1 1 RA, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1H 7X7 • 613-733-5100 • www.racentre.com • RiversideLadies 2018-2019 RACentreOttawa Welcome New Members I am pleased to welcome you to RA Riverside Curling, the ladies’ daytime section of the RA Curling Club (RACC). We hope you will enjoy this season’s program of curling and social activities. You are asked to complete two important forms (enclosed): i) Member History Information Form; and ii) Riverside Curling Activity Sheet Please return these forms as soon as possible to Melody Rochon, Coordinator, Recreation Club Services at the RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1H 7X7.

If you have any questions about how to fill in the form, please call Nicole Menzies at 613-737-5895 or email her at nicolelmenzies@gmail.com. We offer many opportunities for women to curl in the daytime and you can choose your own level of activity. Our main attraction is draw curling, where teams are “drawn” by committee and each team includes players with different levels of skill. Within the draw schedule, there are also 2 opportunities each season for teams to self-form. Our draw ice is on Tuesday AM & PM; Wednesday PM; and Thursday AM & PM. You will find our 2018-2019 schedule enclosed.

We also offer fixed-team curling and encourage our members to participate in RA mixed-team curling, both described in this package. Our members get invited to in-house RACC bonspiels, and many of us play in external bonspiels as well. Our Welcome Coffee Party and Information Session for new members will take place on Wednesday, September 26 at 9:30 AM in the Curling Lounge at the RA Centre. We hope that you can attend! You are also invited to our Fall Meeting and Luncheon on Friday, September 21, 2018 starting at 10:30 AM in the Courtside A Room (see enclosed activity sheet).

As a new member, you are encouraged to participate in our Instruction Program, a 4-session program that begins on Friday, September 28 and is free to novice curlers.

Details of this program are on page 3. Curling fees are listed within, under the heading “Register for Curling”. If you would like further information about women’s daytime curling, please contact Nicole Menzies at 613-737-5895. I look forward to meeting you. 3 3 RA, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON K1H 7X7 • 613-733-5100 • www.racentre.com • RACentreOttawa MiniWarm-UpEvent This event is for curlers with prior curling experience who are not attending the novice instruction clinics described below. The Mini Warm-Up will run September 28 as two draws. We will have 5 sheets for the morning draw and six sheets for the afternoon draw.

Each draw will be a six-end game. • Friday, September 28, 2018 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM • Friday, September 28, 2018 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Curlers may sign up for both draws. Please sign up on the enclosed Activity Sheet, and remember to mark your request on your personal calendar, as you will not hear from a skip until late-September.

Luncheons/Meetings As a Riverside member, you are invited to attend our social events. For the Fall event, use the enclosed Activity Sheet to register; for the other events, tickets will become available during the season. Please note the following dates on your personal calendar. Fall Luncheon and Meeting Friday, September 21, 2018, 10:30 AM Christmas Luncheon Friday, December 14, 2018, 11:00 AM Spring Luncheon and Meeting April 12, 2019, 10:30 AM Instruction/PracticeforNoviceCurlers Free instruction clinics are offered for novice curlers on September 28, October 3, 5 & 10, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

You may take these classes even if you are still considering whether to join the Club. Instruction is progressive, so try to attend as many of these sessions as possible. To sign up, please contact Nicole Menzies at 613-737-5895.

Novices who master basic delivery of the curling rock, and who join the club, will be encouraged to attend four (4) additional Wednesday AM classes called “Learn to Curl – the Next Step”. For this clinic, novices will be joined by other members who are also working on more advanced skills. This clinic helps prepare novices to play in draw curling during the Pre-Christmas draws. During the season, ice will be available on most Wednesdays from 9:00 to 10:50 AM for curlers to continue learning with the help of an instructor. Independent practice ice will also be available. See the section below on signing-up.

Friendly reminders for Draws: • Only sign up under your rated position. • If you know that you will miss half or more games in a draw, sign up to spare, or arrange to share with another curler. • Sign up to spare if you can. • Only sign up in pencil and cross out your name if changes are required. DO NOT ERASE, as erasing can affect other names or be ambiguous. • Each curler is responsible for signing up. You may ask a friend to do this for you. • It does not matter where your name appears on the sign- up sheet, though if a draw looks full, you might consider signing up for a different draw.

• Please mark all sign-up dates and your specific draw requests on your own calendar.

Match committee endeavours to place all signed-up draw curlers in the time slot requested and at their rated position. However, in order to minimize the possibility of disappointing curlers by randomly drawing members out of oversubscribed draws, it is sometimes necessary to ask randomly selected curlers to move to another time slot, or “play up” in a higher position. Please consider accepting these requests or, instead, opt to play as a spare. For Formed Team Events (where curlers self-form their own teams and curlers aren’t required to play their rated positions), the team’s skip fills in the sign-up sheet.

Instruction/PracticeforAllCurlers Dates, times and sign-up sheets for instruction and independent practice will be posted throughout the season in the curling lounge. To enable us to manage instructors’ time and ice usage, please sign-up in advance, and remove your name if you change your mind. Drop-in is also allowed; you can sign-up on arrival if you find ice available. Instruction: most Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 10:50 AM. Practice (no instructors): posted as ice is available SigningUpForDrawCurlingand FormedTeamEvents The schedule and sign-up dates for all events are shown on the accompanying “Draw Schedule” for 2018-2019.

Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the curling lounge by noon on the first day of the sign-up period and withdrawn at 3:00 PM on the final day. Note: the Fall session sign-up sheets will be posted on September 10 and withdrawn at the end of the luncheon on September 21.

Curlers may sign up for more than 2 draws a week, and even two draws on the same day as long as they are not Trophy draws.

4 4 FridayFixed-TeamCurling Fixed teams (unlike drawn teams) come together by their own choice or by invitation of a skip, and usually plan to curl together for a year or more. Riverside’s fixed-team games are normally played on Friday afternoons. If the number of teams exceeds 12, other ice-times may also be used. Curlers who aren’t on a Friday Fixed team may play as spares. Those who are on a Friday Fixed team must play in at least two regular draws over the course of the season.

FridayMorningMixed-TeamDraw There is a friendly Mixed-Team Draw on Friday mornings, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. It is open to all Daytime curlers: men and women. There is no requirement to sign up as a couple. Mixed curling is a great way to improve technique, play above your rated level, learn curling strategies from the opposite sex, get some extra games, meet other daytime curlers, and have fun!

Sign-up sheets for the first draw will be posted in the Curling Lounge on September 21. There will be a “Meet & Greet” on Friday, October 5 with on-ice practice and play from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. After play, coffee, tea and sweets will be available in the Curling Lounge. Draws begin on October 12. For more information, contact Urve Mundi at 613-726-7445 or urvemundi@gmail.com. Bridge Riverside Curling offers weekly bridge games for interested past and current members. This season, bridge will start on Monday, September 17 at 12:30 PM in the Curling Lounge. Bridge games overlap our Monday PM ice-time, so you’ll want to check the curling schedule before each session.

For further information, contact Thérèse Brown at 613-739-5586. YogafortheDaytimeCurler This course will focus on building strength, balance and functional flexibility while improving breathing and posture to help with memory, mental focus and concentration. You do not have to be flexible or have good balance to practice yoga. The class is participant centered, with options offered to meet the student’s needs. It is a great way to improve your game.

Each yoga session consists of 10 or 12 weeks. There are no classes during the Hope-Beddoe, Crystal Heart Classic, and MacDonald/ Paterson/Roy as many participants take part in these bonspiels. Register early to avoid disapointment. Fall Session* Tuesday September 25 to December 18 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Thursday September 27 to December 20 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM NoclassesonNovember20and27.
