It all began in 1936 in the midst of “the worst winter in years.”” TThe he wwhole
country suffered in the grip of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. A New
York feature writer bemoaned the “fact” that, “Here we are in the midst of an
old-fashioned winter and there are no red flannels in the USA to go with it.”
The local newspaper, The Cedar Springs Clipper, owned and edited by “The
Clipper Gals” Nina Babcock and Grace Hamilton answered the writer with a RED
HOT editorial stating, “Just because Sak’s Fifth Avenue does not carry red flannels,
it doesn’t follow that no one in the country does. CEDAR SPRINGS’ merchants
    have red flannels!”
The story was picked up by The Associated Press and orders began pouring in
    from all over the USA.
Jack Pollock and his wife Ann, owners of Pollock’s Store in downtown Cedar
Springs, had a large stock of Red Flannels. They were tireless supporters of the
early Red Flannel Festivals and “drop seaters.”
Seeing the possibility of at least a few years of publicity because of our famous
“drop seaters” and lumbering history, a “RED FLANNEL DAY” was planned for
the fall of 1939. The love, pride and support of the community has kept the rich
tradition alive! It has continued to be an annual event, held the last weekend in
September and the first weekend in October for the 78th YEAR, making it the
15th oldest festival in the State of Michigan!
The Festival Board of Directors thanks all of the sponsors of the Festival and
the hundreds of volunteers who make this grand event possible!

Grace Hamilton & Nina Babcock, Festival Founders
Thank you for allowing us to reprint! By Tanya Eldred, The Cedar Springs Historical Society
If you have lived in or near Cedar Springs in the last
77 years, you have heard the story of how Cedar Springs
became the Red Flannel Town—many times. But do
we remember the efforts of the Clipper Girls—Nina
Babcock and Grace Hamilton—to get the Red Flannel
town on the map? When they answered the wire
from the Associated Press, it was just the beginning.
Metropolitan newspapers and the radio took up the
cause and spread the word. They received a flood of
letters from all over the United States and overseas
inquiring about Red Flannel underwear. There was
much more publicity than they expected. Nina Babcock (left) and Grace Hamilton (right)

spot in a time of war, when people could forget what
was looming on the horizon. That year, the town played host to thousands of deer hunters on their way up
north to the deer camps. Merchants and clerks wore red shirts or hunting togs and the town was decorated
for event. Five men from Grand Rapids chose the Queen from candidates submitted to the Clipper.
After Red Flannel Day, orders for the red flannel underwear were received from as far away as
Escanaba and Detroit, and other states such as Maine, Texas, California, Kansas, New York, Alabama,
Rhode Island, Florida, and Wyoming, and from Canada and Great Britain. They answered these and news

2018 Red Flannel Queen & Court Farewell Letter
Our reign this year has been an unbelievable experience, though it could not have been done without the sup-
port and generosity of many. First, thank you to all of the Red Flannel Festival board members and volunteers that
put so much work behind the scenes to keep the Red Flannel tradition going, that continues to bring our commu-
 nity together.
A big thank you to Ellie Brown our chaperone for being a second mom and guiding us through our journey, en-
couraging us, and giving us memories to last a lifetime. We are so appreciative of the many laughs and memories
that were made with you. Thank you to Kaleigh Goehler for passing on her knowledge and giving us her out-
pouring support in preparing us for our reign as Red Flannel Royalty. Finally to Cindy Patin for helping and being
there to support us during our year. We definitely could not have done everything without these three ladies.
Thank you to Char Dubridge for taking the time to make alterations on the queens dress in time for our amaz-
ing parade. To Lynne Riley for making sure our court member dresses were always perfect. To Diane Sabinas- For
our remarkable sashes that show who we are in a beautiful way, and to Jayne Bremmer- for supplying the Queen
and Court with our stunning jewelry.
Thank you to Terrance Beard from Rockford Footwear Depot for donating our shoes, to Ed Koehn Chevrolet for
our transportation and for your outstanding reliability and safety in new shiny trucks! Abby Olszewski thank you
so much for taking our professional photos to capture our grace and make each photo personal.
Thank you to our local organizations that welcomed us this year including the Cedar Springs Rotary, Cedar
Springs Women’s Club, Cedar Springs Library and the Red Flannel Rod and Gun Club. We met many heart-
warming and generous people on our visits. Thank you for your continuing support and encouragement through-
out the community as well as during our royal visits!
A loving thank you to our Red Flannel parents and families for making sure we always had everything we need-
ed, for always being our biggest fans, putting our beautiful float together every parade, and the constant reminders
that no matter what it is, we can accomplish anything!
Thank you to all who have donated to the Red Flannel Festival Queens Scholarship Fund! We are over the
moon with the support we had. All three of us plan on seeking a future in the medical profession. Zoe plans on
continuing her education in the medical field due to her fascination of a baby’s development, Harlow plans on
becoming a pediatric nurse and Alyssa plans on being a pediatric physical therapist.

The Red Flannel Community’s generosity continues to make these scholarships possible. THANK YOU to everyone who
contributed to this fund over the past 29 years!!! All of us working together, contributing what we can, help to make this
possible. In 2018, the Queen and her Court were awarded scholarships totaling almost $4,500, bringing the total of the
scholarships presented since 1990 to over $110,900!!!
Still focused on seeking involvement from the Red Flannel Community, past Queen and Court members, area businesses,
as well as contestants’ parents, relatives and friends, the Committee’s current goal is to raise $10,000 to share between the
Queen and Court; $5,000 for the Queen, and $2,500 for each of the Court members. Would you join us?? To contribute,
please send a check or money order payable to: Red Flannel Queen Scholarship Fund, PO Box 43, Cedar Springs, MI 49319.
On-line donating is still available through PayPal!! Go to the main festival website, redflannelfestival.org, and click on the
“Queen Donation” button at the very bottom. Donations are accepted through June 30, 2020, for the 2019 Queen and
Court. All contributions are tax deductible and NO administrative fees are taken from your donations.

Welcome to the
Red Flannel Festival
     Celebratimg 80 years in 2019!
2019

                                            Rand Ruwersma, of Cedar Springs,
has been chosen as Grand Marshal for the
                                             80th annual Red Flannel Festival.
Former Festival Board Memeber and Local Businessmen.

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has named Cedar Springs
resident Rand Ruwersma as the 2019 Grand Marshal for the 80th
Annual Celebration, to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
“The Festival is extremely proud and thankful for the many years of Rand’s outstanding dedication to the
Cedar Springs community and his dedication as a Festival Board member,” said Nancy Deyman,
President of the Festival.
Ruwersma has lived in Cedar Springs most of his life. He said his parents owned a summer home on
Pine Lake when he was young, and they moved here for good from Grand Rapids in 1967, when
Ruwersma was about 6 years old. He went to school in Cedar Springs and graduated from Cedar Springs
High School.
He has also been a local businessman in the community. Ruwersma owned the Cedar Hardware store for
five years, with his brother Bob. He bought the Cedar Pub in 2005, and owned that for 12 years.
Rand served on the Red Flannel Festival Board for over 8 years, the last several as First Vice President.
He also served on the Red Hawk Athletic Booster Board and served as a Cedar Springs Lion for several
years, with one term as President of the Lions Club,
”It is very obvious Rand loves The Red Flannel Town and especially the Red Flannel Festival! Rand was
instrumental in the success of the Festival from 2006 through 2014. The Red Flannel Festival and Cedar
Springs is a better place because of his involvement,” said Deyman.
Ruwersma said he was surprised to be selected. “I am happy to do it. As a kid, I never thought I’d end up
there, or even on the board,” he remarked.
Ruwersma will reign this year, the Festival’s 80th Annual Celebration, over the two weekends of the 15th
oldest Festival in the state of Michigan, sharing the Red Flannel warmth of our community to visitors
and residents.
Red Flannel Day Will Be Saturday, October 5, 2019.
