Marsha is currently based out of Birmingham, UK. She earned
an Hons BSc in Biodiversity and Conversation at the University
of Western Ontario. During this time, she did a year abroad
at the University of Leeds in the UK. She enjoyed her time there
so much so that she then went on to complete an MSc Environ-
ment, Development and Politics at the University of Birmingham
as well. Marsha made use of Across the Pond while apply-
ing for her masters and believes that the opportunity to study

Hilary is currently based out of St. Thomas, Ontario. She
earned her Honours BA in Archaeology and Medieval Stud-
ies at Wilfrid Laurier University and earned her Masters of
Medieval Archaeology at the University of Sheffield in South
Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Hilary enjoyed her studies in the
United Kingdom and wants to share that experience with other

A BRIEF HISTORY
OF COMMON LAW
When studying law in the UK you will not only be immersed in a world class
academic atmosphere, but also fully immersed in the staggering legal history
that you are surrounded by, allowing you to build upon your formal legal
education outside of the classroom. When you visit the Tower of London’s
Norman Chapel of St. John, you are standing in the place where King Henry I,
known as the Lion of Justice, issued the pre-curser to the Magna Carta in 1100
called the Coronation Charter.
This legal charter addressed accountability of royal powers, simony, pluralism,
and taxation abuse and can be found in the Lambeth Palace Library as well
as within the pages of the 12th century legal encyclopedia manuscript the
Textus Roffensis. The Textus Roffensis is part of the Rochester Cathedral Library
and includes the early seventh century Law of Æthelberht of Kent, which is the
oldest surviving English Law Code, the oldest Anglo-Saxon text, and perhaps
the oldest law code of any Germanic language. The famed Magna Carta
Libertatum or the Great Charter of Liberties was created by the Archbishop
of Canterbury and celebrated its 800th birthday in 2015. The four surviving
copies were brought together for the occasion in London and they remain today
a symbol of justice, the rights of individuals, and the right to a fair trial across
the Western world.
England’s capital, London, has long been a legal hub for the UK. In London
you will find the four historic Inns of Court: Lincoln’s Inn, Inner Temple, Middle
Temple, and Gray’s Inn, where barristers traditionally stayed and received their
legal education. Also, in London is the Old Bailey, the building known as the
Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, where many of England’s most
notorious criminals since the 17th century was sentenced. As it is still an active
court of law today, you can watch ongoing trials from the public galleries.
Nearby are both the Palace of Westminster which held the House of Lords, the
precursor to the current Supreme Court, and the Royal Courts of Justice which is
one of the largest courts in Europe.
The Royal Courts of Justice holds original documentation from the famous Guy
Fawkes trials from 1605 and still contains the High Court and Court of Appeal
for England.

in Canada and some that are only available when you choose to study in Britain.

3 YEAR LLB DEGREE
• The same length as a qualifying Canadian Degree, but you can enter
directly from high school.

2 YEAR “ACCELERATED” LLB DEGREE
A shorter degree than those offered by any Canadian law school

1 YEAR GRADUATE LLM (MASTERS OF LEGAL LAWS)
A specialised LLM that does not always require an LLB, unlike in Canada

OTHER STUDY OPTIONS:
COMBINE A 2 YEAR LLB AND 1 YEAR LLM
Pursue a 2 year Accelerated LLB and follow up with a 1 year LLM to maximize
employability. This combination will also cut the number of accreditation exams
you have to complete to the minimum 5. By pursuing this route you will obtain
a specialist Law degree in the same length of time it takes to complete a
general JD degree in Canada.
SUBJECT SPECIFIC LLBS
Our partner universities offer a variety of LLBs that focus in a vast range of
subjects, combining a qualifying law degree with modules in Business, Politics,
Philosophy, and languages. These LLBs are three or four years in length. Check

WHY AN LLM?
Are you interested in a career in law but not necessarily as a practicing
lawyer? Or are you already a practicing lawyer but would like to stand out
from the masses by specialising in a specific area of law? If the answer is yes,
the Master of Laws (LLM) may be for you!
The LLM is a post graduate degree which provides legal career aspirants with
valuable knowledge in law. In today’s changing market globalization has led
to the increased diversification of professional services which has affected
the legal services market, making the LLM a highly sought after degree.
Individuals aware of emerging consulting opportunities in the new economy
are taking the opportunity to add value to their career arsenal by obtaining a
LLM as their legal services career credential.
The program focuses in a specific area such as: commercial law, international
human rights, maritime law, intellectual property law, energy and oil law, and
several others.
LLM GRADUATES CAN:
• Pursue further studies such as a PhD in Law order to achieve an
academic career in research or university teaching.

The UK holds a personal and often ancestral
draw for many Canadians.
