OPENING SENTENCE

Officiant        To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
                 neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws which he set
                 before us.                                                                     Daniel 9.9,10

CONFESSION OF SIN                                                                                     BCP 41

The officiant says to the people

Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render
thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear
his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life
and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in
silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his
infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence may be kept.

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts,
we have offended against thy holy laws,
we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and
we have done those things which we ought not to have done.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent,
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesus our Lord;
and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance,
amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

                                        THE INVITATORY AND PSALTER

All stand                                                                                             BCP 42

Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips.
People And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

PSALM 29

1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, *
       ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; *
       worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

3    The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
     the God of glory thunders; *
        the Lord is upon the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; *
       the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; *
       the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

                                                               4
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
       and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

7    The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;
     the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; *
        the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe *
       and strips the forests bare.

9 And in the temple of the Lord *
       all are crying, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; *
     the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.

11 The Lord shall give strength to his people; *
     the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

            Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
              as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON                                                                                                         Zechariah 9.9-12

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut
off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he
shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends
of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free
from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to
you double.

Officiant The Word of the Lord
People            Thanks be to God.

THE SECOND LESSON                                                                                                                 Matthew 21.1-11

When Jesus and his disciples had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives,
Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a
donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say
this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been
spoken through the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble,
and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had
directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A
very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on
the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of
David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he
entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is
the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
    who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
    born of the Virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, dead, and buried.
    He descended into hell.
    The third day he rose again from the dead.
    He ascended into heaven,
    and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
    From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost,
    the holy catholic Church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty and everlasting God, who, of thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son our Savior Jesus
Christ to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the
example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of his patience, and
also be made partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth
with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

                                                    9
A COLLECT FOR GRACE

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of
this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither
run into any kind of danger; but that we, being ordered by thy governance, may do always what is righteous
in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A COLLECT FOR MISSION

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of thy faithful people is governed and
sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before thee for all members of thy holy
Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and godly serve thee; through our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

A COLLECT FOR ALL SORTS AND CONDITIONS OF MEN

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of
men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations.
More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good
Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the
faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy
fatherly goodness all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially
those for whom our prayers are desired]; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to
their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their
afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

Where there is charity and love, there is God. The love of Christ gathers us in one. Exalt in Him and be glad. Let us fear
and love the living God. And from our hearts let us love one another more sincerely.

THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING                                                                                             BCP 58

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we thine unworthy servants
do give thee most humble and hearty thanks
for all thy goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all men.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for thine inestimable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee,
give us that due sense of all thy mercies,

                                                             10
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful;
and that we show forth thy praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to thy service,
and by walking before thee
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

THE BLESSING OF THE PALMS

Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People         And also with you.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your
Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was
proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let
these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail
him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you
and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
