Teach our future leaders about climate change
         this Earth Hour Schools Day
                              Friday 27 March 2020
Bushfires, floods, drought - the impacts of the climate emergency continue to be felt across our
country, and it’s time for things to change. This is why we have Earth Hour, and why 2020 is the
most significant Earth Hour ever.

Join hundreds of schools across Australia and #SwitchOff on Friday 27 March for the most
important Earth Hour Schools Day in the movement’s history. Earth Hour will be on Saturday 28
March at 8.30pm local time.

We want to make participating in Earth Hour Schools Day easy for you, so we have free,
curriculum-aligned lesson plans to teach your students about the importance of our
environment. If you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can also get students involved in
our Earth Hour Solar Light Challenge to learn about renewable energy while assembling solar
lights for school children living in remote, unpowered areas of Papua New Guinea.

Join thousands of schools around the country and sign up to #SwitchOff this Earth Hour.

How to get involved this Earth Hour:
   ● #SwitchOff for Earth Hour and register your participation. After registering, join
hundreds of schools to show support for strong climate action by sending us your logo
to display on the Earth Hour pledge wall.
   ● Consider taking part in the Earth Hour Solar Light Challenge or hosting an event!
   ● Get hyped with posters, social media kits and more - read on for inspiration, and access
     our visual resources here.
   ● Download our free Earth Hour Curriculum Toolkit, full of classroom-ready resources to
help you bring Earth Hour into the classroom!

                                                                                               0

Impacted By Their Environment. This course is accredited for PD (professional
development) hours in your state or territory, complementing the free suite of Earth
Hour primary and secondary unit lessons.
● We’ve also put together a separate pack of resources to help you navigate the topic of
  bushfires in the classroom.

Thank you so much for your support!

Classroom Resources
Together with Cool Australia, WWF-Australia has created a range of classroom-ready resources
to enhance student learning and engagement. These resources on climate change, biodiversity
and the environment are aligned with the Australian Curriculum:
          o Early Learning Unit
          o Primary Unit
          o Secondary Unit

Professional Development Course
Teach Climate Change basics with an animal focus - enrol in the new two-hour professional
development (PD) course: Investigate How Animals Are Impacted by Their Environment. This
course will help inspire your students to investigate how animals adapt to climate change. It’s
also accredited for PD hours in your state or territory, complementing the free suite of Earth
Hour primary and secondary unit lessons.

                                                                                                  3
Take The Earth Hour Solar Light Challenge
Engage your school in climate change action and harness the power of renewable energy to
change the lives of those in need. WWF-Australia is partnering with SolarBuddy to provide solar
lights to schools, children and families living in remote areas of Papua New Guinea.

In groups, you’ll assemble the lights in a hands-on and engaging activity that you can complete
in your own classrooms. We’ll provide you with how-to instructions, as well as video resources
and information kits. The lights you build will help children to study, remove the need for
harmful kerosene lamps and reduce C02 emissions.

Sign up for the Earth Hour Solar Light Challenge or for more information contact
jledger@wwf.org.au.

Host an Event
Earth Hour is a great opportunity for your school to engage students or your local community.
In the past, schools have:
    ● Taken students to nearby parks to explore native landscapes and wildlife;
    ● Enjoyed family days with a sustainability theme (one example from last year included a
Friday afternoon picnic, featuring a screening of Bee Movie).

You can register your event here. Otherwise, contact community@earthhour.org.au if you
need some inspiration or guidance when organising your event this year.
