BIBA’s Lindsay Campbell and Katie Reay talk about the planning needed to prepare for Europe’s largest insurance event. This time of year is a very busy one for the BIBA Conference team leaders. Aside from the pressures of coping with ever-increasing delegate numbers, what have the team been looking to improve? ‘Last year we introduced the Hackathon, the first BIBA innovation challenge with eight teams battling to solve some of brokers’ biggest problems against the clock,’ said Lindsay.
‘From all accounts the initiative was a huge success, but we do want more broker members to appreciate how technology can make a direct impact on their businesses. So the Hackathon will continue in 2019, but this time it will be moved to a more prominent site at the front of the venue. It will also be a core part of the programme for delegates, so we will be running two sessions in the main seminar programme, one on innovation and one on the Hackathon Finalists.
What else is new for 2019? ‘Well, the exhibition is the heart of the event, allowing delegates and exhibitors the chance to get months’ worth of business done in two days. So looking to support this further, we are introducing a new event App, which will allow visitors and exhibitors to arrange meetings before travelling to Manchester. There will be nine new Business Hubs built into the exhibition and the App will let visitors book the hubs for short meetings, which we hope will be a great new benefit of coming to BIBA,’ commented Lindsay.
Katie, anything you’re really looking forward to? ‘Well, I’m really looking forward to the session on Thursday with Professor Green, Freddie Flintoff and Katie Piper, as mental wellbeing is such an important subject for us all.
And BIBA’s Manchester Region are putting on a quiz night on Wednesday, which sounds a lot of fun!’ Lindsay and Katie will be manning the Enquiries desk in the Registration area and are always on hand to help and support members to make the most of their visit.

Speaker Spotlight 4 Every year the team works hard to deliver a terrific line-up of speakers, and the 2019 conference is no exception. With subjects as diverse as national security, mental health and politics (and that’s just the keynote sessions!), be prepared to come away from BIBA 2019 informed and inspired. We asked our speakers to divulge a little of what they plan to discuss in their sessions. Ask the Insurer Wednesday Keynote 14.20 We are delighted that Jon Dye, Chief Executive of Allianz Insurance and John Neal, Chief Executive Officer at Lloyd’s will be panelists in our Wednesday industry keynote.
We asked them some important questions: What are the biggest hurdles for the sector in 2019 and how can those issues be solved?
JD “It would be somewhat obvious to say that Brexit is the biggest uncertainty facing the sector. Our role as an insurer is to support our customers and inspire confidence by providing straightforward and practical solutions. Brexit is not the only big legislative and regulatory change we will have to manage in 2019 and the challenge for insurers is to maintain the highest level of service whilst making whatever changes are necessary.” JN “Tough market conditions continue to put the sector under pressure. These conditions will continue for the foreseeable future and will force us to look at everything we do, and consider how we can do it better, cheaper and faster.
The next decade will see some fundamental changes in insurance and we need to be proactive in making changes today so we are ready to seize tomorrow’s opportunities.” How can we use innovation and technology to improve the insurance market? JD “We should look at how companies in other sectors are improving their businesses and experiences for their customers. How might we adapt these ideas to our own markets? We need to keep working at ways we can simplify what can be a complex product into something that can be easily understood and used.” JN “Our focus must always be on how we can deliver the best possible products and services to our customers.
We need to listen better to our customers, and innovate the products we offer, and the way we distribute them. Technology is obviously important here in reducing costs and making us more agile, but also in providing this improved customer experience.” What are you excited about discussing in the session?
JD “I’m looking forward to a lively debate – I’m sure there will be different points of view and I hope these will engage the audience. The topics of digitalisation, customer focus and inclusion are of particular interest to me. A lot has been achieved in these areas but much more can be done and I hope that we get the chance to explore these opportunities in our discussion.” JN “My team and I are working with the market to set Lloyd’s up for success in the short, medium and long-term. We have met with many market participants over the last two months, gaining insights into what’s important to them and how we as a market can provide that.
I look forward to sharing some of this work with the audience.” Claims Wednesday Seminar 12.00 David Bonehill, UK Claims Director for Ecclesiastical has responsibility for setting strategy and philosophy in partnership with key stakeholders in order to deliver excellent standards.
“I am really looking forward to discussing how the claims profession is responding to changing customer demands. A concerning pitfall in our industry, especially this time of year, is the potential of a weather surge - does the claims market have the capacity to respond adequately?” Damian Glynn is Director and Head of Financial Risks at Sedgwick whilst also chairing the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) Business Interruption Group. “Whilst dealing with large business interruption and financial claims both within the UK and abroad, I stumble across several issues including the level of under-insurance in BI and PD.
What are the causes of this? Another issue is reconciling widespread support for the CII/CILA 2012 BI wording report with limited actual implementation in policies. Why is this? There are widespread concerns thrown up by recent events – Brexit, the Salisbury Novichok situation to name a couple. Are policies still fit for purpose with advancement of new innovation in the BI/PD market?”
5 Mike Crane is Managing Director at LV= Broker and is responsible for the delivery and strategy of Commercial and Personal Lines Broker Business. “Claims are the point when our promise to our customers comes to life. We need to be constantly challenging whether our delivery matches and/or exceeds changing customer expectations. Insurance needs to keep up with speed and service demands. We need to question how we make sure we are truly customer focussed - what can we learn from other business sectors? How can we streamline and speed up delivery?” Innovation Wednesday Seminar 12.00 Elliot Biggs has worked in Financial Services for over 15 years, covering Mortgages, Banking and Insurance and is currently Chief Information Officer for C-Quence Technologies.
“Being innovative and thinking about how we bring about change is key to making the insurance industry better for our customers, for brokers, insurers and for the many people who work in this industry. My experience over many years in both personal and commercial lines insurance across strategy, business change and technical roles has given me insight into the good, the bad and the down-right ugly of innovation in the sector. There are so many opportunities for new ways of thinking; new technology and changing consumer behaviours are opening up possibilities which perhaps haven’t existed before.
The smallest incremental innovation can have big impacts within businesses. Opportunities significantly increase in magnitude when whole sectors shift for the benefit of their customers, technology and innovative thinking have a central part to play in this.” Brexit Thursday Seminar 10.40 Matt Francis leads KPMG’s UK Insurance regulatory technical team and leading up to the EU referendum and thereafter, advises a number of insurers on their Brexit strategies and contingency planning.
“Is the broking community adequately prepared for Brexit? Brokers will need to have identified the potential challenges to their business models and operations.” Access to Insurance Thursday Seminar 10.40 Chris Rolland is Chief Executive Officer of AllClear and is passionate about supporting high customer ethics standards. “Access to insurance for vulnerable customers is a hugely important industry issue and must be adressed collaboratively by not only the insurance industry and the FCA, but with the involvement of the charity sector and consumers themselves. We at AllClear have launched an ‘Action Group’ comprising leading medical charities and BIBA, in order that the travel industry support greater accessibility of travel insurance for customers with pre-existing medical conditions.
Charities tell us that customers are worried about the costs and confused about how insurance works for them, and crucially, where to go to get access to specialist insurance. Many simply don’t understand why their insurance quotes are so high and the Charities have been very clear that they want to educate their stakeholders about what comprehensive travel insurance is and how it is priced, and they want this information to come from industry experts.” Johnny Timpson is Scottish Widows’ financial protection specialist and is currently DWP Disability Champion for the Insurance Industry. “I’ve been part of many panel debates where discussion has centred around “if the regulator did this or Government did the other”.
Treating Customers Fairly, the Insurance Distribution Agreement and Senior Managers Regime requires and empowers us as both an industry and profession to do the right thing and act. Key issues we need to address are - consumer, media, charity, politician and in many cases adviser perception that due to an individual’s health, disability, lifestyle, occupation and body image that they cannot get appropriate and affordable cover. Also we need to raise awareness of the benefits of advice plus collaborative industry, professional body, charity and single financial guidance body commitment in order to make effective “signposting to specialists” the norm.
One of the sensitivities we need to be aware of in this field is, as highlighted by Macmillan Cancer Support, that the use of language is crucial - don’t use terms such as “battling cancer” far better to say “living with or living beyond.” DON’T FORGET YOU CAN CLAIM CPD HOURS TOO! BIBA Hackathon 2019: Power to Y BIBA is on a long-term campaign to demystify innovation for brokers, to help our members stay relevant in a changing world. As you saw in this year’s Manifesto, we’re working on a number of fronts including data ethics, digital up-skilling and securing commitment from software houses, providers and others (like Polaris) to work with us to ensure that brokers can meet the needs of today’s Internet of Things consumer. We want to bring the best ideas from insurance innovation, whether that comes from established firms or InsurTechs. Our goal is to bring fresh thinking, new techniques and interesting tech into focus and within reach.
And we know you’ll decide what works for you, your customers, people and business.
Our first Hackathon in 2018 achieved all its goals — and some more we didn’t think about! So the Hackathon goes into its second year already enjoying more awareness and interest from the insurance community as a whole. That’s great but we’re determined to strive even harder to make it easier for brokers, and everyone at conference, to be more involved and to experience more of the process. We think it could really be worth you checking out what we’re up to in Hackathon’19. “ BIBA’s 2018 Hackathon demystified the Hack technique and set an international-level standard for this kind of event.

• Our teams and supporting experts will have a new home, in a dedicated Hack Zone in Central Foyer. You won’t be able to miss it! 5 Hackathon MYTHS 1. It doesn’t work It really does. Some people knew each other or worked in the same firm, many were complete strangers and yet all eight teams worked on randomly-assigned challenges and each produced a workable prototype within the deadline — remember, this was less than a working day. “89% said that on the basis of the BIBA Hackathon experience, they would go back and recommend the approach in their own firms.” 2. You have to have done this before No.
For the vast majority of participants, last year was their very first experience of a hack or sprint of any kind. No special expertise or knowledge is needed. What matters is what you know best: putting your insurance knowledge and thinking power to work. More ways to check out the 6
hack athon TWENTY 19 OU! More on BIBA’s Commitments BIBA hears a lot from brokers about a whole host of areas that affect them and their businesses. On technology and digital issues, brokers told us they would like training to increase their skills and knowledge of what technology can do for them. You spoke, we listened. This year, BIBA is rolling out a programme of ‘digital up-skilling’ sessions designed to be relevant to everyone; from those taking their first steps, to the more experienced who are looking to develop their digital offering even further.
We’re going to be working with partners including Google and software houses to deliver this programme.
We’ve created three tiers so brokers can find their own level and move through the ranks as they become more comfortable with the different aspects of data and digital. These include ‘design thinking’ to understand how to go through iterative processes, as well as sessions to better understand what your data is telling you. • Tier 1: Becoming comfortable with digital; including digital marketing, social media and collaboration.
• Tier 2: Making sense of your data; for example Management Information tools, using Google Analytics and digital drop-in events to understand how customers use your website. • Tier 3: Becoming an innovator; introduction to coding and design thinking. The events will run throughout the year from March and such is the variety, there are sessions designed for business leaders as well as those in more day-to-day roles. 3. You need to be able to code Not at all. We ensure our hacksters are supported by volunteer experts in key areas like Customer Experience and App building. You get to know them very quickly in the Hack Zone, and they’re there to help turn great ideas into demos. 4. We’re only interested in Data or Tech ‘solutions’ Wrong again! Both Data and Tech can be huge enablers and will probably turn out to be an essential ingredient. But they are certainly not the solutions in themselves. They are powerful tools to help you design and bring solutions to life. 5. It’s all about Cyber, isn’t it? It’s not that type of Hack … but we don’t blame you for checking.
The word ‘hack’ has also become a common term to describe intense, focused and rapid experimentation, especially relating to innovation efforts. That’s why our participants are called ‘Hacksters’ and not hackers. Hackathon in 2019 Digital and data related technology is rapidly evolving. Enabling brokers to actively engage with it is becoming a key part of servicing customers in the modern market place.
