RTH 2020 - Jenman African Safaris

When people step out of their comfort zone that is where the magic happens. In a world with so much conflict and confusion, we really believe that travel and the connection it fosters is the greatest tool for some much-needed compassion. We want to change the way our guests experience Africa and the way they think about their holiday. Instead of being only passive observers of the landscapes, wildlife and cultures they encounter we believe that when guests involve themselves by interacting and even making decisions that impact their lives back home, it becomes a more meaningful experience and builds longer lasting memories.

As African safari tour operators we are not only in the business of providing magnificent safari adventures but also in the business of conservation. Without the wild open spaces and uniquely African wildlife that roams them, we cannot survive. We are merely custodians of the wilderness areas that have been entrusted in our hands to protect – for future generations. We need to support the voiceless by having a very loud and far-reaching voice.

It is our responsibility in African travel to carry this message out to the world and make travellers understand and fall in love with Africa – as David Attenborough said – “people tend to protect only what they love”. With this message, we would like to call on our valued agents in the industry – help us sensitise travellers before they arrive in Africa and let us find ways of building a bridge between travel and the preservation and support of our communities and wilderness areas and most importantly – let’s collaborate for conservation. Travel trends and guest expectations change continuously and we at Jenman African Safaris have always been proud of how we adjust to new trends and traveller’s expectations.

Last year we identified a trend of slowing travel down and have since curated many of our safaris to reflect exactly that.

Sharing the stories of the communities and areas we are visiting and the people that help us to deliver our authentic safari experiences is what we are able to do by putting the ‘safari’ back into our ‘tours’. A safari is a journey – not just from A to B but a journey of your mind and heart, to engage with other cultures and a voyage of personal growth. A safari can build lasting connections, whether it be with the expert guides who share their stories or fellow travellers.

THE CONSERVATION MESSAGE IS NOT SOMETHING YOU DROP IN AT THE END - THE THREAT IS UNEQUIVOCAL PUTTING SAFARI BACK INTO SAFARI Travel allows people to break down boundaries, cross cultural divides and share meaningful moments that create a bond that is not easily broken.

Travel is one of the greatest connectors ABOUT US 01 We wholeheartedly look forward to connecting you with Africa. Sincerely, Katja and Garth

THE GROW AFRICA FOUNDATION Our Burning Issues for 2020 ROSMEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL Rosmead Primary in Cape Town is close to our office and close to our hearts. The Big Five Club, made up of Jenman volunteers, visits the school weekly to assist with the school’s aftercare and Jenman provides transport for educational day trips and local hikes. In 2019, with the help of the Belgotex foundation, we re-surfaced the pre-primary playground, giving kids a green and safe space to play. In 2020 we are fundraising for a much-needed dining area for the children.

You Can Help: By donating to the Rosmead Primary School dining area appeal.

DINGANI PRIMARY SCHOOL Dingani Primary is a rural school in Zimbabwe, close to Hwange National Park and the Hideaways eco-lodge Elephant’s Eye, Hwange. As well as supporting a variety of conservation awareness projects and school maintenance programs, our foundation supports the school through the following initiatives: Pack For A Purpose: By sparing just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and using it for muchneeded school supplies instead, you can make a priceless impact on the lives of local children. You Can Help: View the school’s needs list on our website and pack some educational items.

Early Childhood Development Teacher: The ECD class at Dingani typically has in excess of 100 students aged 3 to 5 years old and only one government subsidised teacher. In 2018 the Grow Africa Foundation started sponsoring a second teacher from the local community, Yolanda Ncube.

You Can Help: By sponsoring a month of Yolanda’s salary at US$ 200. Dingani Scholarship Fund: More than 50 % of the students cannot afford school fees (US$ 30 / Year). In 2019 the Grow Africa Foundation awarded scholarships to 12 students and in 2020 we intend to increase this to 14 students. You Can Help: By sponsoring a child’s education for one year with a donation of US$ 30 Project Penya: Each year we supply a set of washable sanitary pads and panties to every Grade 6 girl at Dingani Primary, allowing them to continue coming to school during their monthly menstruation. This is accompanied by an invaluable 3-day life-skills workshop for the whole class covering topics as diverse as health and hygiene, conflict resolution and leadership.

As part of our pledge to support local businesses, the washable pads are made for us in the community.

You Can Help: By buying a set of washable pads for a Dingani schoolgirl (US$ 25) CONSERVATION & WILDLIFE FUND The Conservation and Wildlife Fund (CWF), of which Hideaways is a founding member, is a collaborative group of conservationists and stakeholders in the Hwange National Park region who act on critical conservation issues. In 2020 the CWF is focusing on providing additional anti-poaching units (APU’s). You Can Help: By contributing to the CWF’s APU appeal. THE JENMAN PLEDGE With every booking received to the value of R10,000 or more, R50 (5$ or EUR5) is donated to Grow Africa. This covers all our overheads and contributes to developing, launching and subsidizing new projects.

You Can Help: By booking a Jenman African Safaris holiday! 03
