Actelis Solutions Service Operators Solutions - Business Services

BUSINESS SERVICES
Profitably Get High Speed, Reliable Carrier Ethernet Services Out to Small and Medium Business Using EFM
over Copper or Fiber

The Small and Medium Business (SMB) Ethernet services market is creating huge access, value added
service, and Cloud revenue opportunities. SMBs are using the network more strategically now, and as a
result many of them are demanding 10 Mbps, Nx10 Mbps and 100M or 1G of bandwidth. But getting
reliable Carrier Ethernet services to SMBs is not easy given the small buildings they frequently occupy, and
the distance to those buildings from the fiber network.

NxT1/E1-based services cannot scale to meet this demand cost effectively, and reaching the vast majority
of SMBs with fiber optics is simply too expensive. But waiting to offer these customers high speed Ethernet
will result in customer churn and lost revenues that no incumbent or independent telco or CLEC can afford.

Actelis advanced broadband over copper transmission technology makes copper the key to profitably
offering Advanced Carrier Ethernet services to SMBs. Actelis solutions enable operators to take reliable,
high speed Nx10 Mbps Ethernet services and up to 100s of Mbps to SMB buildings cost effectively using
copper. Actelis’ hybrid copper-fiber solutions enable quick and cost-effective service delivery over bonded
copper today, while providing a smooth migration path to fiber backhaul where it makes sense in the
future.

Your Benefits:
  • Combats the loss of Ethernet and Cloud service revenues to cable operators
  • Allows for the “End of Life” of costly NxT1/E1 services
  • Significantly reduces the CapEx investment needed to reach SMBs
  • Results in a profitable business case for serving SMBs with Ethernet services
  • Creates lucrative retail, wholesale, Carrier Ethernet, and “better than best effort” services
  • Takes advantage of the rapidly growing demand from SMBs
  • Enables offering and bundling a variety of operator or partner-provided Cloud services
 • Enables profitable single-customer delivery or “bandwidth to the building” strategies that further
   enhance profitability

Single SMB Customer per EAD/CPE
Serving SMBs using 4, 8 or 16 pair
ML640E series CPE provides enough
capacity to serve many SMB
bandwidth needs over great
distances without repeaters. Traffic
from the CPE is aggregated back
into an Actelis ML6916, ML230 or
ML2300 aggregation device in a
point-to-point or point-to-multipoint
configuration.

Efficient transport with throughput of
up to 15 Mbps per pair (depending
on distance) is possible. Standards-
based MEF CE2.0 compliant wholesale or retail services are possible with the Actelis SMB Ethernet solution,
which supports offering the services they need today as well as future scalability and a smooth migration
path to fiber should it be needed.

For example - A 20 Mbps service can be provided over 11 pairs to a distance of up to 10 kft/3 km (26
AWG/0.4mm). A 50 Mbps service can be provided over 16 pairs to a distance of up to 7 kft/2 km (26
AWG/0.4mm).

Actelis ML2300 units and ML640/E series are CE 2.0 certified and compliant, supporting E-LAN, E-LINE as
well as E-Tree services.

Multiple Customers per EAD/CLE1 – Bandwidth to the Building/MTU/MDU
For buildings with multiple SMB
customers or for larger
individual SMBs, a service
provider might want to use
more than 16 bonded copper
pairs to offer 100 Mbps or
more of service cost effectively
offer high speed, reliable links
to enhance network efficiency
and profitability.
Actelis ML640E units are each equipped with 5 RJ45 interfaces and 2 SFPs that can be used for individual
SMB connectivity. The CLE would be installed in the common telco equipment closet in the basement or
ground floor.
The Bandwidth to the Building with EoC is much like the strategy many service operators used when rolling
out fiber to a large building, leveraging the marketability of immediately available high-speed service to
customers to enhance sales efforts. Once bandwidth has been taken to SMB buildings with Actelis EFM over
Copper, offering customers a short ‘try and buy’ period has proven to be an extremely successful strategy.
SMB customers quickly see the reliability and enjoy the benefits of reliable, dedicated, symmetrical high-
speed bandwidth.

Extended Reach for a Remote Customer
For service providers with their own copper, Actelis’ ability to support up to 8 repeated links extends
distance out to even the most
remote customer locations in
the metro.
This enables providing 10
Mbps or Nx10 Mbps services
out to 40 kft/12km or more to
reach remote customers and to
serve all of customers’
locations.
For example: A 20 Mbps
service over 11 pairs and a
50 Mbps service over 16
pairs can be extended to up

to 50 kft/15km and beyond (24 AWG/0.5mm) with repeaters.

Distribution of Business Services from a Remote Cabinet
SMB customers are often
not in central urban areas
in close proximity to a
Central office.
SMBs typically choose office
facilities based on cost and convenience of the location to
customers or employees.
These places are likely to be beyond the reach
of a fiber ring and may be at a significant distance
from a major CO. Actelis solutions are compact
devices that can easily fit into a telco cabinet allow
service providers to effectively use copper to distribute
high bandwidth services from existing telco cabinets located
much closer to the SMB buildings.

High Service Availability - Using Fiber-Copper Hybrid Connectivity -
Financial Business
Financial institutions are usually
seeking to have very high
availability. Service providers can
utilize their copper to provide an
alternate route to fiber to ensure
enahnced availablity that is offered
through a completely separate
technology medium and a different
cable route. Actelis provides diverse media access ranging up to 100s of Mbps and beyond
over copper as well as fiber.

Actelis Solutions Service Operators Solutions – Residential Broadband

Extending 25-50-100-250 Mbps services with Actelis VBA/SBA
Customers demand for bandwidth is escalating especially with the growth in video-based services. Telecom
operators are experiencing grave competition from cable, wireless/mobile as well as other alternative
operators utilizing new technologies allowing them to provide higher bandwidth services. FTTH is often too
expensive to be justified or it takes too much time allowing the competition to steal customers. Operators
are looking to find alternative way to cost effectively raise the bar enabling higher bandwidth services such
as 40, 50, 100M and even 250M downstream to their customer as well as much higher US.
Actelis VBA/SBA offer an
immediate cost-effective
solution easy to install that can
allow significantly higher
bandwidth and longer
coverage for their targeted
services.

Combating bad in-house copper and bridge taps with Actelis VBA-C and SBA-C
Customers demand for bandwidth is escalating especially with the growth in video-based and services and
work/study at home requirements. Many customers are not managing to get the promised bandwidths due
to issues with bad in-house cabling or bridge taps. Bridge taps can cause a 50% loss of bandwidth, and as
service bandwidths increase with Super-vectoring (VDSL 35B), these effects become more significant.
Sending a technician to solve these issues is costly and time consuming. Installing a compact VBA-C (VDSL
17A) or SBA-C (VDSL 35B) amplifier next to a customer’s home router can easily solve these issues and
restore bandwidths.
Actelis VBA-C and SBA-C offer an
immediate cost-effective solution
easy to install that can solve
bandwidth degradation caused by
bridge taps and bad in-house
cabling and significantly restore
customer bandwidths.

BACKHAUL – MOBILE, SMALL CELL, METRO CELL
Providing cost effective bandwidth to meet the growing demand for mobile data services is a challenge
operators must meet if they are to provide competitive services and remain profitable. Small cells enable
reuse of spectrum and “fill in” coverage in areas where high network utilization is expected. The service
provider that can get sufficient backhaul to the right places to build out small cells more quickly will have
advantages in quality of experience for their subscribers,
not to mention reduced churn and net subscriber additions.
Fiber optics is cost effective for small cell backhaul only
when fiber is already present. Wireless backhaul options
based on microwave radio and 60/80 GHz millimeter
wave radio, are not effective in many cases due to the lack
of line of sight, no adequate mounting options at street
level, the cost, and complexity of planning and deployment.
Performance varies from city to city and changes based on
weather. In the case of NLOS technologies, planning can
be even more difficult and performance over time less
predictable.
Actelis makes small cell backhaul quicker, easier, and more cost effective at many locations by providing
reliable, high performance broadband over copper – which is almost universally available down at the
street level. Using Actelis wherever possible accelerates time-to-market and cost optimizes the overall small
cell build. The Actelis Networks WiFi Backhaul Solutions enable carriers to cost effectively bring more
bandwidth back from WiFi networks that are distributed in a wide variety of locations throughout the
metro, many of which are typically located off the fiber network footprint. Actelis provides high
performance Ethernet that is cost effective and scalable up to 15Mbps per pair with G.SHDSL and up to
100Mbps per pair with VDSL.
The Actelis WiFi Backhaul Solution is based on hybrid fiber-bonded copper EFM portfolio, which is
complemented by Actelis advanced EFM repeaters and its innovative analog Broadband Amplifier to

asymmetrical mobile backhaul that is reliable, high performance, and effectively reaches throughout the

Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multi-Point G.SHDSL topologies are supported with Actelis high density and
hardened aggregation solutions. Point-to-Multi-Point for asymmetric backhauling with VDSL can be
supported with any DSLAM that offers standard compliant VDSL2/ADSLx bonding.

TRANSPORTATION - ITS – INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC SYSTEMS
Federal, state, and municipal governments are increasing the efficiency of traffic flows, increasing safety,
reducing pollution, and avoiding or delaying the need for costly upgrades to road systems by actively
monitoring and controlling them as part of an intelligent traffic systems network. They are also increasingly
offering WiFi as a public service. This requires the placement of various traffic and environmental sensors,
signal controllers and electronic signs, HD cameras and hotspots throughout the metro. Copper is the easiest
and most efficient way to get high performance bandwidth where it is needed, and Actelis Networks
provides an ultra-reliable, low maintenance, cost efficient solution for backhauling these sensors and
cameras over copper on one integrated IP/Ethernet network. A recognized name in Intelligent Traffic
Solutions, Actelis makes hardened, space efficient solutions purpose built to meet major ITS networks’
specifications.
Actelis offers a portfolio of rugged and reliable hybrid solutions supporting Fiber, G.SHDSL and VDSL2
Ethernet switches that are environmentally hardened and mount in a street cabinet, in a vault, on a pole, or
on a wall or strand. Suitable copper is typically available wherever needed throughout the metro road
grid, and at many places along highways.
Actelis’ ITS portfolio includes ML600 and ML684Dx platforms that provide up to 8 Ethernet user ports which
can connect HD cameras, traffic and environmental sensors, and WiFi hotspots using G.SHDSL bonded
copper. Actelis’ ML680Dx and ML500 families allow cost effective connectivity over fiber, and the ML700
family can utilize bonded VDSL2 over the copper infrastructure. Actelis’ ML690E, ML230 and ML2300
aggregation switches provides termination for 8, 16, 32 and up to 256 copper pairs, delivering an
efficient handoff to collocated IP/MPLS switches, routers, and controllers.
Flexible topologies including drop-and-continue networking (2+2 and 4+4 EAST/WEST) for flexible daisy-
chain deployment topologies along streets, extend service well beyond typical metro fiber points of
presence. Options in environmentally hardened, DIN rail mount, small form factor, and fan-less units suited

Actelis Solutions Campus, Education, Surveillance

CAMPUS, EDUCATION AND DISTANT LEARNING - CONNECTIVITY AND SURVEILLANCE
Today’s universities, colleges, and K-12 school systems all need reliable, high speed bandwidth everywhere. WiFi
has become an essential tool for enhancing productivity and communication all over the campus, while the
increasing use of surveillance cameras throughout the grounds is critical for reasons of safety and security.
Similarly, In K-12 school systems, adequate surveillance is essential to ensure safety and security on parking lots,
playgrounds and athletic fields as well as within buildings, while additional WiFi can be useful for providing
connectivity to temporary classrooms or athletic fields. With K-12 schools, sometimes just getting adequate
broadband access to the school itself can be extremely difficult and expensive, depending on the school’s
location.

Educators need more bandwidth for both access and transport, but fiber is frequently not available everywhere it
is needed, nor is it quick or affordable to build it out to reach all the diverse and sometimes remote locations
where broadband is required. Actelis Networks has the answer: reliable, high speed broadband over copper.

Actelis’ EFM over Hybrid Fiber-Copper solutions utilize the widely available copper twisted pairs and its “bonded
copper” technology to create a reliable, high speed transport. Up to 100s of Mbps can be achieved for
broadband access, transport, as well as a diverse access or transport media. Actelis solutions can also provide
10s of Mbps of bandwidth, extend reach to 30km/100kft and beyond, and support a variety of network
topologies. With Actelis, copper can be effectively used as a complement and extension off the existing fiber
network, or as a temporary solution with a smooth and easy migration path from copper to fiber wherever and
whenever needed.

Main Benefits:
  • Provides intra-campus connectivity as well as broadband access over fiber, copper or hybrid
    topologies.
  • High bandwidth where you need it - Bonding up to 16 and 32 pairs. -
    Up to 30 Mbps/2 pairs, 120 Mbps/8 pairs and 240 Mbps/16 pairs.
