Rotorua Lakes High School
1 Kia ora Koutou, The end of term is nigh and in that old adage “tag you’re it”!! On a serious note, it has been a very positive term at Lakes High and one which has seen numerous student successes and opportunities. Our Sports Prizegiving on Thursday night was a fantastic way to finish the term and a great celebration of many of those successes. Thanks to all for participating. I look forward to sport continuing to grow and develop in our school. As I said in the last newsletter I am pleased that our senior students understand that the next 2 weeks gives them a great opportunity to spend time preparing for the exams in term 4.
They also need a chance to re-charge their batteries and reflect on what still needs to be done.
On a personal note, I would like to thank our students, staff, parents and community for making my first term at Lakes High such an enjoyable experience. Each day has shown me that I made the right decision to move with my whanau to Rotorua. May I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you an enjoyable break. For those travelling, keep safe. I look forward to seeing everyone back safe, well, energetic and focused at the start of term 4. Nga mihi Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki CHALKBOARD NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 28 – 27 September 2019 Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth” From the Principal – P.

2 _ _ SPORTS PRIZEGIVING - A GREAT NIGHT Our annual Sports Prizegiving was held on Thursday 26 September in the D C Price Auditorium and it was an excellent occasion to celebrate our talented, successful and dedicated sporting students in their chosen sports. We were also able to thank and congratulate our wonderful coaches and managers for their commitment and unfailing support which has ensured an extremely successful sporting year. Our guest speaker was ERENA MIKAERE, an ex-student, who spoke of her passion and involvement in sport. Erana spoke of the awesome support she got from her family and her time at Lakes High School.
She sent her heartfelt gratitude to the teachers for their support and mentoring.
We thank Erena, for what was, an inspiring speech. A special thank you to the following people: Ms Lisa McFarlane, our Sports Co-ordinator for her brilliant organisation of this event with Whaea Pani Mc Lean, and to the support staff, Debbie McLeod, Jayne Humphries, Liandra Allen, & Paula Short who assisted her with administration and help at the event. Our wonderful groundsmen Maurice Pomare, Butch Tarei and Stacey Pomare, for their awesome help setting up and also for the following day in ensuring everything was put safely away. Our M.C. – Kat Goodrick, the 4 Head prefects; Taylan Onan, Ila Ford-Robertson, Estille Bilbe and Freddy-Ray Collier did a great job for the evening.
Our Year 12 student, Puaawai Bennett who provided the entertainment throughout the evening and our Head of Music, Marcy Stunell for her excellent support.
Mary Webster and her staff: Helen Gainsford and Marie Van Leeuwen and Annie Scott, and the Senior Food Technology students who prepared and organised the Auditorium for the event and did a fantastic job – thank you. The challenge aimed to encourage rangatahi to learn about business and enterprise, develop work-ready skills, and connect with local Māori entrepreneurs who are sharing their talents, passion and skills across Aotearoa. Thirteen of our students participated in this event last week. The students were able to learn an unfamiliar kaupapa in a context that was relevant to them and they were able to enjoy and achieve education success as Māori. The outcome was simply ‘Magic’. Nei rā te mihi ki a tātou katoa.
6 _ _ NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS by Maya Weir Arriving up at the lodge on Sunday the outlook for this North Island Secondary School ski champs didn't look good. The conditions on Sunday (practice day) were horrible with gale force winds and Monday, competition day, wasn't much better. By lunchtime on Monday the call was made to cancel the slalom events. By Wednesday, the conditions were perfect and everything was go! After an initial slow start getting the new gondola going the races were on. Everyone from the team had a clean run in the Giant Slalom event, with the A Team placed 40th out of approximately 110 teams, not our best result, but still okay considering that for some competitors, race day was their first venture onto snow this season! The rest of the ‘bluebird’ day Whakapapa put on was spent enjoying some free skiing with the final run together, off-piste out west.
All smiles at the end. The Rotorua Ski Lodge, with its outstanding views up towards the mountain and out over Tongariro National Park, and ski in/ski out accessibility is always a fun few days reprieve from the school grind. All they need is their NSN (this is on all the tracking reports and can be accessed through the KAMAR and Schoolpoint portals).
We strongly encourage students to do this often! NEWS

8 _ _ A GREAT YEAR FOR HARRY DURBIN Our Year 11 student, Harry Durbin, has had a great year so far. Harry played and captained the Western Heights High School U15 rugby team in the BOP U15 premier competition. They made it to semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Boys High. He was selected as the WHHS U15 player of the year. In rugby league he played for BOP in a quadrangular series against Waikato, Taranaki and Manawatu. He was selected in the tournament team from that competition. He has now been selected for the WaiCoaBay (combined Waikato, Coastline and BOP) team that will play in the Nationals U15 in the second week of the school holidays.
