Learn Something New Year
Dear friend in learning,
You may have noticed that over the last few years, Southwest Technical College and Southern Utah
University have been working together to bring new and exciting learning opportunities to our
community. Together, we have enjoyed welcoming community members into short-term classes in
subjects like cooking, art, recreation and outdoor hobbies. We’ve also filled new skills classes in areas
including mechanics, music, and sign language.
As we ring in the new year, our teams recognize that many community members have been impacted
by the effects of the pandemic. We also recognize how important it is to keep learning during times of
difficulty and how education can contribute to resilience. In this issue, you’ll notice an increased effort
to offer more online community learning options to help keep you engaged and active in learning. You
may also notice added information about our learn and work, tuition-free certificate options for helping
Utah residents get back to work and improve skills for employability.
From your friends in community education and professional development and Southwest Tech and SUU,
happy new year. Pick a class or two and join us in learning something new.

Why We
                     Love to Learn
Can you reach back to remember the first teacher you loved
or the first book that caused you to feel an emotional stir? Do
you recall your excitement on the first day of kindergarten or
your nerves leading up to taking the ACT test or walking onto
a college campus for the first time? If you are able to answer
yes to one or more of these questions, you likely already harbor
the answer to why it is that we love to learn.

The imprint of education on our lives is longer lasting and more
widespread than almost any other function we can engage
in. As we open our minds to allow for illumination–and often
our hearts, too–we position ourselves to gain something
intangibly new. In the process, we experience an evolution
that is often described by words like enrichment, culture,
                      happiness, understanding and opportunity.

Opportunity is what Southern Utah University and
Southwest Technical College are committed to bringing
to everyone living in our vibrant region. You may have
noticed that over the past few years, we’ve been
working to bring you affordable, fun, new classes
and short-term learning opportunities. What we
love most about our effort is the change we
see in you. When you take one of our classes
to pick up a new hobby or skill, or decide

resume, we see you grow and become
changed and new. We see minds and
hearts open, and we see friendships
