Message from the Chairman

I hope you all enjoyed a happy
Christmas and are settling in well
to the New Year. It was a pleasure
to meet and speak with many of you
at The League’s Christmas lunch at
the Vincent Rooms last month. The
restaurant is operated by
Westminster Kingsway College, and I
think the student chefs deserve a
resounding well done for the quality
and quantity (!) of their numerous
dishes. Our own student residents at
Student House enjoyed a very festive
Christmas party and Christmas Day
meal complete, of course, with The
Queen’s Speech, more of which on
pages 6 and 7.

The start of a new year brings the
annual publication of the events management group and will be a co-

The General Manager’s Comments

H appy New Year to everyone. I
hope it is a healthy and happy
         one.

I do hope you find the contents of this
issue of The League interesting with its
mixture of nostalgia, student profiles,
branch news and an updates on life at
Student House.

Looking forward, we are again joining
other Commonwealth organisations in a
joint event – this time a visit to The Bank
of England, followed by lunch at a nearby
restaurant. This is a great opportunity to
meet with members of similar
organisations and explore the bank and
its museum.

Membership Update

W ith deepest regret, we must
           announce the passing of Mr
           Robert Carrington, who had
been a Life Member of The Victoria
League. Since the autumn newsletter, we
were very happy to welcome Ms Victoria
Paton as our newest member.

You’ll notice the standard array of
activities found in this issue’s Diary of
Events, in addition to a few new
opportunities. One of which is an
expected rare tour of Speaker’s House,
nestled beneath Big Ben in the Palace of
Westminster. Also new this year will be a
tour of the State Rooms and garden at
Buckingham Palace, in addition to a tour
of the Imperial War Museum. Details for
these and all other events can be found at
the back of this issue.

In December, twenty-eight League
members, students, staff and guests
enjoyed a superb Christmas luncheon at
the Vincent Rooms at Westminster
Kingsway College. We hope you enjoy
having a look at some pictures from that
afternoon! As always, please do tell
family and friends about The League and
encourage those interested to join.

nurse at Middlesex Hospital, and she
often stayed over with her mother in
her quarters at The League.

It was on one of these visits that she
met my father Max Redden, an
airman from Australia, who was
convalescing after a ditching near
Malta in which he was the sole
survivor. They later married in
London, and my brother
was born in Wales very
shortly before the war
ended. They then moved
to Australia, where I was
born.

My grandmother, Dora,
eventually moved to
Australia to be near her
daughter, and she
became the Matron at

Social Media
The Victoria League is now on Instagram! Please search for ‘Victoria League Student House’ and
follow us at VL_Student_House
We have a Facebook page set up for members and the general public to like and follow. However,
we also have a separate group which only our members can join. If you have a Facebook account,
simply look for the group named ‘Victoria League Members’ and submit a request to join. As the
group has been set up as a private/closed group, members will need to be approved before seeing
content and conversations. This is to prevent the general public from seeing information available
only to our members.
Content in the group includes events, electronic copies of the newsletter and every so often we
may share photos or information which is only applicable to members of The League. Additionally,
there are news items and Commonwealth information we think might be of interest.
The Victoria League also has a LinkedIn organisation page if you wish to connect with us there.
