow part time members to attend.
Suggestion from Fern Maxwell to alternate days, and particularly AM/PM timings

Northland - Members present felt that meetings were going well, and recognised
that it may be having a small membership that makes it easier during meetings.
Suggestion was made that it would be nice to have direct contact with an exec
member. Maybe once a year, one exec member could zoom into a meeting.

Cant/Westland - Would like to keep sharing and recording the PD events occurring in
Canterbury and feeding back on these.

                                                                                    3
To share current workplace initiatives and issues
To share a couple of tips from the area we are working in each meeting – to help
members learn/hear about other members areas of expertise.

Otago/Southland - Warren Cossou gave an update on local Giving Voice activities.
Bridget McArthur has met with a local councillor. Dean Sutherland came to Dunedin
to attend the Disability Matters Conference. There have been articles about SLT
work in the Otago Daily Times and Southland Times. Alison Zani has provided
communication training to Driving Miss Daisy staff. DHB SLTs have also provided
communication training to reception staff at Wakari Hospital.

One idea for Giving Voice work this year in Dunedin is to become the first
communication friendly city in New Zealand.

Waikato/BoP
General consensus was to continue having PD slot in meeting. Discussion held
around how area meeting times/days are selected.
Annabelle Hastings to email out all planned area meeting dates for 2018 to area
members.

Central
Area Rep will follow up with Jodi to find out about the timeline for disclosure of
survey results to members. There are some comments in Jodi’s update on p.18 of
the last Communication Matters that may be relevant.

Area Rep asked meeting attendees why they attend quarterly meetings, and what
would make quarterly meetings more valuable / useful

Main reasons given for attendance:
       - Points for CPD log
       - Networking and feeling connected to other SLTs

Reasons why area meetings are generally not useful:

-NZSTA updates are old news by the time the meeting comes round as the
same information comes out in NZSTA executive updates
       - Meetings are not particularly useful
-Agenda items don’t result in meaningful conversation

Things that members find most valuable about area meetings:

       - Learning / sharing about PD opportunities
       - Updates from other parts of the region
       - After-meeting chats in area hubs were reported to be the best bit of area
           meetings

Things members would like to see more of:

                                                                                     4
- More formalised reporting back / sharing about upcoming PD, PD
           attended, articles read, etc.
       - Getting to know area members better in terms of their job roles/areas of
expertise to allow members to feel more connected
       - Suggestion was made to host get-togethers in the different hub groups
across the region to get to know everybody better and to allow members
           to feel more connected.

Registration

The Registration opinion poll has now closed. The Executive Council will be
reviewing and communicating with SLTs across NZ very soon.

Task during meeting: No specific task

Northland - Member passed on their thanks to the exec for the awesome work.

Waikato/BoP - Elizabeth Youard: found the presentation on registration given out by
NZSTA along with the opinion poll very informative and helpful in clarifying what the
options are.
Deborah McKellar: do we have any time frames that we expect to have outcomes?
Annabelle Hastings: no dates yet.

Central - Anna Miles has provided updates in Communication Matters. Area Rep will
follow up with Anna Miles about timeline for disclosure of survey results to
members.

NZSTA on Social Media
Feedback from the recent member survey indicated that we have many members
who are not aware of NZSTA’s social media platforms. We would encourage
members to follow NZSTA on twitter @NZSTA and on Facebook. You will find many
useful items uploaded regularly .

If you wish to have an item submitted on the Facebook page, contact Annette
Rotherham communications@speechtherapy.org.nz. If you have a research related
item to post, please contact Anna Miles at
professionalstandards@speechtherapy.org.nz

Task during meeting: Have a look at the NZSTA Facebook page and discuss any post
up or any you may wish to make.

                                                                                    5
Auckland – Akshat discussed busy Facebook page and Twitter feeds, encouraged
members to look into them. Talklink members suggested timed posts to capture
audiences and engage the public more.

Northland - We had a look at the NZSTA facebook page and realized that although
several of us like and follow it, the articles do no appear in our newsfeeds. Not really
sure why this is – maybe because we don’t interact with the page much??

Otago/Southland - Members discussed benefits of Twitter including access to lots of
free up-to-date information on new research. Members suggested following the ICP
and Rose Centre on Twitter.

NZSTA Professional Development Symposium 2018

Claire Winward is pleased to announce that the 2018 Professional Development
Symposium will be held at the Otago Museum on September 13-14. Please note this
in your diaries now.

Task for Meeting: Please discuss and feedback any themes or keynote speakers you
feel may be of interest.

Auckland – some interest, while some members have provided feedback that
Dunedin was quite far for a symposium, though they acknowledged the venue is
rotated between regions. Members have asked for the opening date for
submissions.

Northland - Request for a fun event like a dinner

Cant/Westland - Auditory processing in SLT
Provocative speaker to discuss best practice and service delivery models
Fluency
Bilingual AAC
Telepractice
Have some workshops added to the format rather than solely lecture style

Otago/Southland - Suggestions included:
   ● Voice theme
   ● SLT role in mental health (including psychogenic disorders).
   ● Interdisciplinary working (Tika/Gina at University of Canterbury suggested as
      speakers).
   ● Cross-disciplinary learning/training.

                                                                                       6
● Ethical dilemmas.
   ● Use and availability of rehab assistants.

Waikato/BoP - General consensus: like having separate pediatric and adult days.

Central
- Hawkesy Bay is intending to send 1 person
- Other areas unsure about attendance at this stage

Ke Kete Whanaungatanga

Whanaungatanga over the past few months. This is the group that supports the role
of Māori and Cultural Development.

If you feel you would like to know more about this group or become involved, please
contact Renee Taylor at culturaldevelopment@speechtherapy.org.nz

Task for Meeting: No specific task

Professional development
Area Reps – if you would like to have a guest speaker or have a specific topic to
discuss, this is the opportunity. If you do not have any PD planned, you can skip this
item

Auckland – TalkLink note the ISAAAC conference on the Gold Coast pertaining to
AAC. There is a free ATANZ webinar on the 25th of February. Members have shown
interest in having Tony Atwood and Sur Larkey visit again. There is a SOFFI workshop
and some interest in this too. Voon Pang noted that START is happy to receive
feedback and are always looking into workshops which would support community
based SLTs.
Gwenn Mann – attended 3day workshop on Using Games for assessment.
It was presented by Mandia Mentis and Ann Terry who is a psych doing her Phd on the
subject. There were 5 Psychs, 1 SEA and 1 RTLB who attended. It was open to all MOE staff.
It was a very stimulating, informative and inspiring workshop.
I think it is extremely pertinent to our work and provided a framework.
“Mediated Learning” by Mandi Mentis Marilyn Dunn-Bernstein and Martene Mentis is one
of the books I have borrowed.
Some of us offered to continue to be interviewed as part of Ann’s Phd research.

Cant/Westland - Professional development activities for students discussed. 4 events
happening for Canterbury student members this year. Free for student members and
$5 koha for non-members. Presenters can keep koha. Charis and Helena will
facilitate with Ruth and Kate supporting. Thanks to our Canterbury members who

                                                                                             7
have volunteered their time and expertise – we are still keen to hear from anyone
else who could discuss the following topics with students Tues 5pm 1 hour – UC
campus.

SLT working overseas

Central
Area Rep inquired about upcoming PD opportunities and what PD topics would be
relevant to address during area meetings:
        - Private practitioner Kylie Willoughby has found useful online PD for Down
           Syndrome
        - Suggestion for future PD topic: Lise – Paediatric Dysphagia
        - Upcoming PD: Nicola, Susan from Hawke;s Bay will be attending Voice
           Craft in Nelson in March

Open Forum
This provides a time for members to share websites, articles and resources of

from this section can be included in the minutes for those members in your area
and may also be used to write your summary for Communication Matters.

Cant/Westland - Upcoming PD for Canterbury members:
Voice craft workshop – Nelson. End of March
AAC ISSAC – Gold coast. July. Early bird closes end of feb
Webinars by Pearson – new tests discussed. Pearson.com
Tongue Tie Symposium – Auckland, 13th April – info attached for Canterbury
members.

Question from Karina Sandweg who was unable to attend: I wanted to ask the group whether
there is interest in having a once-monthly PD group. We would meet and discuss one or more
articles (predetermined by the group, of course), and also any professional inquiry that the group
could address for those attending. The idea is, “more heads think better than one.”
 - Email Karina if you’re interested in meeting up ksandweg@gmail.com

An introduction and questions from Ali Lunn who was unable to attend

                                                                                                     8
I would like to take the opportunity of introduce my new role within Canterbury. Following
on from the great work that Annette Howard did in the SLT Liaison role with Canterbury
Initiative, I have since taken over the reins.

The Canterbury Initiative is aimed at improving and providing ‘whole system’ health. This
incorporates all our SLT colleagues in all sectors including education, health and private
practice. It is my role to establish good relationships with all SLTs working in Canterbury and
identify and problem solve key issues that are raised.

I would also like to establish some common goals/themes that we could work towards and I
am hoping to make contact with as many of you as possible over the next few months.

My goal would be to identify key SLT’s in each sector of practice to liaise with and
disseminate relevant information to.

I would welcome your thoughts and feedback and please feel free to contact me if you
would like to discuss any of this in more detail

Waikato/BoP –
Gwen Kerrison: Asked group about implementing IDDSI in our workplaces – where
are we all at?
Teddie van Pelt (on IDDSI working group): the 2018 focus is on implementing IDDSI
(where the 2017 focus was more on education and raising awareness), however this
will look unique in every workplace. This is because implementing IDDSI requires a
lot of collaboration between SLT’s, Dietitians and nutrition services at a given
organisation. For example, at Waikato DHB, we have been discussing IDDSI with
other services and building relationships, but do not necessarily anticipate
implementation will be achieved this year.
Gwen Kerrison: where is the best place to access resources around ideas of how to
implement IDDSI?
Teddie van Pelt: http://iddsi.org/ If I receive any other information through the
working group I will pass that on to our area members. Anna Miles has been in touch
with NZSTA EC and updated them with the progress from the IDDSI working group.
Anna’s advice is: Please keep in touch and initiate conversations / engage the
support of clinicians and share experiences. We really want this to be a collaborative
initiative that builds relationships across industry and health services. I am keen to
keep track of progress so please let me know what is happening in your area.

Other Matters for Exec
Please provide member name and contact details (if member consents) so that a
member of the EC can follow-up directly and gather any further information to
ensure that the member’s request, question or issue is appropriately & accurately
responded to.

What other issues would members in your area like to raise with the Exec?

Auckland - Several concerns regarding a private practice in West Auckland
advertising as “Number 1 clinic for SLT”, SLT related intervention provided by an
optometrist (who owns the business), quality of service provided to the community
and bringing SLT into disrepute (anecdotal)

                                                                                    11
Recent interview with “Si and Gary” on the radio on 21.2.18 where the hosts noted
that ‘Speech Pathologists’ can assess and diagnose speech problems but speech
therapists can only treat speech problems. Members asked if NZSTA can address
perception of SLT in the community and in the media, particulkarly so as to not do a
disservice to hard working SLTs who assess and diagnose speech and language
difficulties.
A member came across the following on the web and wondered if it needs to be
checked out from NZSTA’s perspective and the accreditation process?
www.coursesforsuccess.co.nz/products/speech-therapy
It is described as a 150 hour online diploma with essentially no pre-entry
qualifications.

Nortlhland - Some members expressed disappointment that the joint conference
with SPA means that now there will only be a conference in NZ every 4 years. This is
a long time, particularly for a new grad. Will scholarships for travel to Australia be
available? And will people be able to watch online?

What other feedback would members like to share with the Exec?

Northland - Many members found the old Professional Development section the
most useful part of the meeting, so we will continue to discuss it.

Otago/Westland - Question – is there any plan to have a separate webpage or
facebook page for Giving Voice Aotearoa?

Auckland - please thank them for a very informative edition of Communication Matters (the latest
one which we received a few weeks ago)

Time to socialise (optional but encouraged)

Completed Area Minutes should be returned to Akshat Shah
(ar.auckland@speechtherapy.org.nz) by the (21st Feb). The next
Executive Committee meeting will be held in Auckland on 13th March

                                                                                              12
