THE FIELDTRIP HIGHLIGHTS
               Exploring a Juvenile Ocean
The Red Sea Rift System forms the divergent
plate boundary between the African and the
Arabian plates. It represents a natural laboratory
to study the continental break up and evolution
from a continental rift to ocean basin. The Red
Sea hills on the Egyptian margin display excellent
exposures of pre and syn-rift stratigraphy
and structural elements. The field trip offers
deep insights into the evolutionary stages of
the rift system and the associated potential of
               hydrocarbon exploration plays.

               FIELD TRIP FEE
Registration Fee for Field Trip – US $250.
Field Trip includes transportation, field guide,

RED SEA Field TRIP
23-24 MARCH 2022

                                                                                                                   Photography by Samir Khalil

                                                   OUTLINE OF FIELD TRIP
The field visits will focus on some key outcrops to define the main
structural elements and to examine the pre- and syn-rift stratigraphy
and depositional characteristics. Discussions will emphasize the
relevance of these elements to the exploration for hydrocarbons in the
                                                   offshore Red Sea.
The field trip will start and end at the workshop venue in Hurghada.
The visited outcrops are located in the Red Sea Hills around Quseir,
some 120 km southeast of Hurghada, with an overnight at Quseir.
The outstanding 3D exposures provide an unparalleled opportunity for
multi-scale observation ranging from close-up investigation to large
scale correlation of both structural and stratigraphic features.
Photography by Samir Khalil The outcrops will comprise the following onshore analogs for the
                                                   offshore structural and stratigraphic settings:
                                                   • Fault systems representing the structural framework.
                                                   • Relay ramps and their impact on syn-rift deposition.
                                                   • Precambrian basement.
                                                   • Pre-rift stratigraphic sequences and potential reservoirs.
                                                   • Potential source rocks (organic rich shale and phosphorite deposits).
                                                   • Rift initiation unconformity.
                                                   • Cenozoic marginal syn-rift facies.
Note: The actual outcrops shown during the field trip are subject to
