YEAR 10 OPTION BOOKLET 2021 INTRODUCTION 2021 The Stratford High School Year 10 Options Booklet outlines the range and nature of subjects available in 2021. In Year 10, there is a core curriculum that all students engage with, based on the New Zealand Curriculum. All students will complete compulsory subjects and optional subjects. We believe that students should continue to have choice and follow their chosen pathways. To meet the needs of our students, optional subjects are offered across the curriculum. This gives a student flexibility to choose of combination of subjects, allowing diversity and breadth to their own learning especially if they are unsure of their future pathway. This Year 10 Course Booklet is designed as a tool to provide information to help your child complete course selection for 2021. They will need to read the booklet carefully because they are making important decisions. They must make any decisions for the right reasons after seeking any advice from their parents, caregivers, subject teachers, deans and careers advisers. Once your child has read this course outline booklet, please complete the course selection form at the back of the booklet. There will also be options talks from subject teachers on Wednesday 14th October during the school day for students. This form should be brought to the Options Selection session on the morning of Thursday 15th October. A deadline has been set for Year 10 course selections to enable our school to begin planning for staffing and timetables for 2021. Please consider your course selections carefully as alterations may be difficult to make at a later stage. We believe that we have a varied and exciting range of subjects available that will provide every student academic development and opportunity at Stratford High School. CHOOSING SUBJECTS 2021
You need to consider the following:
❖ Choose subjects you like and are good at. You will achieve most if you build on your talents and strengths.
❖ Be careful you are not narrowing your range of future options too much.
❖ The difficulty of starting some subjects at Year 11 eg art, design technology.
❖ Your interests and perhaps future career paths. You will not need to make final decisions about jobs for
several years, but you must be thinking about your future.
❖ Closing doors by what you don't choose eg languages.
❖ If you are choosing a new subject that does not follow on directly from one you are studying now, do some
research by asking various students and the teacher what it's about and what it's like.

VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS 2021
It is important to consider the vocational pathways when choosing your option subjects. At the bottom of each
subject description you will see the relevant vocational pathways. This guide will help explain each pathway.
The vocational pathways are a new tool that provide a clear framework for vocational options, support better
programme design and careers advice, and improve the links between education and employment.
They are the product of partnership between government agencies, the industry training sector, secondary and
tertiary education representatives, and industry and employer representatives.
There are six pathways which represent new ways
to structure and achieve NCEA and provide a more
coherent framework for foundation vocational
education and training.
The pathways will help students to develop their
own individual education plan, so they are better
informed and able to make better choices to meet
their goals.
NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) is the minimum
qualification that you need to achieve to show that
you are ready to enter and progress to further study,
training or work.
Achieving NCEA level 2 with vocational pathways
means you have some interest, knowledge and
skills related to industry.
It shows you have:
Achieved the required number of credits to achieve NCEA Level 2
Achieved the required industry related credits that align with a particular industry
A broad understanding of industry
Interest and skills that relate to a particular industry.
Use the vocational pathways to plan your studies. There are lots of options. Whether you want to work in
construction or health, or unsure about the pathway that is right for you – the vocational pathways offer lots of
choice across industries to achieve your NCEA Qualification.

THE 6 VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS 2021
Manufacturing and Technology
From hands-on production and assembly to cutting edge research, from massive machines and busy production
lines, to individual crafts or computer design.
You might be working with huge lumps of metal or delicately assembling tiny component parts – so small you can’t
even see them. You’ll be working with tools, machinery and equipment, or maybe a computer.
You could be producing things in their millions, or making or designing individual one-offs. You might be fabricating
or maintaining systems, or doing a job involving lots of thinking and planning. Some roles are really creative; many
are methodical, detailed, and precise. Generally in this pathway, there’s a very clear end point to the job you’re
doing and you’ll know exactly what part you played in it. You’ll be able to say “I had a hand in that – I changed a
life, it couldn’t have happened without me.”
Types of jobs for this vocational pathway include:
Architect Engineer
Baker Jeweller
Boat builder Surveyor
Electrician Technician

You will be a part of a well-run team that’s committed to getting the job done safely and well, to meet the client’s
specifications.
You’ll work indoors and outdoors. Often it’ll be dusty, noisy and the hours may vary. You’ll move around from site
to site, working with lots of different tradespeople, contractors and clients. You’ll have a variety of different tasks,
and you’ll use a lot of different tools and types of machinery. The work is physical and active and you will learn by
doing.
Types of jobs for this vocational pathway include:
Builder Interior designer
Civil Engineer Project Manager
Earthworks Surveyor
Forklift operator Welder

THE 6 VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS 2021
Creative Industries
You will apply your creative skills and imagination to help people see the world differently. You’ll come up with new
ideas or variations on existing ones.
Sometimes you will need to analyse problems and come up with solutions, or develop fresh ways to express
existing concepts or ideas.
Working in the sector can often call for big picture thinking and attention to detail. Be ready to apply your talents
across different fields. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, and resilient and make sure there is always a market
or audience for your creations or skills. You may work independently or in a team to resolve technical, artistic and
challenging problems. You can be part of making a real contribution to your community.
Types of jobs for this vocational pathway include:
Actor Graphic designer
Artist Screen printer
Art director Stage/set designer
Creative director Technical manager

THE 6 VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS 2021
Primary Industries
There’s a huge range of jobs in this environmentally friendly sector, with a variety of experiences and opportunities
on offer. You could work in the outdoors, in some of the most stunning landscapes in the world, planting, growing
or tending animals, trees, crops. You may work alone, sometimes in isolated places, or with a bunch of like-minded
people. Your work changes with the seasons, sometimes it’s light, sometimes physically and mentally demanding.
There’s also plenty of sophisticated high-tech machines to work with and plenty of on-the-job training to help you
learn to use them.
If you’re not working directly on the land you may be visiting as an adviser to part of the industry – like arboriculture,
water or environmental management, the equine industry, or maybe an accountant, mechanic or vet. Further from
the farm, you could be in a processing plant, turning primary produce into value-added goods for sale and export.
Safety is a very strong focus in all parts of the sector because there’s always an element of danger.
Types of jobs for this vocational pathway include:
Animal care Heavy vehicle driver
Export and storage Marine farm worker

Services Industries
It’s a great sector for young people. If you enjoy working with people you’ll get a kick out of it. Good communication
and presentation skills are important. Working in teams and dealing with people means you’ll need to speak and
listen well to others and relate to people from all walks of life. You’ll also be able to pay attention to detail. If you
can work out how to handle tricky situations diplomatically, you’ll go a long way. Knowledge of New Zealand and
local culture and heritage is a real asset. And because employers and customers are keen on people who have
the X-factor, a willingness to learn and being passionate is also important.
Types of jobs for this vocational pathway include:
Bar tender /manager Hairdresser
Barista/chef/cook Receptionist
Event organiser Retail assistant
Gym manager Store manager

social work, medicine or therapy).
You may be working for the government or the private sector; you may be outdoors or in, or moving around from
place to place. Wherever you are, you’ll be dealing with people from all ages and walks of life, sometimes working
with them very closely indeed. There will be times where you’ll find yourself in fast-changing, challenging situations,
where you may have to make quick decisions under pressure. Wherever you work you’re likely to be part of a
